Concepts such as triple bottom line (environment, social, financial) and SIB (Social Impact Bonds) have become commonplace. The sector is largely known as impact investing with a growing market potential. Its three key components are: supply of capital, demand for capital and intermediaries. Governments by default are chief intermediaries. Non-profit and for-profit businesses exist across a “blended returns” spectrum that are aligned well with traditional financing - when understood. This research project addresses the emerging social finance education challenges and opportunity gaps. It reviews the history (e.g. social economy) where social finance emerged from and observed traditional market shifts to hybrid models consideration. Power Reports: Canadian Retail Banking Customer Satisfaction Improves as Customers Increasingly Understand Fees and Services; However, Customers Still Perceive Banks as Profit Driven, Lagging in Innovation and Not Customer Focused TD Canada Trust and ING Direct Canada Each Rank Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Retail Banks in Canada in Their Respective Segments for a Second Consecutive Year TORONTO: 18 July 2013 —Overall customer satisfaction with the Big 51 and Midsize banks in Canada has increased, driven primarily by customers’ increasing understanding regarding fees and services. However, customers perceive banks as being profit driven, lagging in innovation and not customer focused, according to the J.D. Power 2013 Canadian Retail Banking Customer Satisfaction StudySM released today. The study, now in its eighth year, examines customer satisfaction with their primary financial institution in three segments: Big 5 Banks, Midsize Banks and Credit Unions. In all segments, customer satisfaction is measured in seven factors (listed in order of importance): channel activities; account information; facilities; product offerings; fees; financial advisor; and problem resolution. Despite the growing interest of academics and practitioners in SIBs, the debate appears polarized around a series of recurrent aspects, and only a limited number of studies have sought to understand the risks and motivations related to similar initiatives. Using an exploratory approach based on a mixed-method grounded theory methodology, this study analyzed the results of 12 questionnaires that asked experts about their experiences and perceptions in SIB project development and implementation. The study identified and assessed three main groups of motivations, critical success factors, and risk factors by focusing on the private-sector SIB actors with the aim of understanding their motivations and their perceived main success drivers and risk factors. This work contributes to the knowledge on the conditions for attracting private sector actors and supporting policymakers in the development of new SIB models. The findings could facilitate the development of risk management practices for the purpose of stimulating the participation of private actors in SIB initiatives.

    A Guide to Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) Overview: Originally launched on April 9, 2020, CEBA is intended to support businesses by providing financing for their expenses that cannot be avoided or deferred as they take steps to safely navigate a period of shutdown, thereby helping to position businesses for successful relaunch when the economy reopens. This $55 billion program provides interest-free loans of up to $40,000 to small businesses and not-for-profits. Repaying the balance of the loan on or before December 31, 2022 will result in loan forgiveness of 25 percent (up to $10,000). As of June 26, 2020, businesses eligible for CEBA now include owner-operated small businesses that do not have a payroll, sole proprietors receiving business income directly, as well as family-owned corporations remunerating in the form of dividends rather than payroll. This means that more small businesses can access it. Applicants with $20,000 or less in payroll in 2019 will have to demonstrate having Eligible Non-Deferrable Expenses between Cdn.$40,000 and Cdn.$1,500,000 in 2020. Expenses are considered “Eligible Non-Deferrable Expenses” if they were already incurred in January and/or February 2020, or are due to a legal or contractual obligation as at March 1 and cannot be avoided or deferred beyond 2020 even during a period of shut down and depressed revenues as a result of COVID. CEBA is not intended to provide income support, or support for variable operating expenses to businesses. CEBA applicants agree that the government may conduct audits to confirm the nature of the expenses applicants use to establish their eligibility for CEBA, and acknowledge that inaccuracies may lead to legal consequences.

Power 2015 Canadian Retail Banking Satisfaction StudySM released today. The study, now in its 10th year, measures customer satisfaction with retail banks in two segments: Big 5 Banks1 and Midsize Banks.
