Susan Dekalb Wins WMGA 2008 Player of the Year the Judy Bell Awarded to Carolyn Cudone Amy Alcott Sparkles at the Annual Meeting Founded 1899 49 Knollwood Road Elmsford, NY 10523 (914) 592-7888 www.wmga.com Elly McKenna, Editor Fall 2008 Susan DeKalb Wins WMGA 2008 Player of the Year Congratulations to Sue DeKalb, our Player of the Year! Sue won the WMGA Match Play Championship and finished fourth in the Stroke Play Championship. She also made it to the round of 16 in the USGA Women’s Senior Amateur. She won the GSWGA Senior Stroke Play Championship and finished second in the GSWGA Stroke Play and Round Robin Championships. What a magnificent year of competition for this great athlete. Sue shared her winning attitude with us at the Annual Meeting, “Golf has given me more than just a way to stay competitive. I have made many new friends through golf, shared special moments with my teammates and have enjoyed being a part of the WMGA and Garden State Boards. I am very grateful to be a part of this organization and I will always treasure this award.” Thank you, Sue, for bringing your finest effort to every tournament, and we are honored to have you represent our organization as our very best in 2008. Susan DeKalb, Player of the Year and Kathy Cosgrove, VP Competitions The Judy Bell Awarded to Carolyn Cudone This year the WMGA presented the 12th Judy Bell Award, named in honor of the first female president of the USGA, to Carolyn Cudone, a living legend in the world of golf. Carolyn grew up on Staten Island and was encouraged to pick up the game by her mother who loved to play. She won her first WMGA title in 1938 and went on to collect five WMGA Match Play Championships and two Shore Championships, the precursor to our Stroke Play Championship. Carolyn also is an 11-time winner of the New Jersey State Women’s Stroke Play Championship and six-time winner of the New Jersey Women’s Match Play Championship. Carolyn flew up to the Annual Meeting from her home in South Carolina to accept her award. Carolyn charmed the audience with remarks regarding her passion for the game and the blessings golf has bestowed upon her life. At 90 years young, Carolyn, too, hopes that her game will improve! On any sunny afternoon you may find her Carolyn Cudone, Judy Bell Award Winner teeing it up on the course at Myrtle Beach, working on her smooth and graceful swing. Thank you, Carolyn, for and Kathy Dennis, WMGA President honoring the Annual Meeting with your joyful and spirited presence. Amy Alcott Sparkles at the Annual Meeting Amy Alcott, a member of both the LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame, entertained the audience at the Annual Meeting with stories from her junior playing days to her celebrated LPGA career. Amy can tell a delightful tale for every celebrity she has met, every golfer she has known and every course she has played. She has a book due out in March, “The Leaderboard-Conversations on Golf and Life,” in which she shares her gifts of perspective and insight. Surely it is filled with humor, compassion and intelligence — the very hallmarks of Amy Alcott’s personality. Amy so enjoyed hearing about the excitement and variety of WMGA amateur competition at our Annual Meeting. For all of the tournament trophies and winning photographs set on her mantle there seems to be one thing missing from Amy’s coffee table… and that is a copy of “Tee Talk.” Amy, here is your first issue, and thank you from all of us at the WMGA. Special thanks, Donna Young, for introducing your long time friend to the WMGA. Theresa Piscareta and Christine Tozzo from Lake Isle had a superb second day of play to earn 2nd Gross with their score of 168 (86-82). Club Champions Winners’ Circle 34 THE MET GOLFER DECEMBER 2006/JANUARY 2007 WWW.MGAGOLF.ORG Bridging the Gap Carol Fontana Carol Fontana first played golf at age 11 with her father at Dyker Beach in Brooklyn, but soon put her clubs away for several years due to the lack of organized junior golf programs at the course. She began playing more seriously twenty years ago, and eventually worked her Handicap Index down to between 1 and 2. Power is her big advantage: She routinely belts her drives 240 to 250 yards. That’s long, but still not long enough to carry the Narrows. So Carol takes the bridge between her two clubs, the Women’s Division of South Shore on Staten Island and the Brookridge Women’s Golf Club at Dyker Beach. Fortunately for her, Brookridge held its championship on Saturdays and South Shore on Sundays, so she didn't have to battle the weekday traffic on the Verrazano to win both titles. The MGA sent out championship forms to all member clubs. Please write to [email protected] if your club champions are not listed. RS ae eS...”6h “PULLING” A BALL “To ‘pull’ a ball at will, two factors predominate, the ‘stance’ and the action of the right side of the body and right shoulder at the moment of impact. The right foot should be in the rear of the left, the left side of the body being braced throughout. In swinging, care should be taken to see that the right shoulder does not get in advance of the club-head on the down swing. If it does, a ‘cut’ will result. Hit ‘outward’ more than in the ordinary swing, the pressure coming almost entirely from the right side, right forearm, and wrist. The bracing of the left side resists this pressure almost to the point of complete domination, and prevents the wild ‘hook’ that is so often seen when players attempt this most skilful stroke.” —J.
