90th birthday John Douglas Webb Gramps was born and raised in Cedar City and resides here still. After high school he and his bride LaRene accepted work transfers to Texas and California before returning home. Though Gramps became adept at navigating the freeways of Texas and California, he is a Cedar boy through and through, having tramped the mountains and valleys in search of deer and firewood for parts of 10 decades. No legal tree is safe when Gramps goes wood hunting, and he celebrated his 90th by sawing down a hefty one. His children, J.D., Gary, Lori, Larry, Judy and Troy treasure his wisdom and humor, while little Mary Elizabeth awaits him as he patiently finishes his business in this life. Turning 90 on the 25th, a special birthday dinner will be held the following Saturday with most of his nearly 100 family members in attendance as well as more than 80 members he gladly inherited upon his marriage to Kaye Adam's later in life. Happy Birthday, Gramps!

It’s when we feel overwhelmed and unable to cope with it that the » Elaine Vickers, SUU STEM Center for Teaching and Learning Director trauma and drama begins and we frantically start looking for oxygen masks, or EXIT signs, hoping that running away or escaping will solve the problem. This is understandable. No one that I know likes to feel stressed. When in distress, it seems people will try anything to de-stress. Some choose good ways; others turn to quick, counterfeit, or not necessarily kosher comforts. However, once we put stress in a better perspective, shed some light on our shadows so to speak, we will be able to use it to help us live better lives. Transforming stress into a positive can even help prevent future failings by learning from past faux pas and becoming better people, not in spite of trials, but because of them. Perhaps it’s more our perception of stress that does the true damage. To help create a healthier perspective we need to get things out of our heads and hearts. Writing things down is a powerful way. Write down ten things that bring you stress and ten that bring you joy. This may seem simple, but sometimes the simple things are the best way to solve complicated problems.
