It is these insightful voices that this article unveils. Phenomenological research design was employed. Three research sites were targeted comprising two chiefdoms and covering four villages, two villages from each chief dom. Data was collected using interviews and focus group discussions. After coding the data, narrative and thematic methods of data analysis were used. Findings reveal that the value of adult education is measured informally by the number of the adult population able to access social amenities equitably and equally on one hand, and on the other, by their ability to read the „word and the world‟ as purported by Freire and Macedo (1987). Mpolomoka, Z Ambian Open University AMBIA Selina Band Mbono Vision Dube Zambian Open University Akombelwa Muyangana University of Zambia Esther Kanduza, Zambian Maina Kaleba, Zambian Open University Abstract This paper is anchored on the assumption that the world is approaching the end of two important international initiatives, the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2014) and the Millennium Development Goals (2015). Given such a scenario, Africa is gaining increased attention due to the innumerable challenges it faces in striving to achieve sustainable development. There is unanimity that African countries should improve their capacities to cope with emerging challenges. As a result, their higher education institutions need to drastically improve their own educational programmes and associated research facilities for training future generations of skilled personnel. This paper concludes by making critical observations on the general populace’s expectations of private higher education learning institutions. Keywords: Private higher education, Africa, Zambia, Learning Introduction The world we live in is radically changing from that of a couple of decades ago. It is an era of globalization, with growth of economic and social activities across national boundaries being common features. Berdahl (2008) outlines some of the major changes today, which include technological revolution in communications (the internet and large‐scale computerized information systems). Given such circumstances, both public and private institutions of higher learning face many challenges of local, national and global context. -

Through education, individuals acquire the skills they need to provide for themselves, contribute to the health and welfare of their families and communities, solve local problems, and grow the local and national economy. The role of universities in national development is the subject of interest. Universities have a major role to play in equipping students with knowledge and skills that would position them to be productive in society. With a growing demand in higher education in Zambia, public universities find it difficult to admit a large number of prospective students due to limited resources and spaces. In this regard, private participation in the provision of tertiary education has become paramount. A large number of private universities have been opened in the country. These universities are helping to meet the unfulfilled demand for higher education in the country. -

Lipimile Director and Chief Executive Officer COMESA Competition Commission George K Lipimile is the current Director and Chief Executive Officer of the COMESA Competition Commission. Prior to his current appointment, he served as Senior Advisor at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in the Division of Competition and Consumer Law Policy. At UNCTAD he was in charge of the technical assistance and capacity building programmes in the area of competition and consumer policies for the developing and least developed countries. Mr. Lipimile established and became the first Executive Director of the Zambia Competition Commission in Zambia (the first modern competition Authority in the Eastern and Southern African Region). His duties included advising the government on a range of trade and competition issues, including the negotiations of the Doha Rounds, WTO Agreements, EPAs negotiations, in addition to issues relating to the regional trade and economic integration of the SADC/COMESA Agreements. For a long time, Mr. Lipimile served as the head of Zambia Intellectual Property office. He was the Chairperson of the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) for two terms. He sits on several boards of research and academic institutions. Mr. Lipmile is highly consulted on issues pertaining to the enforcement of competition and consumer law and policy. -

ZAMBIA Focal Point: Mr. Athanasius Mulenga Review of the use of ODL in Zambia, 2014 1.0 Introduction and Background 1.1 Introduction Zambia is a signatory to many world education interventions. A few such world education interventions are: the Convention on the Rights of the Children (CRC) in which it is prescribed that every child has a right to quality education, the Education For All (EFA) that took place in Jomtien, Thailand in 1996 and adopted during the International World Forum which took place in Dakar, Senegal in 2000, where it was decided that every child needs to be cared for and protected. EFA called for expanding and improving Early Childhood Care Development and Education (ECCDE), and that children should be in school and attain free and compulsory quality basic (Primary) education. Then later, the Millennium Development goals(MDGs) aimed at eliminating extreme poverty and hunger, reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; ensuring environmental sustainability, developing a global partnership for development and, like for EFA goals, achieving universal primary education and promoting gender equality. In order to meet increasing demand, Zambia has adopted Open and Distance Learning (ODL) as another mode of educational delivery to complement the regular mode. 1.2 Background Since Independence, ODL has been embraced. Currently, the Zambian Government through the Ministry of Science, Vocational Training and Early Education (MoSVTEE) offers open learning at school level in regular schools and ODL schools where learners attend school in the afternoon and evening at various grade level and age groups. In the same vein, Distance Learning (DL) at this level is done in organised centres and by individuals who enroll with the Zambia College of Distance Education(ZACODE) which produces self-study educational materials in print and electronic format [released as Open Education Resources]with financial and technical assistance from COL. -

Zambia : Democracy on Trial Report of a mission by the non-governmental Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative The Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative was founded, as a charity, in 1987 in a non- governmental effort to make human rights more significant for the Commonwealth and, so far as possible, to improve the conditions of citizens in what are now 53 member countries. It is supported by the Commonwealth Journalists Association, the Commonwealth Trade Union Council, the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, the Commonwealth Legal Education Association and the Commonwealth Medical Association. An international Advisory Group chaired by Flora McDonald issued a comprehensive report, Put Our World to Rights, in 1991. This was influential in persuading Heads of Government meeting at Harare to adopt a strong commitment to human rights. In 1992 the Initiative appointed a new Advisory Commission, chaired by Dr. Kamal Hossain. This Advisory Commission issued a further report, Act Right Now, in 1993, urging action to fulfil the promise of Harare. The latest report, Rights Do Matter, was issued in 1995 with a view to strengthening the Harare commitments. The Initiative office moved from London to New Delhi on 1 August 1993 and was inaugurated the following day in the presence of the Vice-President of India and Dr. Kamal Hossain. Among its activities for that year, the Initiative ran a workshop for non- governmental organisations in Kenya, in September 1993, on the Protection of the Rights of Refugees. In December 1994 it held one in New Delhi on Police, Prisons and Human Rights in South Asia and in February 1996 with Minority Rights Group, another on the rights of tribal and indigenous peoples. -
