2 Introduction Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College, Udupi, founded in the year 1949 by Dr. Tonse Madhava Ananth Pai was his dreamchild, visualised to bring education to the doors of the youth of Udupi and its neighbouring towns. Until then, there were only two colleges in the then Dakshina District and both were situated in Mangalore. Dr. Pai could inspire a band of enlightened citizens of Udupi to work towards founding the college in this town. The Project was termed then as the wildest of dreams. Dr. Pai faced many obstacles, and at one stage he had to even return the donations he had collected for the establishment of the college. But Dr. Pai, a man of grit that he was, did not forsake his dream of establishing the college. With sheer perseverence, he could mobilise public opinion in favour of the college and inspire and attract donors for this noble cause, irrespective of how much or how little they could contribute. Dr. Pai then had the task of bending the will of the much reluctant authorities of the Government and the University of Madras. With great effort, he secured the permission to found the college in the practically rural environs of Udupi. Dr. Pai’s perseverance in this regard was equal to the legendary perseverance of Bhagiratha who brought the heavenly waters of the Ganga down to the earth. Dr. Pai still had another hurdle in his path. The University and the concerned authorities, in accordance with the prejudices of the time refused to grant permission to admit lady students and the famous ‘Shantha versus University of Madras’ case was fought on the basis of equality of rights ensured by the Constitution of India. The matter, then in the court of Governor, Sri Prakash, was settled in favour of girls with the timely intervention of Smt. Indira Gandhi who was not yet a prominent political gure, but only Jawaharlal Nehru’s daughter. Things did not move very fast, public opinion was slow to change and it was an uphill task. However, once Dr. Pai sincerely set out on his mission he got tremendous and overwhelming support from all concerned. The Swamijis of the Ashtamatas of Udupi blessed the project. The public of Udupi willingly and freely offered shramadhan to raise the building on the site at Sagri where the college now stands. When the building was ready, in 1952, the college which was initially housed in an Elementary school was shifted to the present campus. A dedicated band of eminent citizens of Udupi stood by Dr. Pai and the dream of setting up a college became a reality. That was seven decades ago. Since then the college has witnessed phenomenal growth and expansion. It is a premier Institution sponsored by the Academy of General Education, Manipal and a pathbreaker to the citizens of many other towns who saw in Dr. Pai, a mentor and guide to help them in

3 similar ventures. The era of higher education in the district also ushered in an economic revolution. The college celebrated its Silver Jubilee, Golden Jubilee and the Diamond Jubilee with great splendour. We can recall with pride the milestones in the path of the development of the college, including the inauguration of Madhava Raksha, the magnicent new Administrative Block by Dr. Murali Manohar Joshi, (Ex-Hon’ble Minister for Human Resources Development) on the occasion of inaugurating the Birth Centenary Celebrations of our founder Dr. TMA Pai. The college is the rst educational institution founded by Dr. T.M.A. Pai under the Academy of General Education, Manipal which is celebrating its Platinum Jubilee this year. The college is a premier institution with its dynamic faculty known for their scholarship and academic excellence. It also has a dedicated band of non-teaching staff who look into the diverse administrative tasks of the college. The college has carved a niche for itself in these sixty nine years of its existence. The college began functioning with stalwarts and pioneers in the eld of education like Prof. H. Sunder Rao, Prof. K.S. Haridas Bhat, who rmly established a tradition of academic and cultural activities in the campus, which was ably carried on by Prof. K Ramdas, Prof. K.K. Easwaran, Prof. K. Rama Bhat, Dr. Alwyn D’Souza, Prof. K Shreesha Acharya, Prof. P.N. Narasimhamurthy, Prof. S. Daniel, Prof. Dr. Gopalan Puthuseri, Prof. Ganapathi Bhat, Prof. M.L. Samaga, Prof. Dr. Jayaprakash Mavinakuli, Dr. P. Venkatramana Gowda, Dr. N. Hala Naik, Mrs. Kusuma Kamath and Dr. Sandhya R. Nambiar. The college has a state of the art library (Granthaloka) which has a rare collection of books. A Library with more than one lakh volumes, innumerable journals and periodicals which could do credit even to a University, a roll of honour with names of rank holders entered every year. The Department of German Language is unceasingly at work throughout the year. The college has a centre for Gandhian studies which conducts research and organizes workshops and seminars on Gandhian thought. The college provides a forum for many cultural organizations like the Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Samshodhana Kendra, the Regional Resources Centre for Folk Performing Arts and Kendra to hold the mega events which provide a rare opportunity for the students and teachers of the college to extend the horizon of their knowledge. Cultural activities like the Vadiraja Kanakadasa Music Festival taking place every year, various activities organized by the students

4 have brought to MGM College the status of an eminent educational institution. The management caters to all the academic requirements of the students. The college offers a post graduation course in Computer Science to impart higher education to the aspiring students. Every year several students get placement in reputed companies which come to the campus for recruitment. Since 2001-2002 after the bifurcation the Pre-University College was ably led by Mrs. Padmavathi Badkillaya, Mr. S. R. Arun Kumar & Mrs. Anusuya Karkera. The College Trust has been the most enlightened one and spares no effort to take the college to its pinnacle. Sri T. Mohandas Pai, President of both the Governing Council and the College Trust has taken on the responsibility of spearheading the various activities of the college. He continues the heritage of Dr. Pai of liberally sanctioning worthwhile projects to the College, intended to improve the amenities for the students and the staff. 35 For I and II Semester - all combinations

Mangalore university has introduced CBCS from academic year 2019 - 20. The complete version of this may be obtained from the Mangalore University website. Only some of the important points are given in the following pages.

The Salient Features of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) (Semester Scheme): Each course in a programme shall carry certain number of credits, which normally represent the weightage of a course and are a function of teaching, learning and evaluation strategies such as number of contact hours, the course content, teaching methodology, learning expectations, etc.In the proposed programmes, in general, 2 hours of instructions per week in a semester is assigned one credit. In terms of evaluation, one credit is equivalent to 50 marks in a semester. On thebasis of these parameters, a three year degree programme will have a maximum of 100 or 104 credits. The other features of the CBCS (Semester Scheme) are - i. The 'Degree Course' is to be replaced by 'Degree Programme' and the term 'Subject/Paper' is to be replaced by 'Course'. ii. The Under Graduate degree programmes are structured on Credit Based Semester Scheme. iii. The relative importance of courses of study and activities are quantied in terms of Credits. Total credit of the programme is in the range of 100- 104. iv. Each programme of study will have “Core courses”, “Electives” (of Group II & Group III), “Foundation” courses and “Extra and Co- curricular Activities”. The Core courses will consist of compulsory/optional courses which are compulsorily studied by a student in all six semesters, whereas Elective and Foundation courses are opted in I to IV Semesters. Elective courses are : a. Supportive to the discipline of study. b. Providing an expanded scope. c. Enabling an exposure to some other discipline/domain. d. Nurturing students prociency/skill. The student shall opt any one of the elective courses (a to d) in each semester.

36 The Foundation course will consist of compulsory foundation and elective foundation. Two languages are compulsory foundation, whereas i) Constitution of India, ii) Human Rights, iii) Gender and Equity, iv) Environmental Studies are elective foundation courses which shall be studied in any of I-IV semester by opting one in each semester (I to IV). v. The declaration of result is based on the Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) earned towards the end of each semester and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) earned towards the end of the programme with corresponding alpha sign grade.
