S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY S T C VIEW FROM A L N R N SA THE CHAIR INGLEY SATURDAY 21ST APRIL 2018 Welcome to the players, officials and supporters from East Leeds for this afternoons NCL Division 2 game. East Leeds were formed in 1979 from the Black Dog pub and later with increasing participation moved on to East Leeds Working Men’s Club. Junior teams were formed and In the last few years after much fund raaising they bought the club themselves. Much hard work went in to improve the facilities from numerous volunteers and they now have a clubhouse to be proud of. They have got off to a good start to the season winning three of their four games, the only reverse being last weekend at home to Dewsbury Moor. A warm welcome to all the crew filming today’s encounter being shown live on Freesport. It is a tremendous initiative from the NCL to get them on board and from the games I have watched it has been a tremendous showcase for the amateur game. Let us hope this brings new supporters to the amateur game, for less than the price of a pint it is an excellent afternoon out. What can I say about our start to the season from the open age teams? Early days yet but we have never been in the position of having three open age teams at the top of their respective leagues (never had three open age teams). Well done to all concerned, coaches, players and helpers. Let us hope we can continue. The play “Playing the Joker” last Sunday starring JJB was a very entertaining afternoon for the few who attended. It was a pleasure to see JJB dancing and miming to the song “There is nothing like a dame” in his sailor outfit, a man of many talents! That’s perhaps understandable. Ryan played during the 1940s and early 1950s, so his career was once or twice removed from the Super League era. But his name used to crop up regularly during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, when I was a player. The name of Martin Ryan was well-known even to people like me, who were well after his time, because he was the man credited with transforming, perhaps permanently, the role of the fullback. Ryan, who had previously been a centre and, occasionally, a stand-off, was perhaps imbued with more of an attacking mindset than most no 1s when he was switched to fullback by his one and only club, Wigan. Possibly as a consequence he did something that, it seems, other fullbacks hadn’t quite thought of. When catching the ball he – according to reports – ran it back. You’d think that was an obvious thing to do, especially in the era of unlimited tackles, but apparently not so. I know that fullbacks engaged in kicking duels back in the day. I’ve read avidly about such contests in the 1930 involving the likes of Jim Sullivan (Wigan), Jack Walkington (Hunslet) and Leeds’ Jim Brough and I’ve often wondered what they were like. Reports I’ve read suggested that the no 1s would kick to each other in something resembling a game of tennis, with opponents standing around them, until one or the other made a potentially very costly mistake. They must have been fascinating. I remember back in the late 1960s watching Dave Marshall, of Hunslet, and Bradford Northern’s former Welsh rugby union international Terry Price having a bash at it (I seem to remember Marshall soon giving up on that one as Price remains one of the best booters of a ball either code has ever seen). And I’ve a vague memory, hopefully correct, of Great Britain’s George Fairburn taking on the Aussie fullback, I can’t remember which one, in a Test match at Bradford. There must be something in the air at Odsal. Rugby League these days is very much about playing the percentages so it’s hard to imagine any coach being happy about his fullback simply – potentially, anyway – giving the ball away. Maybe that was Martin Ryan’s thinking. We’ve moved to the point where it’s comparatively rare for a fullback to be selected purely for his defensive abilities, at least at professional level. I happened to be a fullback, and a purely defensive one as I was less than capable with ball in hand, although not a bad tackler, even if I say so myself. That won’t really wash anymore, and it seems to have been Martin Ryan, whose approach and abilities helped earn him Great Britain and England caps and a cabinet-full of domestic medals, who set the trend.
