On September 24, I attended the All- Candidates Debate at Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School and stayed for its entirety. I noticed that the Conservative candidate, Costas Menegakis, was only answering questions planted by fellow Conservatives in the audience. Mr. Menegakis’ entire argument sounded nothing less than scripted. So, finally I had enough and decided I was going to ask a question to the Conservative candidate. It felt like an eternity had passed by the time I reached the microphone. But, when my turn came, I asked Mr. Menegakis how the Conservative Party can justify sending cheques to the wealthiest 1% while the middle class continues to suffer? Mr. Menegakis responded that he could not hear the question, which then had to be repeated five times. When he finally acknowledged that he understood the question, his only response was that my question was echoing a typical Liberal punchline. In other words, he was completely dismissive of my question, of me as a fellow citizen, and he completely humiliated me in front of the other candidates, the question panel and the audience. She’s a Classic! Joan Levert Aurora Tigers “Superfan”

here are fans, and then there are “super fans” – and Aurora’s Joan Levert is proud to fall into the latter camp. TWhen Aurora’s Junior-A Tigers are on home ice, neither a cold nor inclement weather will get in the way of Ms. Levert cheering her boys on to victory. “If you like hockey, it’s the best entertainment around,” says Ms. Levert, who makes it her mission to attend ev- ery home game at the Aurora Community Centre. “They just try so hard and just skate so fast, and most of them are such nice gentlemen too.” And, Ms. Levert is an authority on the subject. Both she and her husband spent years coaching boys and girls community hockey and baseball before retirement but even now there are few things more thrilling for Joan than when a Tiger wields his hockey stick and streaks down the ice like lightning with the puck. Although she might have packed away her own hockey stick, she wasn’t about to be outdone; nowadays her “stick” of choice, as founder of the Aurora Seniors’ Centre’s Sew Much Fun Sewing Circle, is a sewing needle and she wielded it with equal passion last year creating a Tigers-themed quilt – complete with a lightning block – to raise money for the local team. Last year’s quilt raised hundreds of dollars, and Joan is looking to repeat her success this fall, raffling off a sec- ond Tigers-inspired quilt, which she is busily completing over the coming weeks. Proceeds will benefit the players because, after all, hockey can be an expensive passion, she says. “Staying home is just out of the question for me,” says Ms. Levert. “I enjoy the experience of creating something, and the friendship you incur.” Joan, you’re a classic!

It would become a passion of McClenny’s for over a quarter of a century – despite going in blind with no broadcasting experience. “It was hit and miss, a lot of hit and miss,” said McClenny. At the time, Aurora Cable was just hitting its stride. The humble beginning of Sports Beat was in a family home on Yonge Street, repurposed to have administrative offices on the main floor and the production room in an old bedroom upstairs.
