Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract This dissertation explores the idea of electronica as a descendent of electronic dance music, which, although embodying many related aesthetic qualities, operates within a different set of musical values. This needs to be understood in the context of how dance music's character, form and modes of performance relate to its specific cultural function. Repetitive beats (as espoused by house and techno in particular) comprise part of the cultural experience of rave. In combination with drug technologies and an ethos of collectivity, rave encapsulates a set of political phenomena that are entrenched within the formal and textural priorities of dance music. I discuss how modes of reception are affected by changes in these priorities, and to what extent post-dance music neglects the physicality that defines the political dimension of dance music's relationship to the body.

UDK 32(420):316.7»198/199» 299.572(420) TRANCE-GRESSION: TECHNOSHAMANISM, CONSERVATISM AND PAGAN POLITICS Abstract This article looks at the politics of successive Conservative governments in Britain in the 1980s and ‘90s through the lens of the increasing politicisation of Paganisms in that period. A wave of moral panics in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90s concerning marginal communities – such as Ravers, New Age travellers and anti-road protesters – and their ‘riotous assemblies’, culminated in the Conservative Government of John Major enact- ing The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act of 1994. This was seen by these commu- nities as legislation against alternative lifestyles and, in some respects, an infringement of spiritual freedom. Using the case study of technoshamanism – a Pagan meeting of ‘rave’ culture and neo-shamanism – I wish to examine how the political and Pagan religious landscapes of ‘80s and ‘90s Britain intersected and led to politically engaged forms of Pagan practice often centred around grassroots lifestyle and environmental politics. This will be explored with especial reference to the politicisation of The Spiral Tribe, a technoshamanic collective of the early ‘90s, and their increasing involvement in resisting the 1994 Act and promotion of campaigns such as Reclaim the Streets.     Cyberculture: The Beginning of the Modern World In the late 1980s and early 1990s something strange was happening. Early Virtual Reality and Internet were combining with house music, neo-psychedelia and cyberpunk fiction to produce a cultural movement that would herald the new hyper-connected world. Cyberculture: The Beginning of the Modern World is a exhibition of material from this era that explores this brave new world from the perspective of those who were there. The exhibition also marks the launch of the Nemeton Cyberculture Archive. The exhibition was curated by Sean Clark at Interact Digital Arts. it received funding from Arts Council England and support from the LCB Depot, Leicester. Many thanks to all of those who provided materials, expertise and encouragement. interactdigitalarts.uk/cyberculture Fractal Artworks Emerging from the mysterious mathematical world of 'chaos', fractals were Cyberculture's answer to tie-dye or the Paisley print of the 1960s. Were they art? Probably not, but they still looked amazing. The posters in the exhibition are originals by Gregory Sams, who opened the Strange Attractions fractal shop in London in 1990. The video clip is from The Fractal Experience, released on VHS by Prism Leisure in 1992. Re:evolution Terence McKenna’s ethno- botanic theories of human evolution made him the Timothy Leary of the 1990s. In 1992 The Shamen – at the height of their commercial success – recorded a Terence McKenna monolog and set it to electronic music. The resulting single Re:evolution reached number 18 in the UK charts. A poster of lyrics was included with the release.
