She also made it to the round of 16 in the USGA Women’s Senior Amateur. She won the GSWGA Senior Stroke Play Championship and finished second in the GSWGA Stroke Play and Round Robin Championships. What a magnificent year of competition for this great athlete. Sue shared her winning attitude with us at the Annual Meeting, “Golf has given me more than just a way to stay competitive. I have made many new friends through golf, shared special moments with my teammates and have enjoyed being a part of the WMGA and Garden State Boards. I am very grateful to be a part of this organization and I will always treasure this award.” Thank you, Sue, for bringing your finest effort to every tournament, and we are honored to have you represent our organization as our very best in 2008. The Judy Bell Awarded to Carolyn Cudone This year the WMGA presented the 12th Judy Bell Award, named in honor of the first female president of the USGA, to Carolyn Cudone, a living legend in the world of golf. Carolyn grew up on Staten Island and was encouraged to pick up the game by her mother who loved to play. She won her first WMGA title in 1938 and went on to collect five WMGA Match Play Championships and two Shore Championships, the precursor to our Stroke Play Championship. Carolyn also is an 11-time winner of the New Jersey State Women’s Stroke Play Championship and six-time winner of the New Jersey Women’s Match Play Championship. Carolyn flew up to the Annual Meeting from her home in South Carolina to accept her award. Carolyn charmed the audience with remarks regarding her passion for the game and the blessings golf has bestowed upon her life. At 90 years young, Carolyn, too, hopes that her game will improve! On any sunny afternoon you may find her Carolyn Cudone, Judy Bell Award Winner teeing it up on the course at Myrtle Beach, working on her smooth and graceful swing. Thank you, Carolyn, for and Kathy Dennis, WMGA President honoring the Annual Meeting with your joyful and spirited presence. Amy Alcott Sparkles at the Annual Meeting Amy Alcott, a member of both the LPGA and World Golf Halls of Fame, entertained the audience at the Annual Meeting with stories from her junior playing days to her celebrated LPGA career. Amy can tell a delightful tale for every celebrity she has met, every golfer she has known and every course she has played. She has a book due out in March, “The Leaderboard-Conversations on Golf and Life,” in which she shares her gifts of perspective and insight. Surely it is filled with humor, compassion and intelligence — the very hallmarks of Amy Alcott’s personality. Amy so enjoyed hearing about the excitement and variety of WMGA amateur competition at our Annual Meeting. For all of the tournament trophies and winning photographs set on her mantle there seems to be one thing missing from Amy’s coffee table… and that is a copy of “Tee Talk.” Amy, here is your first issue, and thank you from all of us at the WMGA. Special thanks, Donna Young, for introducing your long time friend to the WMGA. Thirteen teams took up the challenge of playing their best golf on two different courses in two days. The Canyon Club in Armonk and the Mahopac Golf Club in Mahopac tested the players and they answered with some excellent scores. Canyon Club is known for its challenging Par 3’s and its well-bunkered greens. Mahopac always offers the challenge of water and lighting fast greens. Despite some initial fog and rain, Louise Di Chiaro and Hekyung Hyun from Osiris played consistent golf and led the field on both days earning the low Gross prize with a 161 (80-81). Theresa Piscareta and Christine Tozzo from Lake Isle had a superb second day of play to earn 2nd Gross with their score of 168 (86-82). Dawn Lowell and Kim Baier from Mahopac made brilliant use of their local knowledge to earn the low Net prize with a score of 134 (71-63). 19th Sis Choate Pinehurst Tournament Garden City Country Club, September 25

This year the Sis Choate Pinehurst Tournament was hosted by the Garden City Country Club on . The competitive field of 28 teams braved an unseasonably cold and windy day with a persistent threat of rain. The was in terrific condition with speedy greens and extremely difficult pin placements. The challenge set by the course and the weather didnot intimidate this inspired group of golfers. The Gross scores ranged between a low of 71 and a high of 87. Great golf, Ladies! With scores so close, the competition was intense. At the end of the day, there was a three-way tie for low Gross with a score of 71. Laura Algiero, Westchester Hills, and Gwen Fisher, Fenway, won the Sis Choate Trophy in a match of cards. Cheryl Brayman, North Shore, and Denise Martorana, Southampton, Laura Algiero (l) and Gwen Fisher (r), Sis Choate Pinehurst Champions claimed 2nd Gross. They did a wonderful job providing breakfast, wraps at the half way house for late players and a delicious buffet for lunch. All in all, it was an extremely successful day with superb play and a wonderful venue. Claire Riccio Met Rep, Garden City Country Club

3 FAMILY ALBUM 78th Husband-Wife “A” Championship Whippoorwill Club, September 17 The 78th Husband-Wife “A” Championship was played at the Whippoorwill Club on a beautiful September day with 24 couples participating. This was a tremendous showing given the fact that the financial markets had taken a terrible downturn on the previous day. Mia and Don Keum, Whippoorwill is one of the great classic courses, designed in 1929 by Donald Ross and later renovated by Husband-Wife “A” Champions Charles Banks. Challenges are found on every hole, set by the steep terrain, tree-lined fairways, and hard and fast greens. If that were not enough, there are also a good number of doglegs which require players to use every club in the bag. Mia and Don Keum of Minisceongo played the Pinehurst format to perfection, shooting a 70 to win the Low Gross prize. Their score was certainly helped by Mia’s Hole-in-One on the 8th hole measuring 175 yds! Don was all smiles as he watched his wife’s ball drop into the hole. Becky and Mark Montgelas, Wee Burn, were just one shot behind with a 71 giving them 2nd Gross. Sarah and Robert Cohn, Fresh Meadow, claimed 3rd Gross with a 73. Low Net honors were awarded to Stacey and Frank Riech, Engineers, for their fine score of 74-63. Jane and Adam Kugler, Alpine, posted a 71- 65 to take 2nd Net. Many thanks go to Whippoorwill and its entire staff for hosting such a superb day of golf.

54th Husband-Wife “B” Championship Nissequogue Golf Club, August 5 The 54th Husband-Wife “B” Championship took place on a nice summer day at Nissequogue Golf Club with 32 couples competing for the silver. The breathtaking water views and challenging elevations Joe and Poppy Holmes, Husband-Wife “B” Champions were reason enough to want to play and compete on this special course. Joe and Poppy Holmes from Silvermine traveled by ferry across Long

Island Sound, which must have been a very relaxed ride, as they played consistent golf from tee to green. No Deborah and Raymond Fell, three putts from these two! Their score of 77 set the mark earning them the low Gross trophy. Barbara and Jim Husband- Wife “B” Net Winners Thorpe, Southward Ho, garnered 2nd Gross with an 80. 5 67th John B. Mackie Memorial Tournament Inwood Country Club, October 7 Inwood Country Club, once again, provided a formidable challenge to some of the WMGA’s best golfers on this brisk fall day. The course was in wonderful shape but high winds and difficult pin placements demanded some superb shot-making. The ladies from Whippoorwill, Yvonne Thiel and Sandy Jackson, played a wonderful round together, shooting an 81 to win the low Gross prize. Neither had played the event in many years and were delighted to take on the task of navigating narrow fairways and well-bunkered greens. Yvonne and Sandy are not conservative players by nature, but Inwood demanded that kind of mindset. They played one shot at a time, grinding away, taking advantage of good shots and trying to minimize the damage that was brought on by an errant swing or a sudden swirling gust of wind. The true test of this team actually came on a par 3 when Yvonne, an engineer by profession, was mesmerized by the airline jets taking off and landing at nearby JFK International Airport. She has always been enthralled by planes and the physics of flight. Sandy skillfully guided Yvonne back to the task at hand, and the putt was made for par! Sandy Jackson (l) and Yvonne Thiel (r), John B. Mackie Champions Inwood’s place in golf history was never lost on its competitors. In fact, Team Whippoorwill’s drive on the 18th hole landed in the right rough, very near the plaque commemorating ’ first US Open victory in 1923. While Jones hit a two-iron onto the green from there to make birdie and win, discretion dictated that Yvonne and Sandy should lay up short of the water and walk humbly yet happily away with a bogey 5, earning them the trophy. Low Net honors went to Pamela Dolph, Nissequogue, and Sandra Heeter, St. George’s, for a fine score of 88-75. The WMGA thanks the Inwood Country Club for their gracious hospitality and generosity. We are indeed fortunate to have the opportunity to play this beautiful links-style course every year.

48th Better Ball “A” Championship Manasquan River Golf Club, October 14 &15 On October 14th and 15,th the Better Ball “A” Championship was held at Manasquan River Golf Club in Brielle, New Jersey. The sunny skies and warm temperatures for the month of October made this an exceptional tournament. 40 teams teed it up eager to test their skills on this wonderful course. Fairways and greens were running hard and fast, but did not deter the players from posting some great scores which included several birdies and eagles. On the second day of play, it was exciting to be at the scoring table as it came down to the final groups to determine our winners. Fran Gacos from Copper Hill and Kristen Nash from Montclair hoisted the trophy with a two-day Gross score of 147 (73-74). Gail Flanagan, Westchester, and Lee Ann Lewis, Southward Ho, almost caught the winners with a 148 (75-73). Originally scheduled to be played on September 9th at Metuchen Golf & Country Club, the 42nd Senior “B” Championship was postponed until October 30th due to a rainstorm. Pam Santucci from Rye led the way on the scoreboard, shooting an 89 to win the low Gross crown. Three players tied for 2nd Gross with a score of 97: Diane Dam from Oak Hill, Hanni Ferguson from Woodlake, and Young Kim from Jumping Brook.
