Habis Badi Gelap Pasti Terbitlah Terang Berlalu the Following Lexicon Is an Effort to Clarify How Indonesian Politics Is Naturalized farid rakun Habis Badi Gelap Pasti W e Terbit- lah a t h e Terang r 1 Berlalu 1 Translatable to: “After the darkness of storm light is born will surely pass.” It is a mash-up of Marga T.’s 1974 S novel Badai Pasti Berlalu c (The Storm Will Surely Pass, holding similar a meaning with p “every cloud has a silver lining”) with Habis e Gelap Terbitlah Terang (After g Darkness, Light is Born). The first was adapted into a film o by Teguh Karya in 1977 with a a soundtrack hit with the same title by Chrisye, which t Erwin Gutawa restaged into a live orchestra recording in 1999, then into a 26-episode 8 soap opera series in 1996, and finally re-made by Teddy Soeriaatmadja in 2007. The latter is a book composed by J.H. Abendanon using letters by Kartini, first published in 1911 with the title Door Duisternis Tot Licht. It was first translated in an abridged format to Malay in 1922 by Armijn Pane, with a different title and order. 162 Habis Badi Gelap Pasti Terbitlah Terang Berlalu The following lexicon is an effort to clarify how Indonesian politics is naturalized. The Indonesian language—historically a melting-pot of outside influences—mixes Malay, Sanskrit, Indian, Portuguese, Dutch, Arabic, and increasingly English. For the purpose of this piece, the original Indonesian is kept with my English translation. I started by selecting terms that either portray the naval and/or oceanic hegemony increasingly grasping the national imagination, and those that are metaphorically utilized by the most popular national media to render anything political also natural. Quotes are taken from the naval historian Adrian B. Lapian’s 2009 book, Orang Laut-Bajak Laut-Raja Laut: Sejarah Kawasan Laut Sulawesi Abad XIX, and three media outlets: Kompas, a daily newspaper with more than two million readers, as well as its online citizen journalism portal, Kompasiana, and Tempo, a weekly magazine with more than 600,000 readers. The temporal window of the collected excerpts below is from early 2009 to late 2014. They were selected because they represent either the latest or the simplest usage of the respective terms. The naturalization processes represented here aim to pacify the masses through narrative. As in the recent understanding of Jakarta’s yearly flood (up until 2012, flood was still perceived as a series of disasters happening once every five years), these grand narratives insist that both inundation and state political process are inevitable—and, like weather, cyclical. Political impacts, then, are there for everyone to absorb, suppressing our desire and potential for change—not only in the reading of what has passed but also the course of future episodes. These processes occur not only through national media outlets and official public statements, but also combine with rumour, scandals, and other tittle-tattles to create a robust myth-making machine. 163 farid rakun Archipelago Barat (west) “Derived from the Greek arch (major, “Siapa tahu, angin dapat membawa kita main) and pelagos (sea). Editor's Note UNTIL very recent times, the term melodrama was used pejoratively to typify inferior works of art that subscribed to an aesthetic of hyperbole and that were given to sensationalism and the crude manipulation of the audiences' emotions. However, during the last fifteen years or so, there has been a distinct rehabilitation of the term consequent upon a retheoriz ing of such questions as the nature of representation in cinema, the role of ideology, and female subjectivity in films.

  • The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema
The Cultural Traffic of Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema Ekky Imanjaya Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies December 2016 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Abstract Classic Indonesian exploitation films (originally produced, distributed, and exhibited in the New Order’s Indonesia from 1979 to 1995) are commonly negligible in both national and transnational cinema contexts, in the discourses of film criticism, journalism, and studies. Nonetheless, in the 2000s, there has been a global interest in re-circulating and consuming this kind of films. The films are internationally considered as “cult movies” and celebrated by global fans. This thesis will focus on the cultural traffic of the films, from late 1970s to early 2010s, from Indonesia to other countries. By analyzing the global flows of the films I will argue that despite the marginal status of the films, classic Indonesian exploitation films become the center of a taste battle among a variety of interest groups and agencies. The process will include challenging the official history of Indonesian cinema by investigating the framework of cultural traffic as well as politics of taste, and highlighting the significance of exploitation and B-films, paving the way into some findings that recommend accommodating the movies in serious discourses on cinema, nationally and globally.

Thanks for being with me in travelling the less trodden path. Acknowledgements Praise to Allah, the Lord Almighty that I can finally get to the end of the tunnel. This thesis will never be in its final version without the constant support, confidence, and intellectually rigorous feedback and inspiration from my supervisor: Prof Ariel Heryanto. He was the one who convinced me that I could do a PhD, something previously unthinkable. He was also the one who convinced me to work in an area which I had never trodden before: masculinities. But, Robert Frost said that the road less travelled has ‘made all the difference’. It did and will always do so. My most sincere appreciation also goes to my two other highly supportive supervisors: Dr Ross Tapsell and Dr Roald Maliangkaij. Their confidence in me, intellectual insights and support have helped me build my self-confidence. They are just exceptionally kind and supportive. I would also like to thank Prof Kathryn Robinson for countless hours of fruitful discussion on masculinities in Indonesia and theories of masculinities.

  • Pemutaran Dihadiri Oleh Tinta, Pak Hadi, Prinka, Kuro, Faris, Dan Beberapa Komikus Yang Kebetulan Sedang Berada Di C2O: Dimas, Benny
REPORT PEMUTARAN & DISKUSI FILM Tjoet Nja’Dhien | Eros Djarot (1986) Sabtu, 15 Agustus 2009 @ 17.00 Perpustakaan C2O, Jl.

PROJECTED RADIANCE The Cinema of Indonesia The Museum of Modern Art The Asia Society April 26-May 10,1991 May 1 -May 12,1991 FILM EXHIBITION OPENS AT THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART AND THE ASIA SOCIETY AS PART OF FESTIVAL OF INDONESIA, 1990-91 In conjunction with the Festival of Indonesia, 1990-91, a national celebration of Indonesia's cultural heritage, concurrent programs devoted to Indonesian filmmaking are featured in PROJECTED RADIANCE: THE CINEMA OF INDONESIA at The Museum of Modern Art (April 26 - May 10, 1991) and The Asia Society (May 1-12, 1991). PROJECTED RADIANCE (the term is the literal translation of the Javanese word for film) surveys forty years of cinema since the country's independence in 1950. A complete schedule of films is attached. Indonesian cinema emerged with the War of Independence (1945-49). The work of pioneering filmmakers of this period became not only a record of the struggle against Dutch colonialism, but also an integral part of a process of national rediscovery, definition, and reconstruction. Earlier in the century, the Dutch had introduced filmmaking to Indonesian culture, which already possessed an art form of the projected image, the traditional shadow puppet theater {wayang kulit). World War II and occupation by the Japanese had halted all film production except for a few wartime propaganda documentaries. Postwar film production, with the use of amateur actors (some of whom later became political and military leaders) and stories of war, became 2 intertwined with the process of national independence. Such works in the exhibition include Arsul Sani's The Barbed Hire Fence {Pagar Kawat Berduri) (1961), a prisoner-of-war drama and prime example of revolutionary cinema, and Nya'Abbas Acub's Three Fugitives {Tiga Buronan) (1957), a comedy about a roving band of bandits humbled by an educated youth that touches upon the emergence of a new set of progressive values.
