  • Relevance of Sri Krishna to Karyakartas
Balagokulam 5HOHYDQFHRI6UL.ULVKQDWR.DU\DNDUWDV Sri Krishna spells out the purpose his incarnation in Geeta as “to establish Dharma”(Dharma sansthaapanaarthaaya ). In our Sangh Prarthana recited in every Shakha, we say that we are organizing to protect Dharma (kritvaa asmad dharma rakshanam). In a way, we are only instruments in fulfilling the mission of Sri Krishna. Krishna’s life can be a beacon of light for us walking in this path. Rama and Krishna – most worshipped avatars Many are the incarnations of God. But Sri Rama and Sri Krishna are the most worshipped because their lives present the situations that we encounter in our own lives. They embodied the ideals in life by following which we all can enrich our own lives. Sri Rama’s image brings in our mind a sense of awe and respect. His personality is tall and magnanimous. Whereas, Sri Krishna’s personality has two sides. He is at once very extra-ordinary, superhuman and at once he is that adorable child from next-door, enchanting and playful. Every mother can see Krishna in her own child. Friend of all Krishna showed his divine and super-human powers again and again and yet ensured that there is no distance between him and others. Yashoda was awed to see the entire universe in his mouth. The very next moment, he was the same mischievous child, playing hide-and-seek with her. His friends were frightened and overwhelmed to see their friend subduing the fearsome snake (Kalinga). It took only a few minutes before they all went to steal the butter and play in the forest.

  • An Introduction to the Sattra Culture of Assam: Belief, Change in Tradition
Journal of Ethnology and Folkloristics 12 (2): 21–47 DOI: 10.2478/jef-2018-0009 AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SATTRA CULT URE OF ASSAM: BELIEF, CHANGE IN TRADITION AND CURRENT ENTANGLEMENT BABURAM SAIKIA PhD Student Department of Estonian and Comparative Folklore University of Tartu Ülikooli 16, 51003 Tartu, Estonia e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT In 16th-century Assam, Srimanta Sankaradeva (1449–1568) introduced a move- ment known as eka sarana nama dharma – a religion devoted to one God (Vishnu or Krishna). The focus of the movement was to introduce a new form of Vaishnava doctrine, dedicated to the reformation of society and to the abolition of practices such as animal sacrifice, goddess worship, and discrimination based on caste or religion. A new institutional order was conceptualised by Sankaradeva at that time for the betterment of human wellbeing, which was given shape by his chief dis- ciple Madhavadeva. This came to be known as Sattra, a monastery-like religious and socio-cultural institution. Several Sattras were established by the disciples of Sankaradeva following his demise. Even though all Sattras derive from the broad tradition of Sankaradeva’s ideology, there is nevertheless some theological seg- mentation among different sects, and the manner of performing rituals differs from Sattra to Sattra. In this paper, my aim is to discuss the origin and subsequent transformations of Sattra as an institution. The article will also reflect upon the implication of traditions and of the process of traditionalisation in the context of Sattra culture. I will examine the power relations in Sattras: the influence of exter- nal forces and the support of locals to the Sattra authorities.

  • About Deepawali - the Social Significance
About Deepawali - The Social Significance Deepa means a lamp and avali means a row. The word literally means a row of lights. We normally think that Deepawali is about a lamplight, a deepa. In fact, Deepawali is not about a single deepa, it is about many. It is about a collective, an organization, a formation of lamps. It is about the relationship between one lamp and the rest of the lamps in the collective. The secret message of deepawali is hidden in its very name. Let us begin with a short prayer that sums up the essence of this remarkable festival. Deepawali Prayer Om Asato Maa Sat Gamaya Tamaso Maa Jyotir Gamaya Mrityor Maa Amritam Gamaya Sat means the truth and a-sat is its negation or falsehood. So the first line means: lead me from Falsehood to Truth. Tamas is darkness or ignorance. And jyoti is light. So the second line means: lead me from darkness or ignorance to light or knowledge. The third line means lead me from death (mtriyu ) to immortality (amrita). Deepawali is the festival of lights symbolizing the lighting of the lamp of knowledge and removing ignorance, in our lives, and in those of others. It is this deeper message of social consciousness behind the glamour of Deepawali that this article attempts to convey. The Diya - Lamp The central theme behind deepawali rests on the concept of the Diya, the lamp. In Hindu tradition Ishwara or God is the "Knowledge principle," the Reality, the source of all knowledge. The light enables one to see the reality that is ever present.

  • Legends About the Celebrations of Diwali Festival
There are two popular legends about the celebrations of Diwali festival. Legend 1 : The killing of Narakasura Once upon a time there lived an asura called as Narakasura and he was ruling the kingdom of Pradyoshapuram. He prayed to Lord Brahma for several years and one day Lord Brahma appeared to him and blessed him with immese power. Narakasura also got a boon that he would face death only at the hands of his mother Bhumadevi. After acquiring such an immense power, Narakasura became more evil and started torturing all the people on this earth. He won all the kingdoms in this earth and then fought a war against Lord Indra to acquire the heavenly world also. Lord Indra and all his men ran to Lord krishna and pleaded for help. Lord Krishna asked his wife Sathyabhama, who was a reincarnation of Bhumadevi, to be his charioteer in the battle against Narakasura. During the battle Lord Krishna was hit by an arrow and fell unconscious. Then Sathyabama took the bow and killed Narakasura. After knowing that his mother herself had killed him, Narakasura realised his mistakes and prayed for mercy to Lord Krishna. He also requested that his death should be celebrated as Diwali with lights and fireworks so that everyone learns a moral from his death. Legend 2 : The Return of Lord Rama In Ramayana, Ravana an evil king from Srilanka took away Sitadevi when she was alone in the forest. Then Lord Rama, with the help of Veer Hanuman fought a battle against Ravana and his men to win Sita back.

Abstract: The war of the Mahabharata was as destructive, the mysterious for today's generation is also a matter of research even after years, and how that battle was fought without the latest technical resources? But it was Yogiraj Lord Yuyutsu, who can be called the father of modern SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT, fought a war on behalf of Pandavas and judiciously utilized available resources. Krishna's diplomacy that even a relatively small group of less warriors in this crusade demonstrated vitality in front of the more powerful warriors. Today in the war, armies want to avoid fighting face to face, because Massacre is fixed. Nowadays, there are battalions, regiments, squadrons in every country's army, in the same way, in the Mahabharata period; "Akshauhini" was assessed by the army. Akshauhini was called a complete unit of the army. It had four integral components, i.e. foot soldiers, the cavalry i.e. on Elephant, the warrior rider and the charioteer, the warrior rider that was called a smart army. Akshauhini used to be the measure of army in ancient India. This is the Sanskrit word. There are some differences in its number from different sources. According to the Mahabharata, there were 21,870 chariots, 21,870 elephants, 65,610 horsemen and 1,09,350 infantry soldiers.

  • 30. Inner Significance of Festivals
    30. Inner Significance Of Festivals Bharathiya festivals and holy days are designed to reveal the greatness and integrity of Indian culture. Failing to recognise the inner significance and power of this immemorial culture, the nation has drifted into a purposeless existence. All these festivals have a profound meaning and purpose. But no earnest effort is made to understand their inner meaning and deeper objectives. These holy days and festivals are intended to celebrate the birthdays of Avatars and saints and to mark the destruction of evil and wicked forces. The ancients observed these occasions to honour the memory of the great souls and to remember how the demoniac forces were vanquished. The advent of Sri Rama, the embodiment of Dharma, occurred on the Shuddha Navami in the Chaitra month. That day is observed as the sacred birthday of Rama. The Bahula Ashtami in the month of Sravana is observed as the sacred day on which Sri Krishna made his advent for the establishment of Dharma and propagating Dharma as the Gitacharya (the teacher of the Bhagavad Gita). Festivals mark the destruction of demonic forces The Navaratri festival, Shivarathri and Sankaranthi (festival dedicated to Sun God) are observed as memorable days marking the destruction of demonic forces by the Divine. Vijayadasami is the day when the evil-minded Ravana, who was well versed in all the sciences and was very powerful, was destroyed. The Suddha Paadyami in the Aasayuja month was the day in which the combined powers of the three goddesses, Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi, (Ichcha Shakthi, Kriya Sahkthi and Jnana Shakth) put an end to the evil forces represented by Mahishasura (the buffalo-headed demon).
