Pre-Owned 1920-1950S Popular Sheet Music Pre-owned 1920-1950s popular Sheet Music. 1920 1921 1922 1923 1924 1925 1926 1927 1928 1929 Many of these songs have decorative front covers and some from the 1920s and „30s were especially stylish. If a front cover illustration is attributable to an artistor studio they will be named e.g. Heath Robinson, Huntrods, Fred Lowe or Barbelle. Some titles were published during the Second World War (1939 –45), sometimes in a smaller size when ink and paper were in short supply. These pieces of sheet music are secondhand, old and naturally enough, they may show signs of wear and tear. However, most of them are in excellent condition but in a few cases we consider that some damage such as edging tears, a shop stamp, pen marks or a signature are reasonable imperfections considering the age of these manuscripts. There are no detailed descriptions here as to the exact condition of the music listed below but please e-mail us for an honest appraisal of any particular piece or title. As a guide, generally titles are priced in the range £12 - £30 (US$30-$45) + post and packaging.     XIII. Revivals and Recreations; The Sociology of Jazz By the early 1970s, as we have seen, jazz was in a state of stylistic chaos. This was one reason why the first glimmers of “smooth jazz” came about as both an antidote to fusion and an answer to “outside jazz.” But classical music was also in a state of chaos. The majority of listen- ers had become sick of listening to the modern music that had come to dominate the field since the end of World War II and had only become more abrasive and less communicative to a lay audience. In addition, the influx of young television executives in that period had not only led to the cancellation of many well-loved programs who they felt only appealed to an older audience demographic, but also the chopping out of virtually all arts programming. Such long-running programs as The Voice of Firestone and The Bell Telephone Hour were already gone by then. Leonard Bernstein had been replaced at the New York Philharmonic by Michael Tilson Thomas, an excellent conductor but not a popular communicator, and thus CBS’s “Young People’s Con- certs” no longer had the same appeal. In addition, both forms of music, classical and jazz, were the victims of an oil shortage that grossly affected American pressings of vinyl LPs. What had once been a high quality market was now riddled with defective copies of discs which had blis- ters in the vinyl, scratchy-sounding surfaces and wore out quickly. Record buyers who were turned off by this switched to cassette tapes or, in some cases, the new eight-track tape format.

    University of Dubuque / Charles C. Myers Library INVENTORY OF AMERICAN SHEET MUSIC (1844 – 1949) May 17, 2004 Introduction The Charles C. Myers Library at the University of Dubuque has a collection of 573 pieces of American sheet music (of which 17 are incomplete) housed in Special Collections and stored in acid free folders and boxes. The collection is organized in three categories: African American Music, Military Songs, and Popular Songs. There is also a bound volume of sheet music and a set of The Etude Music Magazine (32 items from 1932-1945). The African American music, consisting of 28 pieces, includes a number of selections from black minstrel shows such as “Richards and Pringle’s Famous Georgia Minstrels Songster and Musical Album” and “Lovin’ Sam (The Sheik of Alabami)”. There are also pieces of Dixieland and plantation music including “The Cotton Field Dance” and “Massa’s in the Cold Ground”. There are a few pieces of Jazz music and one Negro lullaby. The group of Military Songs contains 148 pieces of music, particularly songs from World War I and World War II. Different branches of the military are represented with such pieces as “The Army Air Corps”, “Bell Bottom Trousers”, and “G. I. Jive”. A few of the delightful titles in the Military Songs group include, “Belgium Dry Your Tears”, “Don’t Forget the Salvation Army (My Doughnut Girl)”, “General Pershing Will Cross the Rhine (Just Like Washington Crossed the Delaware)”, and “Hello Central! Give Me No Man’s Land”. There are also well known titles including “I’ll Be Home For Christmas (If Only In my Dreams)”.

Originally the personal collection of the singer Rita Williams, with later additions, it includes songs in various European languages and some in Afrikaans. Rita Williams sang with the Billy Cotton Club, among other groups, and made numerous recordings in the 1940s and 1950s. The songs are arranged alphabetically by title.
