Archives, Numbers, Meaning: The Eighteenth-Century Playbill at Scale Mark Vareschi and Mattie Burkert In response to the growing prominence of quantifcation in the humanities, scholars of media and digital culture have highlighted the friction between the cultural and disciplinary roles of data and the epistemologies of humanistic inquiry. Johanna Drucker aptly characterizes the humanities as felds that emphasize “the situated, partial, and constitutive character of knowledge production,” while data are often taken to be representations of “observer-independent reality.”1 Lisa Gitelman and Virginia Jackson likewise critique the dominant assumption of data’s transparency: data, they insist, “are always already ‘cooked’ and never entirely ‘raw.’”2 The choices involved in data collection and preparation are not objective; they are shaped by the always subjective, often tacit, and sometimes shared presuppositions of the domain-specialist researcher. Practitioners of computational approaches to literature have shown that analyzing large corpora of texts “at a distance” may reveal phenomena not readily accessible through close reading of individual texts.3 Yet, the notion of distance fosters an illusion Mark Vareschi is an assistant professor in the Department of English at the University of Wisconsin– Madison. His work in eighteenth-century literature and culture is situated at the intersection of literary history, media studies, performance studies, and digital humanities. He has published articles in Eng- lish Literary History, Eighteenth-Century Life, and Authorship. He is currently completing a monograph on authorial anonymity and mediation in eighteenth-century Britain. Mattie Burkert is an assistant professor in the Department of English at Utah State University. She is currently at work on a monograph that examines the relationship between public finance and the London theatre during the decades following the 1688 Revolution Settlement. -

To the newly ascended James II she boasted, "Long with Prophetick Fire, Resolved and Bold,/ Your Glorious FATE and FORTUNE I foretold.^ When the Whigs drove James from power and installed William of Orange in his place, she represented herself standing mournfully, "like the Excluded Prophet" on the "Forsaken Barren Shore."3 In these and other instances, Behn clearly and consciously drew upon a long-standing tradition in English letters of associating poets with prophets. -

15. IDENTITY AND IRONY. MARTIAL'S TENTH BOOK, HORACE, AND THE TRADITION OF ROMAN SATIRE Elena Merli Although Martial strongly invokes the Latin epigrammatic tradition in his poetological statements-and thus in part actually constitutes this tradition-the intertextual references in his poetry point far beyond the genre of epigram. In his monograph on Martial, John Sullivan briefly discusses the role of satire and elegy in his view our poet's most important intertextual points of reference. According to Sullivan, Martial takes from satire his critical view of society and human behav ior, and from elegy especially the element of self-representation. Even prior to Sullivan, of course, the question of Martial's relationship to satire was posed frequently, and the answers focused on the humorous and mimic elements; on the poet's description of "types" such as the parvenu, the hypocrite and the legacy-hunter; and on his criticism of Roman society and the system of clientela. 1 To my mind, the limitation of this approach consists in the diffi culty of adequately defining the object "satire". Scholarship has too often abstained from seeking precise, concrete lines and tendencies of development in this genre, and done so in good conscience on the grounds of satire's intrinsic uarietas? As far as our topic is concerned, this fact has led to a kind of optical illusion: the relationship between Martial and Juvenal has moved to center stage, while Martial's much broader and more nuanced relationship to the various forms and stages of the satirical tradition has receded into the background. -

100 seventeenth-century news David L. Orvis and Ryan Singh Paul, eds. The Noble Flame of Katherine Philips: A Poetics of Culture, Politics, and Friendship. Pittsburgh: Duquesne University Press, 2015. ix + 454 pp. $60. Review by Anna Lewton-Brain, McGill University. In her short life (1632–1664), Katherine Philips (née Fowler) composed some 125 poems, translated two plays by Pierre Corneille, became England’s first female playwright to have her work performed on a public stage, adapted lyrics out of French and Italian songs, and exchanged letters with the intellectual and political elite of her day (her letters to Sir Charles Cotterell, e.g., were published in 1705). Despite her obviously significant contribution to seventeenth-century English literary culture, surprisingly, The Noble Flame of Katherine Philips: A Poetics of Culture, Politics, and Friendship is “the first scholarly collec- tion devoted to [her] poetry” (7). This collection of essays, edited by David L. Orvis and Ryan Singh Paul, seeks to remedy this oversight and “to demonstrate the ‘state of the art’ in [Philips] scholarship at the present moment” (7). In their extensive (40-page) introduction, which begins with a brief and informative biography of Philips’s life, Orvis and Paul provide a detailed literature review of the history of Philips scholar- ship. They remind us that, although Philips was “rediscovered” in the early twentieth century by George Saintsbury who “included her in the first volume of hisMinor Poets of the Caroline Period” (published in 1905), it was not until “the feminist, lesbian, gay and queer critics … in the 1980s and 1990s marshaled her works into debates at the intersections of gender, sexuality, politics, and religion” that Philips’s reputation as a major poet of the seventeenth century was restored (6). -
The Ode As a Genre in the Latin Poetry of Jan Kochanowski (Lyricorum Libellus)*

The development of this genre in this historico-lit- erary period in Poland has received only fragmentary reporting, e.g. in relation to Horatianism in literature or as a background for the vernacular ode. Yet, as Carol Maddison argues in her Apollo and the Nine, the Neo-Latin ode is, in a sense, a new genre revived and newly “devised” by Renaissance humanists. In her fundamental work, Maddison also presents the development of the ode and its variations in Italy and France. According to ancient patterns used by poets, Horatian odes (includ- ing Kochanowski’s odes) can be divided into the “Pindaric” and the “Anacreontic- Sapphic.” This division coincides to some extent with the classification of odes as “political” or “private.” Similar categorisation criteria adopted by various research- ers (Zofia Głombiowska, Jacqueline Glomski, Józef Budzyński) may result in indi- vidual odes being assigned to several different categories. The first part of this paper, therefore, emphasises the identity of the NeoLatin ode and its status as a new genre strongly related to Renaissance Humanism. In the second part, the author attempts to assign particular poems from Lyricorum libellus to patterns indicated by Mad- dison, and deals with previous attempts at classification based on differentiating be- tween political and private odes. -

Give then, O indulgent Fate! Give a Friend in that Retreat (Tho‘ withdrawn from all the rest) Still a Clue, to reach my Breast. Let a Friend be still convey‘d Thro‘ those Windings, and that Shade! Where, may I remain secure, Waste, in humble Joys and pure, A Life, that can no Envy yield; Want of Affluence my Shield.1 Anne Finch’s “The Petition for an Absolute Retreat” is one of a number of verses by early modern women which engage with the poetic traditions of friendship and the pastoral.2 Finch employed the imagery and language of the pastoral to shape a convivial but protected space of retreat. The key to achieving the sanctity of such a space is virtuous friendship, which Finch implies is both enabled by and enabling of pastoral retirement. Finch’s retreat is not an absolute retirement; she calls for “a Friend in that Retreat / (Tho’ withdrawn from all the rest)” to share in the “humble Joys and pure” of the pastoral. Friendship is “design’d [as] the Support of Human-kind”, a divine gift to ease the burden of human reason and passion.
