HMS Warrior 1860 Points of interest On the jetty: • Warrior was the first iron-hulled warship. • She was built at Blackwall in London and was launched in 1860. • The figurehead shows a Greek warrior. • It was one of the last to be made – ships now have badges. • Warrior is 418 feet (127.4m) long and 58 feet (17.6m) wide. • Warrior’s displacement (weight) is 9,210 tons! On the upper deck: • Warrior has 3 masts – the foremast, mainmast and the mizzen. • Imagine climbing up to furl the sails - sailors worked in bare feet for better grip. • The ship sailed at night so ropes had to be recognised by touch – hence the phrases “know the ropes”. • There are two funnels – Warrior was powered by a steam engine as well as sails. • The funnels could be lowered (and the propeller raised) when the engine was not in use. • Warrior had a top speed of 17.5 knots (about 20 mph) using both sails and steam. At the very front of the ship. Look through the netting to the black metal grills. • These are the “heads” (toilets) for the men - imagine using them in a gale! Look at the brass strips on the deck by the gun. • These are “racers”. • They made it easier to move the gun so it could be fired from various different positions. On the main (gun) deck • Each set of tables and benches is called a “mess”. • Each “mess” was the living/eating/sleeping/recreation area for 18 men. • Imagine 18 hairy sailors in this space! • Sailors slept in hammocks. -

Historical research into maritime medical practices, however, rarely uses archaeological data to support its claims. The primary objective of this thesis is to incorporate data sets from the medical assemblages of two shipwreck sites and one museum along with historical data into a comparative analysis. Using the methods of material culture theory and pattern recognition, this thesis will explore changes in western maritime medical practices as compared to land-based practices over time. Spring, 2013 Post-Medieval Seafaring Anthropology 629 Instructor: Dr. Kevin Crisman The Office in Exile: 138 Read Building (Kyle Field Basement), ☎ 979-845-6696 Office hours: Tuesday and Thursday, 1-4 or by appointment This course examines archaeological and historical sources to chronicle and explore the development of shipbuilding, seafaring practices, world exploration, waterborne trade and economic systems, and naval warfare in Europe and around the world (except the Americas) from the fifteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. Archaeological studies of shipwrecks, ships’ equipment, and cargoes provide a focal point for investigating change and continuity in the maritime sphere over five centuries. This article covers the life of Walter Toy, who, after many other adventures, wound up in the 16th Company of the 20th Engineers at the age of 54 years. Information is from the website of The HMS Ganges Association, a group dedicated to maintaining contact with persons associated with the training ship by the name. (http://www.hmsgangesassoc.org/waltertoy.htm) The Life of a 19th Century Ganges Boy Walter Toy was born on the 1st January 1863 in Budock, only a few miles from the port of Falmouth in Cornwall. His father was a farm laborer, his mother a laundress and he was the fourth of seven children and the second son. After he left school, Walter would only have had about three choices of what to do with his life - to follow his father and work on the land, the hard grind of working in the tin mines, or going to sea. His elder brother by five years, Charles, had already entered the Royal Navy and was a Signalman 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. "Warrior". No doubt Walter worked with his father for a time, but with the example of his brother, and being of age to join the Navy as a Boy, he knew what he wanted to do. The local papers carried advertisements asking boys of 15 to 16 and a half years of age to volunteer for the Royal Navy and they should apply to the Commanding Officer of H.M.S. "Ganges", a boys training ship, then moored in St Just Pool at Mylor, a short distance from Falmouth. -

Twentieth Century Naval Dockyards Devonport and Portsmouth: Characterisation Report PART FOUR CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The final focus of this report is to develop the local, national and international contexts of the two dockyards to highlight specific areas of future research. Future discussion of Devonport and Portsmouth as distinct designed landscapes would coherently organise the many strands identified in this report. The Museum of London Archaeology Portsmouth Harbour Hinterland Project carried out for Heritage England (2015) is a promising step in this direction. It is emphasised that this study is just a start. By delivering the aim and objectives, it has indicated areas of further fruitful research. Project aim: to characterise the development of the active naval dockyards at Devonport and Portsmouth, and the facilities within the dockyard boundaries at their maximum extent during the twentieth century, through library, archival and field surveys, presented and analysed in a published report, with a database of documentary and building reports. This has been delivered through Parts 1-4 and Appendices 2-4. Project objectives 1 To provide an overview of the twentieth century development of English naval dockyards, related to historical precedent, national foreign policy and naval strategy. 2 To address the main chronological development phases to accommodate new types of vessels and technologies of the naval dockyards at Devonport and Portsmouth. 3 To identify the major twentieth century naval technological revolutions which affected British naval dockyards. 4 To relate the main chronological phases to topographic development of the yards and changing technological and strategic needs, and identify other significant factors. 5 To distinguish which buildings are typical of the twentieth century naval dockyards and/or of unique interest. -
