Jonathan Shorrock 8 Year old limousin topped the trade at £1660 to John Clarke which reflected the strong and quality of the Bull. Cows and calves met a firm trade with top call coming from Bernard Slater limousin heifer selling at £1800 not far behind was P Fletcher who won First prize with a older cow which sold to Judge David Capstick at £1720 Feeders and Culls run with the bull were good to sell. In the bull section young bulls made to £950 and some good shaped black and Whites to £690. There were plenty of people ringside but a top price of £1600 for a good heifer from Brian and Lisa Hall just about summed up the enthusiasm. Dispersal cows always buck the trend with Messrs Travis from Lupton selling at £920 and £1110 to Sussex. In calf heifers from Malcolm Bretton and Exchange sold to £1220. Next weeks sale is the Dugdale Nutrition Dairy show with 30+ milkers entered already and 10 pedigree young stock. Fingers crossed for an improvement in the weather and milk price. Settle farmers John and James Dugdale proved that £2000 is still possible with the right animal followed by the winner of the non-registered class from David & Sue Graveston at £1950. Jeremy Taylor took the Ribblesdale trophy with a smart white heifer with a bombproof pedigree selling at £1920 to TR Wharton, Penrith. Mr & Mrs Graveston had a good run of cattle with a red and white second lacation at £1610 and three others at £1600. Germany was also represented in a day of colour and rare breeds with Livestock Exchange Ltd selling at £1540 for a newly calved heifer and averaging £750 for a run of bulling heifers. The sale ended with a full pen of heifer calves selling to £430 for David Mattinson and averaging £360 for ten. Today’s sale exceeded most peoples expectations with just a handful cattle missing the trade. The eight week old British Blue bull calf, from John Shuttleworth, Rylstone, won the best British Blue bull calf before picking up the champion rosette, from pre-sale judge-John Swann, Little Ouseburn, York Brian Blezard, Ribchester, Preston picked up the reserve champion award with his seven week old British Blue bull calf which had earlier in the day won second prize in the British Blue bull class, which sold for £535 to Mr Swann. The same purchaser took home the third prize bull calf from David & Pauline, Newbould, Clitheroe at £535. Neil Edmondson, Holcombe, Bury won the first prize British Blue heifer class, the calf went on to sell for a very respectable £418 to Messrs Pilkingtons, Scarisbrick, Ormskirk. However, topping the day’s sale prices was Alan Bowker, Cowling, Keighley with his impressive pen of five British Blue bull calves which sold for £560 each to Andrew Baxter, Garsforth, Leeds and Doug Graves, Carlisle with a British Blue heifer which sold at £480 to Messrs Pilkingtons. In the other heifer class-Alec Simpson, Bolton by Bowland picked up the first prize rosette with his Simmental heifer calf which sold for £408. A Charolais heifer from Pete Dakin, Sawley, Clitheroe won the second prize rosette which sold for £410. The champion beast an 8 month old heifer sired by a BB bull & out of a Limousin cow, fromthe specialist partnership-John Mellin and Clare Cropper, Long Preston, Skipton sold for an impressive £1780 to pre-sale show judge Michael Wynne, Padfield, Glossop. This was a great achievement for the Mellin and Cropper partnership having previously won this annual show 6 times in the last 11years. Next in the bidding stakes was Steven Chapman, Theakston, Beadle with a Simmental cow with heifer calf at foot which sold at £1730 to JM Townsend, Laneshawbridge.The reserve champion an 11 month old, British Blue steer from Mark Schofield, Rossendale sold for £985 to M Wynne. Feeding bulls peaked at £1050 and £1000 from T Robinson & Son, Slaidburn selling to GH West, Fridaythorpe, Driffield. The sale leader-a Beltex cross shearling ewe with single lamb at foot, from Anthony Thompson, Foulridge, Colne was knocked down after a flurry of bids at £410 to pre-sale judges Mark Harryman and Sarah Warriner, Pickering, North Yorkshire. A packed ringside saw Mr Thompson, achieve an outstanding trade for his annual consignment of eighty top quality sheep, with buyers from Yorkshire, Cheshire and Lancashire taking them home, these included again the duo Harryman and Warriner who picked the champion pen of five Beltex shearlings ewes with single Beltex lambs at foot, which earlier in the day had picked up the first prize rosette in the best pen of Continental ewes and lambs at £390 a family. A smart pen of Beltex ewes with single lambs at foot were quickly knocked down for £315 a family to A Lawson & Son, Saxton, Tadcaster. Numerous other pens from the same vendor sold from £238 to £2850 a family,. Continental hoggs with lambs at foot attracted fantastic prices, with regular vendor John Stapleton, Skipton, North Yorks selling his first prize pen of continental hoggs with lambs at foot which went on the win the reserve championship award in the pre-sale show at £272 to David Jackson, Northwich, Cheshire. Mr Stapleton’s consignment averaged £234 a family, selling to purchasers far and wide between £215 and £272. Father and son team, Raymond and Robert Johnson, Felliscliffe, Harrogate sold a good run of Mule hoggs with lambs at foot which topped at £205, with the majority of these finding new homes in Derbyshire. Andrew Leach, Saltburn by Sea, Cleveland was triumphant at Gisburn Auction Marts May show of breeding and store pigs, last Saturday. His pen of seven Pietrain cross gilts, won the best pen of store pigs class and sold for £70 ahead to Cock of the North Poultry Ltd, Mexborough, South Yorkshire. Peter Woof, Stainton, Kendal sold a pair of Pietrain gilts at £124 each to John Stephenson, Bordley, Skipton. Trade for prime pigs was strong with David Pawson, Blackburn achieving £122 for his Pietrain gilts taking them home was G Dawson, Otley, West Yorkshire.
