This article paints the portraits of punks and skinheads who each embody, in their own way, a certain sense of ‘chaos in France’. In doing so, it opens up a research avenue that not only fills a gap in existing studies but also suggests a new way of examining the signification of subcultural resistance to dominant normativities. The article draws on observation and interviews, as well as auto-ethnographic material and critical analysis of text, music and film archives. This produces a variety of perspectives, which bring out subcultural dynamics in an analysis that is as closely focused as possible on the lives of those who embodied these dynamics to the bitter end, in all the contradictions of rebellion. Very much in the vein of the kid- tested, parent-disapproved first album—buzzing guitars and distinctive snotty vo- cals. If you liked the first album, this one will totally win your heart. By the time the third DUNGS album is out you’ll realize that THE CONNIE DUNGS aren’t really the new SCREECHING WEASEL so much as they’re the new JAWBREAKER. Or both. Or neither. Just like the Go Bananas! is a cool and rockin’ addition to THE AUTOMAT- ICS’ catalog, Driving on Neptune will instantly be recognized as another first-rate dollop of classic tunes from one of the most important pop-punk bands of the cur- rent period. It’s catchier than hell, hooks-lovers with a sweet tooth (like me!) will be bopping around the living room. Sneering and snapping in other places, Brandon Dung has an extremely distinctive voice and dumps out punk rock attitude by the gallon. The sugar here and the vinegar there are obvious—what takes a little while to figure out is how damned smart a lyricist Brando is. Just wait, save this catalog for five or ten years, history will prove me right: THE CONNIE DUNGS are right at the top of the 1990s punk heap.
