OPEN • Tuesday–Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. CLOSED • Sunday & Monday APRIL 2009 OYSTER BLISS XVIII enis Jamain makes dry, minerally Sauvignon Blanc at Reuilly in the Loire Valley, and one day he told Dme that nothing––including caviar, even including black tru‰es––“nothing tastes as good as a glass of Reuilly and a platter of top-quality raw oysters.” When I told him about our annual Oyster Bliss party, he said he wanted to fly over and pour his wine. By the way, his English is pretty good. I think he attended a Bay Area college, Stamford or something like that––the one that lost the Big Game. (Just teasing, Car- dinal fans––I didn’t even go to Cal––they wouldn’t let me in.) Come one, come all! Live it up at our annual gathering known as Oyster Bliss. Forget yer troubles, c’mon be happy, because as you know, the Decider is outta there. Iced oysters on the half shell and the wines that go with. And why not some hot little sausages on the side for a heavenly contrast? Here is our recipe: close parking lot, set up tents just in case, ring up gang at Monterey Fish and ask them to select and shuck the best available oysters, get our pal Christopher Lee of Ec- colo Restaurant busy preparing some of his delicious home- made sausages, order bread from Acme, and why not some live music to add to the ambience? Note the date: SATURDAY, APRIL 18 11 am to 4 pm The event is staged and presented by Café Fanny.

Wine is an integral part of France’s culture, history and status. Recognised throughout the world for its wine production, which represents 20% of production worldwide and boasting a wealth of great wines renowned world- wide, France has been able to follow a way of life “steeped in the philosophy and culture of wine”. And the French are rather proud of this expertise… Today, there has been a change in their wine drinking habits: French consumers now drink less frequently but the wine is of better quality. Hence the increasing importance placed on wine cabinets. Wine is a living pro- duct: it must be stored in ideal conditions to optimize its development process. What are ideal conditions? A natural cellar, below ground, with stone walls, a vaulted ceiling and beaten- earth floor. However, natural cellars are not accessible to everyone: Should you therefore give up on the idea of having a wine cellar? Fortunately no – since EuroCave created the first electric wine cabinet! 7 Vine shoot Stalk Peduncle It is the framework of the Making wine bunch of grapes which above all contains tannins IN COLLABORATION WITH JOHN EUVRARD MOF (Meilleur Ouvrier de France) SOMMELIER France’s top sommelier RAW MATERIALS The vine The grape How is wine made? • Domaine Vetriccie Rosé, 2017
Domaine Vetriccie Rosé, 2017 ABOUT THE WINE Corsica has a wine tradition extending back millennia— but only found its groove in the last half-century, as farmers began trading chestnut trees for grapevines. Among those leading the transition was the Barcelo family, who in 1966 bought a perfect lakeside property. They’re now a third-generation winemaking family, crafting bright, zesty wines in Corsica’s ideal climate. It took thousands of years for Corsica to make wines like this, but it was worth the wait. DID YOU KNOW? Corsica’s leading grape variety, Nielluccio, is genetically identical to Tuscany’s Sangiovese grape. Sciacarello, a grape native to Corsica, is similar to Pinot Noir. ABOUT THE REGION Corsica, a French island in the Mediterranean, got its first grapevines 2,500 years ago, thanks to the ancient Greeks. Its imposing peaks host ski resorts, within sight of sunny beaches. In between are the vineyards, which are protected from inclement weather by the mountains. Corsica’s winemaking leans heavily toward rosé; it comprises Corsica, France 70 percent of wine production. AT A GLANCE Variety: 50% Nielluccio, Oak: Stainless steel (no oak) 35% Sciacarello, 15% Grenache Alcohol: 12.5% Vintage: 2017 Farming: Conventional Vineyard: Domaine Vetriccie To learn more about this wine, visit blueapron.com/wines/220 TASTING NOTES Domaine Vetriccie Rosé is an island wine in every sense, born of bright sun and seaside breezes. It’s brighter, racier and more complex than typical Provence rosés, which are fuller, leaning more toward berry flavors. 1) Look at the Color Salmon 2) Swirl & Smell Strawberry Cantaloupe Orange zest Rose petal 3) Taste & Savor Low High Tannins Drying element TASTING TIP Sweetness Amount of sugar Note the wine’s minerally, saline character.

Revolutionising Cinsaut Yvonne le Riche Dissertation submitted to the Cape Wine Academy in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Diploma of Cape Wine Master March 2015 DECLARATION OF ORIGINAL WORK I, Yvonne le Riche, declare that this dissertation is my own, unaided work. It is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the diploma of Cape Wine Master to the Cape Wine Academy. It has not been submitted before for qualification of examination in this or any other educational organisation. Yvonne le Riche Date: ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my dear friend and Cape Wine Master mentor, Junel Vermeulen, for her encouragement, generous sharing of knowledge and true passion for great wine. To my husband Ewald Jooste, thank you for your endless patience with my academic pursuits. May we share many great wines together in future! Thank you to my family for infinite support and inspiration. Great appreciation goes to my fellow Cape Wine Master students and graduates who assisted and supported me during my studies. Lastly I would like to thank the viticulturists, winemakers and industry professionals who patiently and enthusiastically answered my questions and truly assisted in providing this assignment with substance. ABSTRACT Cinsaut has recently re-emerged within the South African wine industry as both a blending component and single grape varietal. This assignment summarises the historical use of Cinsaut within the South African context as well as the merits of this variety in the modern winemaking environment. Focus will fall on the characteristics of Cinsaut, for example what the variety adds to a blend, popular regions of growth as well as possible downsides.

  • Aglianico from Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia
Aglianico From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Aglianico (pronounced [aʎˈʎaːniko], roughly "ahl-YAH-nee- koe") is a black grape grown in the Basilicata and Campania Aglianico regions of Italy. The vine originated in Greece and was Grape (Vitis) brought to the south of Italy by Greek settlers. The name may be a corruption of vitis hellenica, Latin for "Greek vine."[1] Another etymology posits a corruption of Apulianicum, the Latin name for the whole of southern Italy in the time of ancient Rome. During this period, it was the principal grape of the famous Falernian wine, the Roman equivalent of a first-growth wine today. From Greece it was brought to Italy by settlers to Cumae near modern-day Pozzuoli, and from there spread to various points in the regions of Campania and Basilicata. While still grown in Italy, the original Greek plantings seem to have disappeared.[2] In ancient Rome, the grape was the principal component of the world's earliest first-growth wine, Falernian.[1] Ruins from the Greek Along with a white grape known as Greco (today grown as Greco di Tufo), the grape settlement of Cumae.
