S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY S T C VIEW FROM A L N R N SA THE CHAIR INGLEY SATURDAY 21ST APRIL 2018 Welcome to the players, officials and supporters from East Leeds for this afternoons NCL Division 2 game. East Leeds were formed in 1979 from the Black Dog pub and later with increasing participation moved on to East Leeds Working Men’s Club. Junior teams were formed and In the last few years after much fund raaising they bought the club themselves. Much hard work went in to improve the facilities from numerous volunteers and they now have a clubhouse to be proud of. They have got off to a good start to the season winning three of their four games, the only reverse being last weekend at home to Dewsbury Moor. A warm welcome to all the crew filming today’s encounter being shown live on Freesport. It is a tremendous initiative from the NCL to get them on board and from the games I have watched it has been a tremendous showcase for the amateur game. Let us hope this brings new supporters to the amateur game, for less than the price of a pint it is an excellent afternoon out. What can I say about our start to the season from the open age teams? Early days yet but we have never been in the position of having three open age teams at the top of their respective leagues (never had three open age teams). Well done to all concerned, coaches, players and helpers. Let us hope we can continue. The play “Playing the Joker” last Sunday starring JJB was a very entertaining afternoon for the few who attended. It was a pleasure to see JJB dancing and miming to the song “There is nothing like a dame” in his sailor outfit, a man of many talents! IRRIGATION FUND – We are still raising funds for the irrigation system which will be getting installed in mid June. For a £50 donation you will have your name/message on your own plaque in the foyer (subject to a character limit). See Jon or Tom if you are interested. Have a look at the plaques already in place. CLUB LOTTO - Tickets are on the bar. Only £1 a go to win some cash. Enjoy the game. Registered in England Number 130435 Registered Office Address: Westgate Brewery, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, WF2 9SW S A VIEW FROM T C A L N R N SA THE SIDELINES INGLEY BY PHIL HODGSON The name `Martin Ryan’ may not be one with which many present-day Rugby League players, coaches and supporters will be familiar. That’s perhaps understandable. Ryan played during the 1940s and early 1950s, so his career was once or twice removed from the Super League era. But his name used to crop up regularly during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, when I was a player. The name of Martin Ryan was well-known even to people like me, who were well after his time, because he was the man credited with transforming, perhaps permanently, the role of the fullback. Ryan, who had previously been a centre and, occasionally, a stand-off, was perhaps imbued with more of an attacking mindset than most no 1s when he was switched to fullback by his one and only club, Wigan. Possibly as a consequence he did something that, it seems, other fullbacks hadn’t quite thought of. When catching the ball he – according to reports – ran it back. You’d think that was an obvious thing to do, especially in the era of unlimited tackles, but apparently not so. I know that fullbacks engaged in kicking duels back in the day. I’ve read avidly about such contests in the 1930 involving the likes of Jim Sullivan (Wigan), Jack Walkington (Hunslet) and Leeds’ Jim Brough and I’ve often wondered what they were like. Reports I’ve read suggested that the no 1s would kick to each other in something resembling a game of tennis, with opponents standing around them, until one or the other made a potentially very costly mistake. They must have been fascinating. I remember back in the late 1960s watching Dave Marshall, of Hunslet, and Bradford Northern’s former Welsh rugby union international Terry Price having a bash at it (I seem to remember Marshall soon giving up on that one as Price remains one of the best booters of a ball either code has ever seen). And I’ve a vague memory, hopefully correct, of Great Britain’s George Fairburn taking on the Aussie fullback, I can’t remember which one, in a Test match at Bradford. There must be something in the air at Odsal. Rugby League these days is very much about playing the percentages so it’s hard to imagine any coach being happy about his fullback simply – potentially, anyway – giving the ball away. Maybe that was Martin Ryan’s thinking. We’ve moved to the point where it’s comparatively rare for a fullback to be selected purely for his defensive abilities, at least at professional level. I happened to be a fullback, and a purely defensive one as I was less than capable with ball in hand, although not a bad tackler, even if I say so myself. That won’t really wash anymore, and it seems to have been Martin Ryan, whose approach and abilities helped earn him Great Britain and England caps and a cabinet-full of domestic medals, who set the trend. The season has really had a shocking start weather wise for some clubs, this is only Saddleworths second game of the season and no doubt they will be hoping to get off the mark after a defeat at Askam two weeks ago. We have been more fortunate with no postponements but after our flier in the first game away at Leigh East we have come a bit unstuck with defeats at home to Dewsbury Moor and away last week at Wigan St Judes.

The Welsh have won the last five encounters between the two sides, putting over a century of points on their Celtic rivals in each of their last two clashes. Straight after that game finishes, Wales must take to the court again to face England (3pm) knowing that not only have England won all of their matches against them, but have never lost against a match against a fellow British Isles nation. Wales come into the tournament in good form having won the Celtic Cup back in April, beating Scotland and Ireland and scoring a century of points in each game. England had two tough matches in France in June in a two matches series against their hosts, winning the first 31-25 before losing 50-46. A Welsh cap record could be broken on Saturday. Alan Caron, Wales Wheelchair heritage player #1, could become the country’s record test cap holder if he plays in both games. With 29 appearances before this weekend, he is set to overtake Ian Watson, Jordan James and Rhys Williams, all of whom have made 30 test appearances for the Wales men’s side.

#COYS SECOND TO NONE Saddleworth 22 Oldham St Annes 16 09.02.18 Standard Cup Semi Final As semi finals and derbies go, it doesn’t get much tougher going to Saddleworth Rangers on a cold, wet February afternoon. With Saints boasting a strong squad, Saddleworth opted to go with experience rather than youth in their line up and it was that quality that would be important in the result. The early exchanges were fierce, and Saddleworth certainly ramped up the pressure in the early stages pinning Saints in their own quarter. With ball in hand, Rangers thwarted the Saints attack with some strong defence, pushing them back time and time again. It was relentless, and it would take a great play to unlock the defence. As both sides were toughing it out through the middle, it took until the 23rd minute before the deadlock was broken, and it was the home side who scored in the right hand corner through Sam Hart. The conversion missed, Ranger lead 4 nil. This lead was short lived, as Saints started to get some better field position deep in the Saddleworth half. The visitors made this pay when Billy Barnes went from dummy half and bulldozed his way over the line to plant the ball over the line. Matt Whitehead added the extras, taking the Saints to a 6 points to 4 lead. 7 minutes later, Saints struck again as a chip over the top was collected by Dom Bryan who found Whitehead on his inside, and it was the stand off who romped under the posts to touch down an excellent worked move.
