THE TENTH PASTOR OF ST. BARNABAS

As you know the tenth pastor of St. Barnabas the Apostle Church, Father Joseph Coschignano, died on Monday, January 11, 2021. Father Joe served the parish from 2010-2015 and was part of leading the St. Barnabas into its one hundred year anniversary. What an honor and privilege that was for him! I don’t think I will make it to the bicentennial year!

Father Joe loved being a priest and he was truly a happy priest. He had an old school charm about him. He was fond of using a typewriter rather than a computer. He had a wonderful passion for art. He even taught art at Maria Regina High School in Uniondale.

We thank Father Joe immensely for his love for and His Church. As a priest, you get to see the fruit of your ministry by leading others closer to God and seeing the change in them. The amount of good a priest can do for God’s children is immeasurable. God only knows the amount of souls that Father Joe has helped and won over for Jesus. In this year of St. Joseph may the patron saint of the Church watch over him and lead him to Jesus.

We thank all the pastors and priests who have served our beloved parish of St. Barnabas. I have to say I am truly blest to have with me two wonderful associate pastors, Father Michael and Father Shaju, who are so diligent in serving the parish and for Father Sean who goes above and beyond in his service to the parish as a priest in residence.

When I was a seminarian I received a call from a friend of mine Father Charles Kohli who informed that he was with Monsignor Anthony Savastano when he died. He told me “Now, Jeff you take his spot as a priest in the vineyard while he is now a priest in Heaven.” As Father Kohli asked me and now I ask the people of the parish to pray for a priestly vocation to take Father Joe’s spot in ’s vineyard. May God reward Father Joe for is love Jesus the Eternal High Priest and for His Holy Church.

To: All Clergy and Laity of the Diocese of Rockville Centre From: Lisa Honkanen, M.D., Director of the Office of Human Life, Family & Bioethics Re: Moral Questions Regarding the New COVID-19 Vaccines Date: December 15, 2020 ______

As the first doses of the new COVID-19 vaccines, authorized by the FDA for emergency use, have begun to be administered to people in our country, a number of questions have arisen regarding the morality of accepting the new vaccines based on the link to abortion in their development and production.

The United Sates Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has released a memorandum, entitled Moral Considerations Regarding the New COVID-19 Vaccines. This document was authored by Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades, Chairman, Committee on Doctrine, and Joseph F. Naumann, Chairman, Committee on Pro-Life Activities. A copy is attached to this memo, and the original may be found at www.usccb.org/moral- considerations-covid-vaccines.

In addition, the National Catholic Bioethics Center has released its own memorandum, entitled Points to Consider on the Use of COVID-19 Vaccines. A copy of this memo is also attached, and the original may be found at www.ncbcenter.org.

This memorandum is meant to give a very simple and general explanation of the morality of using the new COVID-19 vaccines regarding their remote connection to abortion. This memo does not address the personal decision of an individual as to whether to be vaccinated or not. For a more comprehensive Catholic moral analysis of the use of the new vaccines, we encourage you to read both memoranda from the USCCB and the NCBC, as well as going to the website of the Office of Human Life, Family and Bioethics of the Diocese of Rockville Centre for more information which will be updated periodically: www.respectlife.drvc.org.

Ideally, a vaccine will have no connection at any stage of development or production with the use of cell lines initially derived from an aborted fetus. Unfortunately, none of the three COVID-19 vaccines that will be ready for distribution to the public, either immediately or in the very near future, meets this criterion. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, using mRNA technology, do NOT use morally compromised cell lines in the design, development, or production of the vaccine. A confirmatory test, however, employing a cell line connected to abortion was performed on both these vaccines. Thus, while neither vaccine is completely free from any connection to abortion, in this case the connection to the initial evil of abortion is very remote and finite. In contrast, the AstraZeneca vaccine, using viral vector technology, is more morally compromised because it relies on a cell line produced from a past abortion in the design, development and production stages of that vaccine as well as in a confirmatory test. Therefore, its connection to abortion, albeit remote, is both greater and on-going.

Consequently, on moral grounds related to their connection to the evil of abortion, it is recommended that, of the alternatives available in the very near future, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are preferred to the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Both the USCCB memo and the NCBC memo concur that, for grave reasons, it can be morally permissible for Catholics to receive a vaccine remotely connected to the evil of abortion if there are no reasonable alternatives available and they make known their objection to the use of morally compromised cell lines. Indeed, vaccination under these circumstances may be viewed as an act of self-love and charity towards one’s neighbor in limiting a serious infectious disease. However, it should be noted that there is no moral obligation to vaccinate.

The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time First Reading 1 Sm 3:3b-10, 19 Samuel was sleeping in the temple of the LORD where the ark of God was. The LORD called to Samuel, who answered, “Here I am.” Samuel ran to Eli and said, “Here I am. You called me.” “I did not call you, “ Eli said. “Go back to sleep.” So he went back to sleep. Again the LORD called Samuel, who rose and went to Eli. “Here I am, “ he said. “You called me.” But Eli answered, “I did not call you, my son. Go back to sleep.” At that time Samuel was not familiar with the LORD, because the LORD had not revealed anything to him as yet. The LORD called Samuel again, for the third time. Getting up and going to Eli, he said, “Here I am. You called me.” Then Eli understood that the LORD was calling the youth. So he said to Samuel, “Go to sleep, and if you are called, reply, Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.” When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.” Samuel grew up, and the LORD was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect.

Second Reading 1 Cor 6:13c-15a, 17

Brothers and sisters: The body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body; God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of ? But whoever is joined to the Lord becomes one Spirit with him. Avoid immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the immoral person sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been purchased at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body. Jn 1:35-42

John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, “Behold, the Lamb of God.” The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” — which translated means Teacher —, “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” — which is translated Christ —. Then he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you will be called Cephas” — which is translated Peter.

America As a Religious Refuge in the 17th Century - Part 1

Refusing to compromise passionately held religious convictions, in 1620, 102 Pilgrims, followed by thousands of Puritans from 1630 - 1640s, fled European persecution for the British North American colonies. The New England colonies of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland were established as "plantations of religion." (1) Some settlers came for secular motives but the great majority left Europe to worship God in the way they believed to be correct. They enthusiastically supported the efforts of their leaders to create "a city on a hill" or a "holy experiment," whose success would prove that God's plan for his churches could be successfully realized in the American wilderness. (2) Even colonies like Virginia that were planned as commercial ventures, were led by self-proclaimed "militant Protestants."

The Puritans settled in Massachusetts with a goal to make the church more holy. By 1690 they were the largest religious group with 50,000 living in MA. Since they believed theirs was the only true religion, they expelled those who disagreed. Puritan minister, Roger Williams, disagreed with compelling others to agree with him and was forced to leave the colony in 1636. He went on to establish the colony of Rhode Island founded on the principle of religious freedom.

America is Still an Asylum for those Seeking Religious Freedom A U.S. core value is the right to be a member of any religion you choose and to worship openly. This is why America grants religious asylum to those who have been persecuted for their beliefs. The Commission on International Religious Freedom was formed in 1998 to study the impact and violations of religious freedom around the world. ------Happening Now: Religious Freedom Day, January 16 On Jan. 16, 1787, the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom was signed into state law and is one of the most important documents in early U.S. religious history. It was the model for the religious clauses of the First Amendment of the Constitution, ratified in 1791.
