Pilgrimage & Danube River Cruise With Bishop W. Shawn McKnight Bishop of the Jefferson City, MO Diocese B (breakfast) L (lunch) D (dinner) October 19th, 2021 (Tuesday): Depart Missouri for connection and overnight flight to Munich, Germany. October 20th, 2021 (Wednesday): Arrive at Munich Airport in the morning. Here, we collect our bags, pass through passport control, meet our escort and board the coach. We start our Pilgrimage with the Celebration of Daily Mass at St. Johann Nepomuk, better known as the Asam Church. A Baroque church in Munich, southern Germany, built from 1733 to 1746 by the brothers, sculptor Egid Quirin Asam, and painter Cosmas Damian Asam as their private church. After we venture out by enjoying a guided tour of Munich. First, we begin with a visit to the Marienplatz with the world famous “Glockenspiel”, and the twin-towered Frauenkirche, the most familiar landmark of old Munich. You will see the Town Hall, and the magnificent boulevard Feldherrenhalle Ludwigsstrasse Siegestor, created by King Ludwig I in the middle of the 19th century. See the Residenz, the palace of the Kings of Bavaria, and the Hofgarten. After our tour, we have lunch on our own and free time. We then make our was to the hotel for dinner and overnight. Munich (B, D) October 21st, 2021 (Thursday): This morning after breakfast at the hotel and check out & depart to Passau. En route we stop in Altotting & have a guided tour of one of Germany's most celebrated shrines and a city whose purpose is pilgrimage. For more than 1250 years Altotting has been the spiritual center of Bavaria and for more than 500 years the most significant place of pilgrimage in Germany in veneration of the Virgin Mary. Here, we celebrate Holy Mass in the Shrine of Our Lady of Altotting. While there, we have the opportunity to see the Basilica, St. Konrad's Monastery and more. After, we have lunch on our own, then continue to Passau to greet our Ship. We then check in, get situated and orientated and meet for dinner. 6 PM, the ship departs Passau for Regensburg. Overnight on the ship (B, D) October 22nd, 2021 (Friday): This morning we are served breakfast on the ship as it arrives in Regensburg, Germany. After, we board the coach for a visit to Regensburg Cathedral. We then see the St Peter’s Cathedral, one of the most prominent examples of Gothic architecture in Germany. Here, we have time to visit and reflect in this beautiful structure. Later, we Celebrate Mass at Alte Kapelle. Also known as The Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady or The Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady to the Ancient Chapel or Alten Kapelle. It is the oldest catholic place of worship in Bavaria and one of the most important churches in the city of Regensburg. We then reboard the coach and return to the ship for lunch. After, we depart for Weltenburg Brewery. Here, we enjoy short beer tour of the Weltenburg Brewery which was founded by a mission of Irish and Scottish monks in about 620 and it is held to be the oldest monastery in Bavaria. We then return for dinner on the ship. At 8:00 PM our ship departs Regensburg to Passau. Overnight on the ship (B, D) October 23rd, 2021 (Saturday): At breakfast our Ship arrives in Passau. Soon after, we board the coach and depart for Salzburg to enjoy a guided tour of Salzburg′s Old Town. Here we view the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mirabell Gardens and Salzburger Dom. After some time, we enjoy a break for lunch at one of the local restaurants on our own. You may want to try Augustinerkeller Brewery. Later, we depart Salzburg to visit Maria Plain Shrine. Upon arrival celebrate Mass at Maria Plain Basilica hosting the miraculous painting of the "Virgin with Child" by an unknown painter. It miraculously survived a fire in the Bavarian town of Regen undamaged. After our celebration, we board the coach and depart for Passau riding through the picturesque lake region Salzkammergut and arrive Linz to rejoin the ship for dinner and rest. Overnight on the ship (B, D) October 24th, 2021 (Sunday): During our breakfast on the ship our Ship arrives Emmersdorf. We then Board the coach for Melk Abbey. Upon our arrival we Celebrate Mass. After, we enjoy a guided tour of Melk Abbey, the Baroque style structure is surrounded by a gorgeous town with Renaissance homes and winding streets reminiscent of the Middle Ages. The Abbey is the setting for Umberto Eco′s ′The Name of the Rose′. Among the treasures housed here are paintings, sculptures, and decorative art from the 9th to 15th centuries. We then board the coach and drive to Weissenkirchen to meet our ship for lunch. This afternoon, we enjoy wine tasting in Weissenkirchen. At 4 PM, our Ship departs Weissenkirchen as we have time for rest and relaxation before our dinner on ship. Overnight on the ship (B, D) October 25th, 2021 (Monday): We wake this morning to find ourselves in Vienna. After a breakfast on the ship, we depart for Mass at Votivkirche. The Votivkirche is a neo-Gothic style church located on the Ringstrabe in Vienna, Austria. Following the attempted assassination of Emperor Franz Joseph in 1853, the Emperor's brother Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian inaugurated a campaign to create a church to thank God for saving the Emperor's life. After Mass visit to Schonbrunn Palace, the fabulous Baroque summer residence of the Hapsburg Emperors. Here, Marie-Antoinette lived as a young girl and the six year-old Mozart played for the future Queen inside the Palace. We then take a Panoramic tour of Vienna with a local English speaking guide. We enjoy our tour of Vienna Old Town between the University and Opera House passing major monuments to include Donners′ Fountain, Belvedere Palace Gardens, Hofburg Palace, Spanish Horses training place (external visits only), and St. Stephen′s Cathedral. After our tour, we can return for lunch on the ship or possibly stay in the city for lunch and enjoy free time for sightseeing, leisure or shopping. Later, we reconvene on the ship for dinner. Thereafter, we departe for a classical music concert to enjoy a Strauss and Mozart concert at the Kursalon. Kursalon is a music hall in Vienna, designed by Johann Garben in the style of the Italian Renaissance and built between 1865 and 1867. After, you can return to the ship after the concert or stay in the city center, before the ship sets sail. Overnight on the ship (B, D) October 26th, 2021 (Tuesday): Early morning our ship arrives Bratislava. After breakfast on the ship, we disembark and depart for a city tour. First, we Celebrate Mass at St. Martin’s Church. After Mass, we meet our local guide for visiting Bratislava. Walking down to the Old Town pass by St. Martin's Cathedral, Michael´s Gate, Academia Istropolitana historical building, Main Square, Primatial (Archbishop in the past) Palace, churches, palaces of famous families, Slovak National Theatre and Bratislava Castle on the hill with a panorama view on Bratislava. After, we return to the ship for lunch. Soon after we depart for a guided tour of Cerveny Kamen Castle, a 13th-century castle in southwestern Slovakia in the Little Carpathians near the village of Častá. This castle was completely rebuilt as a fortress in the first half of the 16th century. When the Pálffy family acquired the castle in 1588, the fortress was completed, and it became a representative noble castle. Although the castle was damaged several times by fire, it was always reconstructed by the Pálffys, who were the owners of the castle until the Second World War. Later, we return to the ship for dinner and rest. Overnight on the ship (B, D) October 27th, 2021 (Wednesday): After our Ship arrives in Esztergom, we board the coach and depart to Celebrate Mass at The Esztergom Basilica. Here, we have time for prayers, reflection, or time to tour the shrine. After our prayers and devotions, we have a panoramic tour of Esztergom, the medieval city lying picturesquely on the Danube Bend. Shortly, we reach Budapest and have a panoramic tour. After lunch on our own at the Market or return to the ship for lunch, we continue our exploration of this beautiful city with a morning tour of the Buda side of the city. Enjoy a guided tour of Budapest passing by Gellert Hill, Visit Mathias Church and the Fisherman’s Bastion. We admire St. Stephen’s Basilica and Hungary’s ornate Parliament building prominently situated on the opposite bank. We continue our tour viewing, Hosok Tere (Heroes Square) is ringed with statues of famous Hungarians. After, we arrive at the ship by coach for a farewell dinner & overnight. Overnight on the ship (B, D) October 28th, 2021 (Thursday): After our breakfast on the ship, we are ready for disembarkation & transfer to the Airport for our flight back home, arriving the same day.
