Copeia 2009, No. 1, 50–56 A New Black Baryancistrus with Blue Sheen from the Upper Orinoco (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) Nathan K. Lujan1, Mariangeles Arce2, and Jonathan W. Armbruster1 Baryancistrus beggini, new species, is described from the upper Rı´o Orinoco and lower portions of its tributaries, the Rı´o Guaviare in Colombia and Rı´o Ventuari in Venezuela. Baryancistrus beggini is unique within Hypostominae in having a uniformly dark black to brown base color with a blue sheen in life, and the first three to five plates of the midventral series strongly bent, forming a distinctive keel above the pectoral fins along each side of the body. It is further distinguished by having a naked abdomen, two to three symmetrical and ordered predorsal plate rows including the nuchal plate, and the last dorsal-fin ray adnate with adipose fin via a posterior membrane that extends beyond the preadipose plate up to half the length of the adipose-fin spine. Se describe una nueva especie, Baryancistrus beggini, del alto Rı´o Orinoco y las partes bajas de sus afluentes: el rı´o Guaviare en Colombia, y el rı´o Ventuari en Venezuela. Baryancistrus beggini es la u´ nica especie entre los Hypostominae que presenta fondo negro oscuro a marro´ n sin marcas, con brillo azuloso en ejemplares vivos. Las primeras tres a cinco placas de la serie medioventral esta´n fuertemente dobladas, formando una quilla notable por encima de las aletas pectorales en cada lado del cuerpo. Baryancistrus beggini se distingue tambie´n por tener el abdomen desnudo, dos o tres hileras de placas predorsales sime´tricas y ordenadas (incluyendo la placa nucal) y el u´ ltimo radio de la aleta dorsal adherido a la adiposa a trave´s de una membrana que se extiende posteriormente, sobrepasando la placa preadiposa y llegando hasta la mitad de la espina adiposa. -

The new species are distinguished from congeners (P. barbatus, P. corantijniensis, P. depressus, P. nigrescens, P. reus, and P. zawadzkii) by the coloration pattern. Pseudancistrus kayabi has dark bars on the dorsal and caudal fins which are similar to that of P. reus from the Caroní River, Venezuela. Pseudancistrus asurini is unique among Pseudancistrus in having whitish tips of the dorsal and caudal fins in juveniles to medium-sized adults. -

RINGUELET SUMMARY: The zoogeography and ecology of fresh water fishes from Argentina and comments on ichthyogeography of South America. This study comprises a critical review of relevant literature on the fish fauna, genocentres, means of dispersal, barriers, ecological groups, coactions, and ecological causality of distribution, including an analysis of allotopic species in the lame lake or pond, the application of indexes of diversity of severa¡ biotopes and comments on historical factors. Its wide scope allows to clarify several aspects of South American Ichthyogeography. The location of Argentina ichthyological fauna according to the above mentioned distributional scheme as well as its relation with the most important hydrography systems are also provided, followed by additional information on its distribution in the Argentine Republic, including an analysis through the application of Simpson's similitude test in several localities. E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract A new species of Anomaloglossus is described from the Venezuelan Guayana; it is the 21st described species of Anomaloglossus from the Guiana Shield, and the 15th from Venezuela. This species inhabits rainforest on granitic substrate on the northwestern edge of the Guiana Shield (Estado Amazonas, Venezuela). The new species is distinguished from congeners by sexual dimorphism, its unique male color pattern (including two bright orange parotoid marks and two orange paracloacal spots on dark brown background), call characteristics and other morphological features. Though to the new species is known only from the northwestern edge of the Guiana Shield, its distribution may be more extensive, as there are no significant biogeographic barriers isolating the type locality from the granitic lowlands of Venezuela. In this paper, I review the different clades of catfi shes, all catfi sh fami- lies, and provide information on some of the more interesting aspects of catfi sh biology that express the great diversity that is present in the order. It inhabits the slopes of Aprada tepui, a sandstone table mountain in southern Venezuela. The new species is distinguished from close relatives by its particular pattern, absence of fringes on fingers, presence of a lingual process, and yellow and orange ventral coloration. It is the 18th described species of Colostethus from Venezuelan Guayana. While La Marca (1992) referred four species, Barrio-Amorós et al. (2004) reported 17 species; one more species will appear soon (Barrio-Amorós & Brewer- Carías in press). The discovery of new species has coincided with progressive exploration of the Guiana Shield, one of the most inaccessible and unknown areas in the world. Barrio- Amorós et al. (2004) reviewed the taxonomic history of Colostethus from Venezuelan Guayana. Here, I provide the description of an additional new species from Aprada tepui, situated west of Chimantá massif and Apacara river. This species was collected by Charles Brewer-Carías and colleagues, during ongoing exploration of Venezuelan Guayana. The urge to garner status, which reflected on the group and the individual, and the desire for access to a myriad of materials and products formed im- portant motivations for articulating pre-Colonial interaction circuits. Through the adoption of a multi-disciplinary perspective, this paper seeks to develop a holistic view on the opera- tion of interaction network(s) across a wide, socio-politically diverse region between 6000 BC and the early Colonial period. The adoption of a diachronic, macro-geographic perspec- tive will help evaluate the structure through time of these social networks at archipelagic and pan-Caribbean scales. How to bring about forest-smart mining: strategic entry points for institutional donors November 2020 How to bring about forest-smart mining: strategic entry points for institutional donors November 2020 About this report: The World Bank’s PROFOR Trust Fund developed the concept of Forest-Smart Mining in 2017 to raise awareness of different economic sectors’ impacts upon forest health and forest values, such as biodiversity, ecosystem services, human development, supporting and regulating services and cultural values. From 2017 to 2019, Levin Sources, Fauna and Flora International, Swedish Geological AB, and Fairfields Consulting were commissioned by the World Bank/PROFOR Trust fund to investigate good and bad practices of all scales of mining in forest landscapes, and the contextual conditions that support ‘forest-smart’ mining. Three reports and an Executive Summary were published in May 2019, further to a series of events and launches in New York, Geneva, and London which have led to related publications. This report was commissioned by a philanthropic foundation to provide an analysis of the key initiatives and stakeholders working to address the negative impacts of mining on forests. The purpose of the report is to provide a menu of recommendations to inform the development of a new program to bring about forest-smart mining. In the interest of raising awareness and stimulating appetite and action by other institutional donors to step into this space, the client has permitted Levin Sources and Fauna & Flora International to further develop and publish the report. A New Species of Osteocephalus (Anura: Hylidae) from Guyana

Corrected 6-VI-2000. Accepted 19-IX-2000. Abstract: A new member of the genus Osteocephalus is described from the Pakaraima mountains of western Guyana. This species is the smallest known member of the genus and is probably closely related to O. subtilis. Both share a small size (less than 40 mm snout-vent length), large and bulgy eyes directed somewhat rostrally, green bones, smooth and brownish dorsal skin, relatively short and truncate snout, small tympanum, subgular and laterally expanded vocal sac, poorly developed subarticular and supernumerary tubercles, a supra-anal glan- dular ridge, and cream-white venter and subocular region. The new species can be distinguished from O. sub- tilis by the Buff iris (vs black), smaller overall size (32.7 vs 35.8–38.8 mm snout-vent length), relatively larger toe disks, and less developed foot webbing. The cranium of the new species is well ossified, relatively reduced in width between the orbits, without an exposed frontoparietal fontanelle and with the anterior arm of the squa- mosal extending to about half the distance to the maxillary. The vocal sac is subgularly poorly developed and possess lateral extensions to the area behind the jaw angles.
