Timothy Gross (May 2009) and the addendum to that report, prepared by Mary Robbins-Wade of HELIX Environmental Planning, Inc. (HELIX) in January 2015. This letter report was prepared in response to a request from City of San Diego (City) staff that an archaeologist and a Native American monitor assess the current condition of the cultural resources within the project site. The proposed project design has not changed since the 2009 submittal. Site conditions within the project footprint have not changed, and the proposed data recovery plan is still adequate to mitigate potential project impacts, as described below. BACKGROUND The Roselle Street project (project) is located within the significant archaeological and cultural resource site known as Ystagua (CA-SDI-4609). The property is located on Roselle Street in Sorrento Valley, in the City of San Diego, in western San Diego County. The parcel is on the alluvial flats along Carroll Canyon Creek in Soledad Canyon, at the end of Roselle Street, although some of the steep valley wall is included in the eastern portion of the property, as well. On July 23, 2009, the project property was designated by the City’s Historical Resources Board (HRB) as HRB Site #924, Village of Ystagua Area #1. -

Mesoamerican Ancient Civilizations The Olmec, Toltec, and Aztec Olmecs of Teotihuacán -“The People of the Land of Rubber…” -Large stone heads -Art found throughout Mesoamerica Olmec Civilization Origin and Impact n The Olmec civilization was thought to have originated around 1500 BCE. Within the next three centuries of their arrival, the people built their capital at Teotihuacán n This ancient civilization was believed by some historians to be the Mother-culture and base of Mesoamerica. “The city may well be the basic civilization out of which developed such high art centers as those of Maya, Zapotecs, Toltecs, and Totonacs.” – Stirling Cultural Practices n The Olmec people would bind wooden planks to the heads of infants to create longer and flatter skulls. n A game was played with a rubber ball where any part of the body could be used except for hands. Religion and Art n The Olmecs believed that celestial phenomena such as the phases of the moon affected daily life. n They worshipped jaguars, were-jaguars, and sometimes snakes. n Artistic figurines and toys were found, consisting of a jaguar with a tube joining its front and back feet, with clay disks forming an early model of the wheel. n Large carved heads were found that were made from the Olmecs. Olmec Advancements n The Olmecs were the first of the Mesoamerican societies, and the first to cultivate corn. n They built pyramid type structures n The Olmecs were the first of the Mesoamerican civilizations to create a form of the wheel, though it was only used for toys. -

INTRODUCTION This report was not intended to give all the available information on the subject, but just a simple description that may be valuable for improving the knowledge that the optical community may have on it. The author believes to have consulted most of the available scientific bibliography as it can be traced through cross-referencing from the most recent papers. Olmec mirrors are the most ancient archaeological mirrors from Mexico and constitute a very good example of ancient American mirrors. The oldest mirrors found in America are from the Incas, made about 800 years before the Olmecs, dated from findings in archaeological sites in Peru. How this technology would have been extended to the north, appearing within the Olmecs, later within the Teotihuacan civilization, a few centuries before the Spanish colonization, is an interesting matter. Mirrors are important also within the Aztec civilization, that appeared in the proximity of the Olmec and Teotihuacan domains at about the time of their extintion. The extension of the geographic area where these mirrors were employed seems to us not entirely well-known. -

OASISAMERICA, MESOAMERICA Y ARIDOAMERICA En el transcurso de los siglos, las prácticas culturales y las condiciones del medio ambiente propiciaron en algunas zonas el desarrollo de la agricultura como fuente principal de subsistencia y con ello, se definieron alrededor de 2500 a.C. dos grandes áreas o superáreas culturales: Aridoamérica y Mesoamérica. En el primer espacio la fuente principal de vida siguió siendo la caza y recolección, mientras que en Mesoamérica la vida se hizo sedentaria con base en la agricultura. Con el paso del tiempo, alrededor de 500 a.C., por la mejora de las técnicas de cultivo y de riego y el intercambio cultural parte de Aridoamérica (Suroeste de los E.U. y el Noroeste de México) fue ocupada por pueblos sedentarios. Esta región con cultura mixta se le conoce como Oasisamérica. Fue el antropólogo Paul Kirchhoff quien conceptualizó en 1943 estas tres grandes áreas geográficas-culturales: Aridoamérica, Oasisamérica y Mesoamérica. Queremos destacar que se trata de conceptos y que estas áreas no eran inmutables, sino en constante transformación de acuerdo con el desarrollo de las sociedades. Oasisamérica En algunas regiones semiáridas, haciendo uso de algunos ríos como el Gila y el Asunción en Arizona, los pobladores no quedaron en el nivel del nomadismo gracias a la adopción de nuevas técnicas e instrumentos de trabajo y el intercambio con las culturas mesoamericanas. Así, dentro de Aridoamérica se empezó a distinguir, alrededor de 500 a.C., un área cultural que se conoce como Oasisamérica. Se ubica en parte de los territorios actuales de Arizona, Nuevo México y California en los E.U. -

A CONSIDERATION OF TIME AND LABOR EXPENDITURE IN THE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS AT THE TEOTIHUACAN PYRAMID OF THE SUN AND THE POVERTY POINT 14)UND Stephen Aaberg and Jay Bonsignore INTRODUCT ION In considering the subject of prehistoric earthmoving and the construction of monuments associated with it, there are many variables for which some sort of control must be achieved before any feasible demographic features related to the labor involved in such construction can be derived. Many of the variables that must be considered can be given support only through certain fundamental assumptions based upon observations of related extant phenomena. Many of these observations are contained in the ethnographic record of aboriginal cultures of the world whose activities and subsistence patterns are more closely related to the prehistoric cultures of a particular area. In other instances, support can be gathered from observations of current manual labor related to earth moving since the prehistoric constructions were accomplished manually by a human labor force. The material herein will present alternative ways of arriving at the represented phenomena. What is inherently important in considering these data is the element of cultural organization involved in such activities. One need only look at sites such as the Valley of the Kings and the great pyramids of Egypt, Teotihuacan, La Venta and Chichen Itza in Mexico, the Cahokia mound group in Illinois, and other such sites to realize that considerable time, effort and organization were required. -

B.C. (calibrated calendrical years before the Christian era) and document the processes by which it was integrated into local foraging economies. Here we review archaeological, paleoecological, linguistic, and genetic data to evaluate the hypothesis that Proto-Uto-Aztecan (PUA) farmers migrating from a homeland in Mesoamerica intro- duced maize agriculture to the region. We conclude that this hypothesis is untenable and that the available data indicate instead a Great Basin homeland for the PUA, the breakup of this speech community into northern and southern divisions Ϸ6900 cal. -

Hoogesteger van Dijk1, Alejandro Casas1 and Ana Isabel Moreno-Calles2* Abstract Background: The semi-arid environments harbor nearly 40% of biodiversity, and half of indigenous cultures of Mexico. Thousands of communities settled in these areas depend on agriculture and using wild biodiversity for their subsistence. Water, soil, and biodiversity management strategies are therefore crucial for people’s life. The tajos, from Sierra Gorda, are important, poorly studied, biocultural systems established in narrow, arid alluvial valleys. The systems are constructed with stone-walls for capturing sediments, gradually creating fertile soils in terraces suitable for agriculture in places where it would not be possible. We analyzed biocultural, ecological, economic and technological relevance of the artificial oasis-like tajos, hypothesizing their high capacity for maintaining agricultural and wild biodiversity while providing resources to people. Methods: We conducted our research in three sections of the Mezquital-Xichú River, in three communities of Guanajuato, Mexico. Agroforestry management practices were documented through semi-structured and in-depth qualitative interviews. Vegetation composition of local forests and that maintained in tajos was sampled and compared. Results: Tajos harbor high agrobiodiversity, including native varieties of maize and beans, seven secondary crops, 47 native and 25 introduced perennial plant species. Perennial plants cover on average 26.8% of the total surface of plots. Tajos provide nearly 70% of the products required by households’ subsistence and are part of their cultural identity. -
