British Musicals of the 1930S: Volume One” Coming to Dvd (U) SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT – “BRITISH MUSICALS OF THE 1930S: VOLUME ONE” COMING TO DVD (U) Part of “The British Film” collection From playful romantic comedies to variety extravaganzas, the British musical films of the 1930s offered audiences a source of much-needed escapism throughout the decade haunted by the Great Depression and the growing menace of war. Now HARMONY HEAVEN, THE SONG YOU GAVE ME, MUSIC HATH CHARMS and OVER SHE GOES can be enjoyed by modern audiences on DVD. BRITISH MUSICALS OF THE 1930S: VOLUME ONE (U) will be released on 11 November, RRP £14.99, courtesy of Network Distributing. This must-have collection is a wealth of rare gems from the very earliest days of the British talkies, many of which have remained unseen since their original cinema release. Each film is presented uncut, in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited cinema aspect ratio. Often adapting much-loved hits of the music hall as well as serving as vehicles for the era’s composers, performers and band leaders, they showcased home-grown talent alongside some of Hollywood’s most bankable stars. Disc 1 HARMONY HEAVEN (1930) Director: Thomas Bentley Starring Polly Ward, Stuart Hall, Trilby Clark, Gus Sharland, Percy Standing and Aubrey Fitzgerald. A young songwriter gets onto the stage whilst an audition is in progress. His efforts meet with laughter and he retires crestfallen, but a little actress follows and consoles him; with renewed inspiration, he writes a song that is accepted. He is engaged for the show, fights the leading man, sings his own song, and scores a success. Then, a vampish titled lady attempts to draw him away from the actress. THE SONG YOU GAVE ME (1933) Director: Paul L. Stein Starring Bebe Daniels, Victor Varconi, Claude Hulbery, Lester Matthews, Iris Ashley and Walter Widdop. Set in Vienna, this charming musical comedy features trans-Atlantic star Bebe Daniels as Mitzi Hansen, an actress who falls in love with her handsome secretary but encounters a great deal of difficulty in persuading him to propose to her. Disc Two MUSIC HATH CHARMS (1935) Director: Thomas Bentley Starring Henry Hall, W.H. Berry, Carol Goodner, Billy Milton, Aubrey Mallalieu, Arthur Margetson, Antoinette Cellier and Lorna Hubbard. This cheerful maze of melody, song, comedy and drama is effectively and shrewdly designed to showcase the talents of Henry Hall and his Dance Band. OVER SHE GOES (1937) Director: Graham Cutts Starring Stanley Lupino, Laddie Cliff Claire Luce, Judy Kelly, John Wood, Sally Gray and Max Baer. Pamela purposely falls from her horse whilst out hunting – a ploy to encourage music hall star Lord Drewsden to propose to her. Her success is promptly followed by identical collapses from Kitty and Dolly, and a triple engagement is joyfully announced, when in comes Alice Mayhill with a compromising letter: Lord Drewsden had proposed to her when he was still plain old Harry, but she’d turned him down. La Salle M.A., The University of British Columbia, 2008 B.A., Simon Fraser University, 2006 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Anthropology) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) July 2014 © Marina La Salle, 2014 ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates the ideology of Pacific Spirit Regional Park, an urban forest adjacent to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Using the tools of archaeology and anthropology, I analyse the history, landscape, performance, and discourse of the park to understand Pacific Spirit as a culturally-constructed place that embodies an ideology of imperialism. Central in this dynamic is the carefully crafted illusion of Pacific Spirit as a site of “nature,” placed in opposition to “culture,” which naturalizes the values that created and are communicated through the park and thereby neutralizes their politics. They remain, however, very political. The park as nature erases the history and heritage of the Indigenous peoples of this region, transforming Pacific Spirit into a new terra nullius—a site to be discovered and explored, militaristic themes that consistently underlie park programs and propaganda. These cultural tropes connect to produce a nationalistic settler narrative wherein class ideals of nature and community are evoked in the celebration of Canada’s history of colonialism and capitalist expansion—paradoxically, the very processes that have caused the fragmentation of communities and ecosystems. The park as nature also feeds into the portrayal of this space as having been saved from development and, as such, an environmental triumph.

To the newer generation of the cinema public there is interest in comparing the old-time screen stones with the modem ones. “ ” To be technically correct, revival is not the right word, for the old favourites are re-made, but in the majority of cases the original film is not altered to any great extent so far as the story is concerned, though the introduction of spoken dialogue must necessarily be more expensive them that recorded by the printed sub-title of the silent picture. On the whole, the re-making of popular pictures is done so well that it is deserving of the highest praise, but there is one criticism I have to make. I think it is a great mistake to alter the original title. Take a person who saw the original film passing by a cinema which is showing a revival under a new title. There is nothing to indicate that this is a new version of an old favourite, and such a person might well walk on to another cinema, missing what would have been a real treat.

    SHAKESPEARE ON FILM AND TELEVISION IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by Zoran Sinobad January 2012 Introduction This is an annotated guide to moving image materials related to the life and works of William Shakespeare in the collections of the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. While the guide encompasses a wide variety of items spanning the history of film, TV and video, it does not attempt to list every reference to Shakespeare or every quote from his plays and sonnets which have over the years appeared in hundreds (if not thousands) of motion pictures and TV shows. For titles with only a marginal connection to the Bard or one of his works, the decision what to include and what to leave out was often difficult, even when based on their inclusion or omission from other reference works on the subject (see below). For example, listing every film about ill-fated lovers separated by feuding families or other outside forces, a narrative which can arguably always be traced back to Romeo and Juliet, would be a massive undertaking on its own and as such is outside of the present guide's scope and purpose. Consequently, if looking for a cinematic spin-off, derivative, plot borrowing or a simple citation, and not finding it in the guide, users are advised to contact the Moving Image Reference staff for additional information.
