Golf on Long Island GOLF ON LONG ISLAND 19O9 Published by the Passenger Department LONG ISLAND RAILROAD A. L. LANGDON HOWARD M. SMITH Traffic Manager Gen. Passenger Agent 263 FIFTH AVENUE, NEW YORK CITY GOLF <&<&<&<& on LONG ISLAND j HIS BOOKLET of informa- tion regarding Golf is pub- lished to convey to lovers of this ideal sport some definite information regarding the various links on Long Island, reached by the Long Island Railroad. The proximity of Long Island to New York, and the natural attractiveness of its golf courses make this beautiful island the favorite and most delightful territory in which to enjoy this popular out-door game. There are within easy reach of the metrop- olis fully a dozen courses, each of which has its special merits, and some of which are virtually unsurpassed outside of Scotland. The Garden City golf course ranks among the very first in the United States. The Salisbury links are also located at Garden City. Besides the famous Nassau links, on the ideal hills of the North Shore, and the Garden City links, on the rolling plains at Garden City, the National Golf Association has recently selected the strangely beautiful Shinnecock Hills for the official National Golf Club, in addition to the links now in use there. The sweet cool breeze from the ocean that daily sweeps the Island through the heated term gives a strength and accuracy to the player's arm and eye that is impossible on the inland greens. If one is fond of golf, and wishes to enjoy the game under the best conditions—climate, links and congenial company considered- there is no place that surpasses Long Island. Americans infatuated with golf established country and golf clubs, built ornate club- houses, laid out inland park courses, experimented with new types of equip- ment, and even modified time-honored rules. Scottish and English officials resented the upstart Americans who dared to challenge the traditions and authority of the sportsmen of St. Andrews and other hallowed centers of British golf, but in the long run the British had little power to stop or even slow down the inexorable tide of change.

She began playing more seriously twenty years ago, and eventually worked her Handicap Index down to between 1 and 2. Power is her big advantage: She routinely belts her drives 240 to 250 yards. That’s long, but still not long enough to carry the Narrows. So Carol takes the bridge between her two clubs, the Women’s Division of South Shore on Staten Island and the Brookridge Women’s Golf Club at Dyker Beach. Fortunately for her, Brookridge held its championship on Saturdays and South Shore on Sundays, so she didn't have to battle the weekday traffic on the Verrazano to win both titles. RS ae eS...”6h “PULLING” A BALL “To ‘pull’ a ball at will, two factors predominate, the ‘stance’ and the action of the right side of the body and right shoulder at the moment of impact. The right foot should be in the rear of the left, the left side of the body being braced throughout. In swinging, care should be taken to see that the right shoulder does not get in advance of the club-head on the down swing. If it does, a ‘cut’ will result. Hit ‘outward’ more than in the ordinary swing, the pressure coming almost entirely from the right side, right forearm, and wrist. The bracing of the left side resists this pressure almost to the point of complete domination, and prevents the wild ‘hook’ that is so often seen when players attempt this most skilful stroke.” —J.
