For the first time the carabid fauna of the area of Cape Emine (the middle of the Bulgarian Black sea coast) was studied. Over the period 2010 – 2012 adult carabid beetles were collected. Investigations were performed at 13 sampling sites and pitfall traps were used. During the study a total of 12618 specimens were captured. They belonged to 134 species, classified into 46 genera, 18 tribes, and 3 subfamilies. Dyschirius rufipes Dejean, 1825 and Laemostenus janthinus (Duftschmid, 1812) were reported as new species for the carabid fauna of Bulgaria. Three species were new for the fauna of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Fifty-four species were defined as new for the area of Cape Emine. Two endemics were found: Pterostichus merkli Frivaldszky, 1879 (Bulgarian endemic) and Cychrus semigranosus balcanicus Hopffgarten, 1881 (Balkan endemic). Species of ground beetles were characterized and classified according to their zoogeographical belonging, degree of endemism and rarity, habitat and humidity preferences; the life forms they refer to were determined. Keywords: Carabidae, ground beetles, Bulgarian Black Sea coast, Cape Emine, zoogeography, habitats, life forms. Introduction The territory of the zoogeographical region of Bulgarian Black Sea coast (Gruev & Kuzmanov 1994) is one of the most interesting, but not sufficiently explored areas in relation to the carabid fauna. Of particular scientific interest is Cape Emine (the middle of the Bulgarian Black sea coast). Geo-strategic location of this part of the coast, specific environmental conditions, and the presence of various habitats has led to the creation of unique biocoenoses and original fauna. The climate specificity, coupled with a variety of plant formations have predetermined the forming of a wide range of carabid species and their communities Accepted: 2 January 2015 Университетско издателство “Паисий Хилендарски” Published: 7 January 2015 Plovdiv University Press “Paisii Hilendarski” 1 …68… ZooNotes 68: 1-18 (2015) (Teofilova et al. 2012c). The area of Cape Emine is too outstanding regarding its main priorities. Some clashes between developers and environmentalists have occurred there and are still continuing. Natural resources are the reason for investors’ appetites, associated with construction and drastic habitat and landscape changes, directly affecting the spatial distribution of the carabid communities (Pena et al. 2003, etc.). In addition, in the selected area comprehensive biological and ecological analyses are missing. The study aimed at clarifying the species composition and analyzing of the ecological and zoogeographical structure of the carabid fauna and subsequent assessment of the anthropogenic impact in the area. Material and Methods In connection with the participation in a project for biological monitoring studies in the area, a series of observations and samplings were carried out in 2010 – 2012. Ground beetles were collected with terrestrial pitfall traps (Barber 1931; Hertz 1927; Dahl 1896). The traps were made of plastic bottles, buried at the level of the substrate. As fixation fluid a 4% solution of formaldehyde was used. The investigations were performed at 13 different types of sampling sites (pine plantation, oak forests, steppe-like and riparian habitats, wheat fields and ecotones). Specimens were identified according to: Kryzhanovskij (unpublished data), Arndt et al. (2011), Lindroth (1974), Hůrka (1996), Reitter (2006), Trautner & Geigenmüller (1987). Systematics follows

This paper represents a faunistic and ecological study on the edaphic coleoptera from a mixed forest of the “Codrii Tigheciului” landscape reserve, accomplished during the vegetation period of 2004-2006. The coleopteran fauna from a forest of elm-tree (Ulmus caprinifolia) mixed with ash-tree (Fraxinus excelsior), sycamore (Acer campestre) and maple (Acer platanoides) was represented by 77 species from 37 genera and 7 families. The most well represented was the family Carabidae with 39 species from 16 genera, followed by family Staphylinidae with 15 species from 10 genera, then by the families Silphidae and Scarabaeidae with 9 species each from 4 and respectively 2 genera and the families Lucanidae and Tenebrionidae with 2 species from 2 genera each. The family Trogidae was represented by one species. Within the study the analysis of some analytical ecological indexes was realized, such as the abundance, the dominance, the stability and some synthetic indexes such as the index of ecological significance and the diversity index (the index of real diversity – H(S), the maximum diversity – H(S)max and the relative diversity (evenness). DIPLOMARBEIT Carabid assemblages of various forest communities of the National Park Thayatal (northern part), Lower Austria angestrebter akademischer Grad Magister der Naturwissenschaften (Mag. rer.nat.) Verfasser: Wolfgang Prunner Matrikel-Nummer: 0009403 Studienrichtung /Studienzweig Zoologie (lt. Studienblatt): Betreuer: Ao. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Waitzbauer Wien, im Juni 2009 Summary The study took place in the Nationalpark “Thayatal-Podyjí” (northern Lower Austria) on seven sites from April to October 2005 and additionally on two different sites from April to October 2006. The carabid assemblages of this different sampling sites, which vary in their geology and forest type, were examined by using pitfall traps. Carabids were suitable bioindicators for this study because they are easy to trap and their ecological preferences are well known. The carabid assemblages were characterised by composition of wing morphology types, body sizes and ecological valences and by three ecological parameters which were Shannon Index, Eveness, and Forest Affinity Index (FAI). In total 17 different species were identified and the species number varied from 1 to 10 among the sites. Aptinus bombarda was the most abundant species but could only be found at two sites followed by Abax parallelepipedus, Abax ovalis and Molops piceus. Abax paralellepipedus was the most wide spread species and appeared at six sites. In total more than 80 % of all registrated species were brachypterous, 30 % were stenoecious and 70 % were body size category IV and V which means that large species were in the majority. The Shannon Index was highest with 2.01 at the very well structured oaktree mixed forest MXG3, and the FAI Index showed its highest value at the oaktree hornbeam forest ES and at the beechwood forest MXG2 with 0.98 each.

Nature Conservation 35: 63–95. https://doi. org/10.3897/natureconservation.35.30911 Abstract The European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) is a vulnerable species (IUCN) living in open habi- tats of Central and South-eastern Europe. Translocations (introductions, reintroductions and reinforce- ments) are commonly used as part of the European ground squirrel (EGS) conservation. There are numer- ous publications for such activities carried out in Central Europe, but data from South-eastern Europe, where translocations have also been implemented, are still scarce. The present study summarises the methodologies used in the translocations in Bulgaria and analyses the factors impacting their success. Eight translocations of more than 1730 individuals were performed in the period 2010 to 2018.

All previously known Bulgarian slugs from the Arionidae, Milacidae, Limacidae and Agriolimacidae families have been discussed in this paper. It is based on many years of individual field research, examination of all accessible private and museum collections as well as on critical analysis of the published data. The taxa from families to species are sup plied with synonymy, descriptions of external morphology, anatomy, bionomics, distribution and all records from Bulgaria. It also includes the original key to all species. The illustrative material comprises 118 drawings, including 116 made by the author, and maps of localities on UTM grid. The occurrence of 37 slug species was ascertained, including 1 species (Tandonia pirinia- na) which is quite new for scientists. The occurrence of other 4 species known from publications could not bo established. Basing on the variety of slug fauna two zoogeographical limits were indicated. One separating the Stara Pianina Mountains from south-western massifs (Pirin, Rila, Rodopi, Vitosha. Mountains), the other running across the range of Stara Pianina in the^area of Shipka pass. INTRODUCTION Like other Balkan countries, Bulgaria is an area of Palearctic especially interesting in respect to malacofauna. So far little investigation has been carried out on molluscs of that country and very few papers on slugs (mostly contributions) were published. The papers by B a b o r (1898) and J u r in ić (1906) are the oldest ones.

During a four-year qualitative study of non-marine molluscs, 96 sites within the DWA and nearby nature reserves were sampled in cooperation with the “Alpine Land Snails Working Group” located at the Natural History Museum of Vienna. Altogether, 84 taxa were recorded (72 land snails, 12 water snails and mussels) including four endemics and seven species listed in the Austrian Red List of Molluscs. A reference collection (empty shells) of molluscs, which is stored at the DWA administration, was created. This project was the first systematic survey of mollusc fauna in the DWA. Further sampling might provide additional information in the future, particularly for Hydrobiidae in springs and caves, where detailed analyses (e.g. anatomical and genetic) are needed.
