Regan Wilson is pictured with “Buck” Shelford and Darrel Shelford Congratulations to Regan Wilson who has been selected in the Maori U18 Rugby team. Regan was part of the team who attended the NZ Maori camp in the July holidays. He has been selected to play in the NZ team against Wellington and Auckland U18 sides in the next holidays. Regan also met some inspirational ex All Blacks while attending the camp, Wayne “Buck” Shelford and Eric Rush. He also trained alongside Eric Rush and the NZ Men’s 7’s team, who have now left to compete at the Rio Olympics.

Eric Rush, along with Darrel Shelford (Wayne's brother who is also the Director of the NZ Academy of Sport), have offered to be Regan's mentors as he moves forward with his rugby career. This is a fantastic opportunity for Regan and we wish him all the best for his sporting future.

Congratulations also to Sam Hodges (pictured right), a Year 10 student who has been selected in the New Zealand U17 Boys Volleyball team. Sam attended a trial in Christchurch in the July holidays and was selected from this trial.

Sam will travel with this team to Surfers Paradise, Australia in the September holidays to compete. We are sure you have a bright future Sam!

From the Principal Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa

Congratulations go to two of our students for gaining national recognition in their respective codes for sporting excellence. Regan Wilson, Year 13 has been selected in the New Zealand Maori U18 Rugby team and Sam Hodges, Year 10 has been selected for the New Zealand U17 Boys’ Volleyball team. These accolades are not just gained through natural talent and ability, but also discipline, focus and desire. Well done to both of these students, an outstanding achievement.

This term we welcome back Mrs Kara Boys, HOD Art and Miss Kate Rodgers, English following their short absence from school. Many thanks to Mrs Cindy Adams and Miss Hannah Wilson who stepped in during their absence ensuring a seamless transition for students.

Ms Kit Fenton, TIC Food & Nutrition, has now taken maternity leave. We wish her all the best for the arrival of this new addition to her and her partner’s family. Mrs Angela Richardson is welcomed back to take Ms Fenton’s classes until the senior students leave in Term 4.

We also welcome students from France, Switzerland, Spain, Denmark and Italy who enrolled at the beginning of this term and will be attending our school and experiencing New Zealand culture during the course of their stay. I trust their stay with us is rewarding and beneficial and I know we will share many cultural experiences together.

Term 3 is the start of the business end of the year for many seniors as the internal exams approach and a focus is on preparing students for their external assessments and exams. This is also an important time for junior students. Year 9’s will be choosing their Year 10 options at the end of this term and Year 10 students will begin thinking about their NCEA subject choices. I remind all these junior students to seek as much advice as you can about the subjects you are choosing and do so for the right reasons.

A taster report will be issued to Year 9 students and their parents before making their final choices so you can see progress across those subjects during the year. Ka kite ano

Grant Dick Principal Sad Farewell to Sam Lavea It was with great sadness that the school community heard the devastating news of Sam Lavea’s passing as the result of a car crash.

Sam coached our senior boys volleyball team to many successes this year, travelling to Christchurch with them when they competed in the South Island Championships.

Sam will be remembered as an inspirational coach, an excellent role model and a fabulous young man with a great sense of humour.

The boys farewelled Sam at his funeral held on 15th July. Sam pictured with the team at Stadium Southland

SPORT REPORT DUKE OF EDINBURGH TRAMP

Nine students and two teachers spent four days walking the South Coast Track in . The tramp was planned as a practise tramp for the Silver Duke of Edinburgh level and we invited some of our International Exchange students too.

The track, as you would expect, is on the South Coast of Fiordland. We stayed our first night at Port Craig School Hut and our second night at Wairaurahiri Hut. The remaining two days were spent walking a reverse of our route in. Track conditions were relatively good with not too much mud and the Fiordland weather behaved itself on the whole, apart from some brief spells of rain. The first day seemed like a long haul as we got used to carrying packs and walking on the track. We covered around 80 Km in total, a respectable distance in four days. It wasn’t easy; on most days around 6.30pm, most of us were ready to turn in for the night!

The scenery was absolutely beautiful, from pristine native bush to sandy beaches. Highlights included Port Craig village and school hut, both remnants of the logging days of the 1920’s. Most of us also walked down the true right of the Wairaurahiri River to see its mouth at the sea. Percy Burn Viaduct always impresses. It is amazing to think that our pioneering ancestors achieved such engineering feats. It is reputedly the largest wooden trestle bridge still standing in the world. Hopefully it will still be standing for other people to marvel at following an agreement between DOC, Southland District Council and the Port Craig Viaduct Trust to restore it.

Our students quickly fitted into the pattern of life whilst tramping. They excelled at showing responsibility for themselves, and helped each other where necessary. Their skills and training at coping with the outdoors were thoroughly tested but they dealt with the conditions with a cheerful outlook. Friendships were strengthened and time was spent talking with those we have only had the opportunity to talk to briefly in the past. Our evenings spent in the huts were filled with conversation, sitting near the fire or playing Uno!

On the last morning we got up at 5.30am to walk out whilst wearing head torches. It was cold to start, but we soon warmed up. We walked carefully along the track as we saw the faint glow of sunrise showing us the outline of the trees in the east. By lunchtime, we could see all the way across Te Waewae Bay to where we had started that morning.

The good tramps are the ones you wish didn’t come to an end. This was one of those. It felt good to be part of a group of eleven people who had accepted each other and worked shoulder to shoulder for four days. The fact that I felt that I was no longer needed as much as I had been on the first day, simply meant that the students had

risen to the challenges and beyond!

Year 10 Netball Tournament team interview by Ford Hello all, during our two week holidays our Year 10 Netball team competed in a netball tournament against 32 other school teams. I had the privilege to interview one of the stars from the team, Karlee Cruickshank: Q: “What were your highlights of the tournament?” A: “Mostly everything! I mean I loved every moment, the girls were awesome, we had some great laughs together and some really good games. I enjoyed playing together and mainly the food! “ Q: “Who were your toughest opponents?” A: “They were all tough. A few of the games we really had to push each other physically and emotionally. Especially when calls didn't go our way. But we all pushed on and all finished off the tournament in one piece.” Q: “Were you pleased with getting 10th out of 32 teams?” A: “I personally was really proud that we achieved our team goal of getting into the top 16. Q: “What are the most important things you learn when you go away to a tournament?” A: “The thing I learnt on tournament is that, not to over think things like a bad call or missing goals. You just need to move on. Also that if it is a long tournament, it doesn't matter how physically fit you are, you need to be emotionally ready for it!”

Year 10 Helpers at Open Night This year a lot of Year 10’s were involved in Open Night, demonstrating our 10 option subjects. A few Year 10’s were demonstrating in the Foods room, helping Year 8’s ice and decorate their own original cupcakes, which was a hit! A huge thanks to all of the awesome Year 10’s who assisted this year, Thanks for all of the dedication and hard work, this encourages many new students to come to CSC, it is truly a privilege to be able to help with such an important event in the school! Gemma and Zoe

Sports Focus - Volleyball Wednesday Activities have restarted and volleyball has been the most popular with over 100 students picking this as their 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice. The Year 10 team has had some outstanding results in volleyball. Sam Hodges has been chosen for the New Zealand U17 Volleyball team and Millie-Mae Wallace has been chosen for the Southland U15 team to go away to Dunedin later on this year. Well done Sam and Millie-Mae! Julie

NCEA Options for 2017 We are starting to look at what subjects we’re going to select for Year 11. This needs a lot of consideration as the subjects chosen will affect our future. We select 3 subjects on top of our 3 core subjects (English, Science, and Maths). These subjects will be the ones we will aim to achieve NCEA Level 1 in. There will be information given to help us make this important decision. Abbey and Adrienne

CAREERS CORNER by Maree Buchanan & Raewyn Lowe

Year 12 Grades Really Do Matter Year 13 students are now applying for Scholarships and for Residential Colleges, and have realised now that their grades from Year 12 are the ones that matter, if they are to be selected. Year 12 are reminded that Universities are now making entry criteria more difficult, and that they should be aiming to achieve to their potential THIS YEAR. A Merit or Excellence Endorsement on their Level 2 NCEA will open doors for them.

Residential Colleges Students continuing with Tertiary Education in 2017 are applying for accommodation online this month.

They will hear in the first week of October whether or not the Halls have accepted them for next year and students will be asked to forward a deposit as acceptance of the offer.

Study Link Studylink no longer has a Parent Information session. Students and caregivers are encouraged to apply on line as early as possible. Chris Ridden at the Studylink office in Invercargill is available for appointments if you need to see her.

Visitors to CSC Otago University and Otago Polytech Liaison have met with Year 13 students individually to help them with their course planning for 2017. If students require more guidance, they can make an appointment with Careers staff. Other providers will be at CSC later this month. We have also had the liaison officer from Queenstown Resort College here to talk with our Travel and Tourism students about the programmes they offer.

SIT Applications If applying for SIT courses for 2017, students need to complete their CV and an application form. Careers staff are happy to help with both. Applications should be away by the end of this term.

Defence Force Leadership Course Four students attended a Leadership course run by the Defence Force in Invercargill on 3rd August. The students were put through their paces with an intense workout for the afternoon. These experiences should help students make good decisions about their future.

CareerFest All Year 11 and Year 12 students attended CareerFest in Invercargill on 4th August. Students had identified which exhibitors they wanted to meet and had prepared questions, to help them make the most of their limited time. This exposure to so many Providers helps the students to see how many pathways are open to them, and what they need to achieve while at school to make their chosen pathway a reality.

Girls Football On Monday this week the CSC Girls Football team competed in the Three Rivers Tournament at Menzies College. There were six schools competing and we placed 3rd overall. With about 70% of our players new to the team this year, this was an outstanding result. Katelyn Kinraid was nominated our Most Valuable Player overall and Jamie Hamilton was nominated for the same award during our last game against Northern Southland College.

Special thanks Mandi Smalley, our team manager, for the many hours she puts in to running the team and Jo Perkin for transporting team members.

Katelyn Kinraid and Ella Smalley - you have done an outstanding job of coaching the team. It is evident as we watch skills improve. Thanks Katelyn for the five awesome years you have put into the CSC Girls Football Team – you will be sorely missed and wish you all the best as you leave CSC this week. Ms Macfie Teacher in Charge Trapshooting 2016 The trapshooting team have been competing well this year, with many prizes to their names already.

The season started with a competition at Invercargill. The boys struggled with the weather but still came away with some medals. Robert Wilson got 2nd in senior skeet, and Jacob Hammond was 3rd in junior skeet and 2nd in junior points score.

The next competition was in Dunedin, with our boys once again coming home with medals. Jacob Hammond was 1st in junior single rise and 3rd in junior skeet. Hamish Plunkett was 2nd in senior skeet. Juvan Diack was 2nd in junior skeet and 2nd in junior points score.

Trapshooting was added to the Dunstan Exchange program this year which was exciting. The boys had a very convincing win to an experienced Dunstan team. Our team was made up of Hamish Plunkett, Robert Wilson, Philip Wilson, Jacob Hammond and Roy Schuurmans.

The latest competition shoot was at Nightcaps over the holidays where teams shoot for the Scott Shield and individuals shoot for medals as per normal. We unfortunately lost the shield this year to John McGlashan, however did win the ILT Postal Shoot 2016 15 points score match.

The five highest scores from our entry were taken, and the winning team was made up of Max McCallum, Juvan Diack, Jacob Hammond, Hamish Plunkett and Roy Schuurmans. Medals for the day went to Juvan Diack winning a 1st in two disciplines and 3rd in another.

The boys are continuing to practice and compete during their lead up to attending Nationals in Christchurch, in September.

Year 10 Netball In July the Year 10 Netball team travelled to Christchurch to compete in the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Development Tournament. Overall, the team had a massive improvement being placed 10th in the South Island out of 32 teams.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Margie Ruddenklau for being an amazing coach on tournament and also for being a great manager. A massive thank you to Suzanne Alexander for stepping up at very short notice and being our manager on tournament. Thank you also to Mrs Beggs for being our teacher in charge.

Our final thank you goes to Tracey McMaster for being our coach for the season. We couldn't have gone to tournament without the help of these wonderful ladies. We had a great time and the experience was something that we will never forget. We have learnt so much and loved the opportunity to represent our school. We are very proud of our achievements! Year 9 Netball During the school holidays the Year 9 Netball team headed off to Christchurch to compete in the annual South Island Secondary Schools Netball tournament.

We knew the first day would be the most important and thankfully, we achieved our goal of being in the top 16 by winning two of the three games in pool play.

We were taken out by our ultimate rivals, Southland Girls High School in our second game but we bet Roncalli and Marian by good margins. The team was excited to have played so well!

On the second day we were well beaten by St Margarets but we had a nail biting game against Timaru Girls High and ended up losing with a very close 21-23. This put us 9-16th on the table. On the third and final day of the tournament we had some very hard and tiring games. We lost our first game against Rangiora but managed to secure a win against a very hard and closely matched team to us, St Kevins. This put us in the playoffs for 13th and 14th against Rangi Ruru. We lost our final 39-17. We all had an amazing time and put everything into the games! We have learnt a lot and loved every minute!

We would like to thank our awesome coach Sarah Norman, our Manager Robyn Clark and also the Year 10 Netball team for supporting us on and off the court. Thanks to Mrs Beggs for organising everything! Without her we wouldn’t have been able to have this amazing experience!
