    Club Champions Winners’ Circle 34 THE MET GOLFER DECEMBER 2006/JANUARY 2007 WWW.MGAGOLF.ORG Bridging the Gap Carol Fontana Carol Fontana first played golf at age 11 with her father at Dyker Beach in Brooklyn, but soon put her clubs away for several years due to the lack of organized junior golf programs at the course. She began playing more seriously twenty years ago, and eventually worked her Handicap Index down to between 1 and 2. Power is her big advantage: She routinely belts her drives 240 to 250 yards. That’s long, but still not long enough to carry the Narrows. So Carol takes the bridge between her two clubs, the Women’s Division of South Shore on Staten Island and the Brookridge Women’s Golf Club at Dyker Beach. Fortunately for her, Brookridge held its championship on Saturdays and South Shore on Sundays, so she didn't have to battle the weekday traffic on the Verrazano to win both titles. The right foot should be in the rear of the left, the left side of the body being braced throughout. In swinging, care should be taken to see that the right shoulder does not get in advance of the club-head on the down swing. If it does, a ‘cut’ will result. Hit ‘outward’ more than in the ordinary swing, the pressure coming almost entirely from the right side, right forearm, and wrist. The bracing of the left side resists this pressure almost to the point of complete domination, and prevents the wild ‘hook’ that is so often seen when players attempt this most skilful stroke.” —J.
