Central Southland College Newsletter Aug 2016

Central Southland College Top Athletes at CSC Regan Wilson is pictured with “Buck” Shelford and Darrel Shelford Congratulations to Regan Wilson who has been selected in the New Zealand Maori U18 Rugby team. Regan was part of the South Island team who attended the NZ Maori camp in the July holidays. He has been selected to play in the NZ team against Wellington and Auckland U18 sides in the next holidays. Regan also met some inspirational ex All Blacks while attending the camp, Wayne “Buck” Shelford and Eric Rush. He also trained alongside Eric Rush and the NZ Men’s 7’s team, who have now left to compete at the Rio Olympics. Eric Rush, along with Darrel Shelford (Wayne's brother who is also the Director of the NZ Academy of Sport), have offered to be Regan's mentors as he moves forward with his rugby career. This is a fantastic opportunity for Regan and we wish him all the best for his sporting future. Congratulations also to Sam Hodges (pictured right), a Year 10 student who has been selected in the New Zealand U17 Boys Volleyball team. Sam attended a trial in Christchurch in the July holidays and was selected from this trial. Sam will travel with this team to Surfers Paradise, Australia in the September holidays to compete. We are sure you have a bright future Sam! Newsletter Principal: Grant Dick August 2016 [email protected] or csc.school.nz Grange Street, PO Box 94, Winton Phone 03 236 7646 From the Principal Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa Congratulations go to two of our students for gaining national recognition in their respective codes for sporting excellence. Regan Wilson, Year 13 has been selected in the New Zealand Maori U18 Rugby team and Sam Hodges, Year 10 has been selected for the New Zealand U17 Boys’ Volleyball team. These accolades are not just gained through natural talent and ability, but also discipline, focus and desire. Well done to both of these students, an outstanding achievement. This term we welcome back Mrs Kara Boys, HOD Art and Miss Kate Rodgers, English following their short absence from school. Many thanks to Mrs Cindy Adams and Miss Hannah Wilson who stepped in during their absence ensuring a seamless transition for students. Ms Kit Fenton, TIC Food & Nutrition, has now taken maternity leave. We wish her all the best for the arrival of this new addition to her and her partner’s family. Mrs Angela Richardson is welcomed back to take Ms Fenton’s classes until the senior students leave in Term 4. We also welcome students from France, Switzerland, Spain, Denmark and Italy who enrolled at the beginning of this term and will be attending our school and experiencing New Zealand culture during the course of their stay. I trust their stay with us is rewarding and beneficial and I know we will share many cultural experiences together. Term 3 is the start of the business end of the year for many seniors as the internal exams approach and a focus is on preparing students for their external assessments and exams. This is also an important time for junior students. Year 9’s will be choosing their Year 10 options at the end of this term and Year 10 students will begin thinking about their NCEA subject choices. I remind all these junior students to seek as much advice as you can about the subjects you are choosing and do so for the right reasons. A taster report will be issued to Year 9 students and their parents before making their final choices so you can see progress across those subjects during the year. Ka kite ano Grant Dick Principal Sad Farewell to Sam Lavea It was with great sadness that the school community heard the devastating news of Sam Lavea’s passing as the result of a car crash. Sam coached our senior boys volleyball team to many successes this year, travelling to Christchurch with them when they competed in the South Island Championships. Sam will be remembered as an inspirational coach, an excellent role model and a fabulous young man with a great sense of humour. The boys farewelled Sam at his funeral held on 15th July. SPORT REPORT DUKE OF EDINBURGH TRAMP Nine students and two teachers spent four days walking the South Coast Track in Fiordland. The tramp was planned as a practise tramp for the Silver Duke of Edinburgh level and we invited some of our International Exchange students too. The track, as you would expect, is on the South Coast of Fiordland. We stayed our first night at Port Craig School Hut and our second night at Wairaurahiri Hut. The remaining two days were spent walking a reverse of our route in. Track conditions were relatively good with not too much mud and the Fiordland weather behaved itself on the whole, apart from some brief spells of rain. The first day seemed like a long haul as we got used to carrying packs and walking on the track. We covered around 80 Km in total, a respectable distance in four days. It wasn’t easy; on most days around 6.30pm, most of us were ready to turn in for the night! The scenery was absolutely beautiful, from pristine native bush to sandy beaches. Highlights included Port Craig village and school hut, both remnants of the logging days of the 1920’s. Most of us also walked down the true right of the Wairaurahiri River to see its mouth at the sea. Percy Burn Viaduct always impresses. It is amazing to think that our pioneering ancestors achieved such engineering feats. It is reputedly the largest wooden trestle bridge still standing in the world. Hopefully it will still be standing for other people to marvel at following an agreement between DOC, Southland District Council and the Port Craig Viaduct Trust to restore it. Our students quickly fitted into the pattern of life whilst tramping. They excelled at showing responsibility for themselves, and helped each other where necessary. Their skills and training at coping with the outdoors were thoroughly tested but they dealt with the conditions with a cheerful outlook. Friendships were strengthened and time was spent talking with those we have only had the opportunity to talk to briefly in the past. Our evenings spent in the huts were filled with conversation, sitting near the fire or playing Uno! On the last morning we got up at 5.30am to walk out whilst wearing head torches. It was cold to start, but we soon warmed up. We walked carefully along the track as we saw the faint glow of sunrise showing us the outline of the trees in the east. By lunchtime, we could see all the way across Te Waewae Bay to where we had started that morning. The good tramps are the ones you wish didn’t come to an end. This was one of those. It felt good to be part of a group of eleven people who had accepted each other and worked shoulder to shoulder for four days. The fact that I felt that I was no longer needed as much as I had been on the first day, simply meant that the students had risen to the challenges and beyond! Aran Jagoutz Teacher in Charge STUDENT NEWS NATIONAL TEEN AG FINALS Peter McLeish and Carl Lindsay represented the Southland/ Otago region in the National Teen Ag competition in Timaru in the first week of the school holidays.
