Tzvi é um homem imbuído de valores, fiel ao caminho, a seu povo e a seu país. Veio do Movimento Juvenil Sionista "Ha­ bonim - Dror", que comemora agora 60 anos de atividade. Emigrou para Israel e concretizou seus ideais no Kibutz Bror-Chail, na região norte do Negev. Eu me encontrei com Tzvi em encruzilhadas impor­ tantes e me impressionou sua personalidade, principalmente no exercício de seu cargo como Prefeito Regional de Shaar Hanegev, onde atuou durante 13 anos. Nessa época concre­ tizou a fundação do Colégio Universitário Sapir, que é hoje um dos mais importantes do país e de nível acadêmico. Baseado nesse conhecimento, quando fui nomeado Ministro das Relações Exteriores de Israel, resolvi apro­ veitar sua capacidade e o nomeei para o cargo de Cônsul Geral de Israel para São Paulo e o Sul do Brasil. Tzvi de­ sempenhou seu cargo com muito sucesso, durante 4 anos e recebeu elogios tanto do Ministério das Relações Exte­ riores de Israel quanto de setores do governo brasileiro e da comunidade judaica brasileira com os quais teve contato assíduo durante sua missão. Com seu retorno do Brasil, Tzvi continuou sua atu­ ação pública e exerceu durante 10 anos o cargo de Presi­ dente da Câmara de Comércio e Indústria Israel - Brasil, empenhando-se com dedicação neste cargo, fortalecendo as relações do Estado de Israel com países da América do Sul. Agora, quando Tzvi Chazan resolveu escrever sobre episódios e atividades de sua vida, fico contente pela opor­ tunidade que me foi dada em prefaciar seu livro uCmninhos e Saudades". A compilação do material e a iniciativa da publicação deste livro são fatores importantes, pois o livro oferece um quadro completo de atividade sionista, valores humanos e sQciais, idéias e princípios cuja concretização são de grande importância para o público em geral, para sua família e para futuras gerações. Antes mesmo de mudar-se para Israel, Tzvi Chazan mostrou seus pendores literários ao publicar o livro Ulna criança está chorando, tendo sido elo­ giado, não gratuitamente, por Dinah Silveira de Queirós, a importante autora de A Muralha e Floradas na Serra. Vivendo como pioneiro no kibutz Bror-Chail, Tzvi Chazan revelou-se primeiro como político, e depois, como administrador. Deixou sua inclinação literária fechada em algum armário, para benefício do movimento kibutziano e, logo adiante, das relações Israel-Brasil. Agora, com as chuteiras penduradas, ele volta à sua vocação inicial. Claro, este livro está cheio de altos e baixos porque ele mistura sua veia de escritor com a de memorialista. Mas é isso, justamente, que torna seu livro interessante. SEGUNDO TEMPO: O político - Conheci o Chazan (é assim que eu o chamo) no início dos anos 70. Alguém me telefonou, pedindo pra dar uma ajuda a um companheiro de Bror-Chail. Ele precisava se avistar com a direção de O Estado de S.Paulo e deixar registrada essa visita. Marcamos um encontro, foi amor à primeira vista. Sugeri a confec­ ção de uma placa do Shaar Haneguev em homenagem aos Mesquita. Sugeri, também, que Chazan deveria se apre­ sentar como Ugovernador" do Shaar Haneguev. Marcamos a visita ao Estadão, ele se encontrou com Julio Mesquita Neto e com Ruy Mesquita. Foi um ótimo encontro do qual saíram boas notícias no dia seguinte nos dois jornalões. Muito bem, lnais a(liantc~ Chazan me liga de Israel, dizendo que seria importante criar um esquema de cidade­ irmã entre o Shaar Haneguev e alguma cidade brasileira. Pensei de imediato em Campinas, onde Quércia tinha sido prefeito. Nessa altura, ele já era vice-governador e recebeu bem a minha proposta. Só que em vez de Campinas, ele propunha Sorocaba. UEstá de bom tamanho", garanti ao político. Novamente pra encurtar o assunto, que aliás está narrado neste agradável livro do Chazan, o protocolo de cidades-irmãs foi escrito e assinado durante a primeira vi­ sita de Quércia, então Vice-Governador de São Paulo, a Israel, em 1983. Assinaram o prefeito de Sorocaba, Flávio Chaves, que veio na mesma delegação, e Chazan, do Sha­ ar Hanegev. A ratificação do protocolo ocorreu durante a visita de Chazan, no ano seguinte, à Sorocaba. A amizade entre Quércia e Chazan surgiu e se conso­ lidou nessa época, permanecendo finne até os dias de hoje. Bem, todas essas histórias, com mais ou menos de­ talhes, vão contadas no livro. Além de nos trazer de volta o escritor Tzvi Chazan, será de consulta obrigatória, no futuro, quando se pretender entender o que foram aqueles anos, na ponte Israel-Brasil. Porque Tzvi Chazan e sua in­ cansável companheira, Edith, fizeram mais pelas relações entre os dois países do que qualquer outro diplomata. Porque Chazan, descobri finalmente, nasceu diplo­ mata. All six mortars landed in open territory, and no wounded or damage were reported. According to Palestinian sources, seven unarmed Palestinians were wounded in the strike. Elsewhere, an IDF officer was lightly wounded by gunfire during an arrest operation in the Balata refugee camp near Nablus. He was evacuated to a hospital for treatment. A total of 10 Palestinian terror suspects were arrested throughout the West Bank overnight Sunday. The strike came after a long-range Grad-type Katyusha rocket landed near Netivot in the Negev Sunday morning, about 11 kilometers from the Gaza Strip. It was the first time a rocket landed near the city since Palestinians started firing from Gaza in 2001. "Israel is concerned and worried over the fact that the range of the missiles being fired on the western Negev settlements has increased and views these developments severely," OC Military Intelligence Maj.-Gen. Amos Yadlin said at Sunday's weekly cabinet meeting. The Popular Resistance Committees claimed responsibility for the attack. The IDF remained tight-lipped Sunday night about whether it would respond to the incident. While the rocket landed in an open field and caused little damage, it is very unusual to see the longer-range Grad deployed in the South.

What are the factors influencing the representation of women in Israeli politics? How Women in Israeli Politics has their representation changed over the years, and would the imposition of quotas be a good idea? A Comparative Perspective This policy paper examines the representation of women in Israeli politics from a comparative perspective. Its guiding premise is that women’s representation in politics, and particularly in legislative bodies, is of great importance in that it is tightly bound to liberal and democratic principles. According to some researchers, it is also important because female legislators Policy Paper 10E advance “female” issues more than male legislators do. While there has been a noticeable improvement in the representation of women in Israeli politics over the years, the situation in Israel is still fairly poor in this regard. In April myself and three colleagues, Ted Howell, Harry Thompson and Richard McAuley spent four days in Israel, the Gaza strip and the West Bank. We met a huge number of NGOs, Israeli and Palestinian human rights organisations, women's groups, community organisations, bankers, the private sector, university heads, health staff, including trauma counsellors, and all of the main Palestinian political parties and a Kadima member of the Israeli Parliament and Palestinian refugees.

An Arab Muslim, he studied at Hebrew University and began his career as a reporter for a PLO-affiliated newspaper in Jerusalem. Abu Toameh currently works for several international media organizations, serving as the 'eyes and ears' of foreign journalists in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. His articles have appeared in numerous newspapers around the world, including The Wall Street Journal and The Sunday Times (UK). He has been a producer and consultant for NBC News since 1989 and has been writing on Palestinian affairs for The Jerusalem Post since 2002.
