O'genesis Records and an Interview with Joseph Coward Feb 2012 Issue 1 Featuring: O’Genesis Records and an interview with Joseph Coward Hello readers, and welcome to the first edition of Woodnote. Woodnote is a magazine based on all the music I love! I hope to introduce you to new and interesting bands/ solo artists. I decided to dedicate Woodnote to The Lynch Foundation as I really do hold this charity close to my heart! The Lynch Foundation was established in 2005 and is founded by David Lynch. Its funds go to medical schools and universities to help their research on academic performances, learning disorders (e.g ADHD), cardiovascular disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, diabetes, anxiety and depression. It also funds Transcendental Meditation which is scientifically proven to reduce stress. This helps inner city students, veterans with PTSD and their families. It also helps the homeless who are trying to overcome addictions. I think this charity is truly amazing. It helps and supports many things, so the least I could do is dedicate Woodnote towards the foundation. I am aiming for Woodnote to consist of lots of things including interviews and reviews on bands, solo singers and inspirational people. I hope you enjoy it! Thanks for reading! Hello, It’s a special edition of Woodnote this time! A good friend of mine and a huge Charlafan, Julia Grantham, suggested that we should bring the Charlatan community together by allowing people to voice their memories of gigs and anecdotes they’ve shared with The Charlatans through Woodnote. So the challenge began and we asked some Charlafans if they could write 250 words on ‘What The Charlatans Mean to You’. The result was amazing. Then, the death of Jon Brookes hit the Charlatan fan base hard on the 13th August. There are no words to describe this sad time for all of Jon’s family, friends, band members and fans. The theme of ‘What The Charlatans Mean to You’ is kind of fitting now and more of a memoire. Jon was an asset to the world of music. Amazing on the drums. An inspiration to many who will be dearly missed, never forgotten and forever in our hearts. A life taken too young. Rest in Peace Jon Brookes, this issue is dedicated to you. The Charlatans forever. • What Happened to the Female Stars of Britpop?
Home News Sport Weather Shop Earth Travel Search Music Menu My Music What happened to the female stars of Britpop? By Fraser McAlpine Monday 13th November 2017 The indie bands that came to dominate Britpop emerged from a healthy alternative culture that was politically involved, progressive in outlook and inclusive of female input, from the alien techno of Björk to the literate blues of PJ Harvey. So it's a shame that now, 25 years after the formation of Elastica, that moment in popular culture is so often reduced to a boorish bunfight between blokes from the north (Oasis) and blokes from the south (Blur), or a testosterone-driven clash of classes. It was all of those things and several more complicated stories too, and nowhere near as male-dominated as it appears in the retelling. Here are seven bands whose contribution should not be overlooked. 1. Elastica [LISTEN] Justine Frischmann: Why I dropped music for art Elastica formed in mid-1992, when Justine Frischmann and Justin Welch decided they needed a group to reflect the interests of people like them. They made one album of sharp post-punk with lyrics confidently tackling erectile disfunction, scenesters and making out in cars, and it sold faster than any debut album since Definitely Maybe (a record it held for over 10 years). There followed a messy period, with band members leaving and arriving and a scrappy second album The Menace in 2000, after which the band split up. Guitarist Donna Matthews continues to make music under her own name, and works as a Christian missionary to the homeless.
