Thursday 29th November 2018 AVS Murthy got this year Rajyotsava award for his renowned work in the field of education among 63 recipients. Karnataka Rajyotsava awards announced Bharath Joshi, DH News Service & Agencies, Bengaluru, Nov 28 2018, 23:07pm ist updated: Nov 28 2018, 23:14pm Chairman of National Human Rights Commission and former CJI H L Dattu, former Olympian Kenneth Powell, former Rajasthan governor Margaret Alva, National Public School (NPS) founder K P Gopalakrishna and Kannada actor Jai Jagadish are among the 63 winners of this year’s Rajyotsava awards. The list of the award winners was released on Wednesday. The winners will be felicitated during a programme at Ravindra Kalakshetra on Thursday evening. The Rajyotsava award, instituted in 1966, is Karnataka’s the second highest civilian honour after the Karnataka Ratna. Recipients of the award are chosen by a government-appointed committee. The Rajyotsava award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a 20 gram gold medal and a citation. he Rajyotsava awards were slated to be presented on November 1 to mark the celebration of Karnataka’s unification. Vol. 18 July-December 2011 No. 2 Taking a periodic review of the activities in the Institute helps in understanding the direction and pace of academic work as well as identifying the problem areas to be tackled in the course of development of the Institute. This exercise should not be taken as a routine drill but it should provide us a path for comparative understanding of our own accomplishments and shortfalls. I am happy that during the past six months, the activities in the Institute have sustained the earlier pace and pattern. An important task of faculty evaluation has been completed satisfactorily and provided good inputs for the faculty members and the Board of Governors. All the faculty colleagues cooperated and participated in the process of evaluation wholeheartedly and, I hope, they were able to pick up a few threads to move further towards excellence. I am quite pleased to record here the activities undertaken in the past six months with a sense of fulfillment, happiness as well as to kindle our thinking for future. Akkai Padmashali Social Activist Dr. Akkai Padmashali is a male to female Transwoman, social activist. Her journey is one of courage and determination. From begging on the streets and participating in sex work for two square meals a day, she is now an activist that has inspired many. Born a male in a middle-class family, she discontinued her studies after 10th grade due to gender discrimination. She took up sex work to make ends meet. In 2012, Padmashali was invited by the President of India to attend the swearing in ceremony of the Hon’ble Chief Justice Shri Altamas Kabir, Supreme Court of India, and was invited by His Excellency Governor of Kerala to attend the swearing in ceremony of the Hon’ble Chief Justice Smt Manjula Chellur of the Kerala High Court. In the same year, she became the first male to female transgender in Karnataka to complete her sex reassignment surgery counseling process and underwent a sex change surgery. In 2014, she co-founded Ondede, an organization of feminists, activists, thinkers, and academics who recognized the need to converge the interests of three movements in the country – children’s rights, women’s rights, and the rights of sexual minorities. The organization is called Ondede, which means “convergence” in Kannada, the regional language in Karnataka. By recognizing the existing movements as distinct but interrelated, Ondede endeavors to link these groups to various media platforms to foster productive community discourses, conduct research, and instigate action on dignity-voice-sexuality. At Ondede, Padmashali has conducted many workshops on sexuality and gender at colleges across Karnataka and few parts of the country and she has held seminars on sexual minorities for government workers and officials.
