  • Proposal for Selection of New Higher Doctorate Academic Dress Scott Pilkington
Proposal for selection of new higher doctorate academic dress Scott Pilkington October 2019 Executive Summary AUT has recently had approved by CUAP the addition of two higher doctorates (DLitt and DSc) in addition to the suite of current named and other doctorates (PhD, DHSc, and EdD). There is the potential that additional higher doctorates may be created in future (e.g. LLD, DEng). As such, an opportunity is presented to develop new academic dress for these qualifications that sets them apart from the other doctorates being awarded by the university. Following here is an analysis of the historical context and review of other universities, and then the proposal for new doctoral academic dress (regalia) at AUT. Four designs have been proposed, with design D (p37) being recommended by the Graduate Research School for adoption. Costings have been obtained and are provided in appendix 4 (p28). The design recommended blends the styles used for the current doctorates and for the official party to facilitate a design that is sufficiently elevated to recognise the life work of a graduate, without competing with the finery worn by the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor. Burgon Society Annual, 2003, pp. 37–62 Academical Dress in the University of Westminster by Philip Goff The University of Westminster has its origins in The Polytechnic which was opened on 6 August 1838 at 309 Regent Street1. The first Chairman was Sir George Cayley, a landowner, inventor and gentleman scientist, who established the principle of heavier- than-air flight.2 A royal charter was granted on 23 August 1839 and, after an early visit made by Prince Albert, the name was changed in 1841 to The Royal Polytechnic Institution. In 1881 the Polytechnic was acquired by Quintin Hogg and, after rebuilding in 1912, was known as the Regent Street Poly. In 1970 it was renamed the Polytechnic of Central London, as one of thirty polytechnics awarding degrees of the Council for National Academic Awards. On 1 December 1992 the Polytechnic was rededicated as the University of Westminster at a service in Westminster Abbey. The academical dress for the new university was designed by Dr David Avery in consultation with Mr William (Bill) Keen, Managing Director of Ede and Ravenscroft, who as official suppliers to the CNAA had already supplied robes to the Polytechnic.

Fox and Dee Cook The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London, perhaps unexpectedly given its name, is a City livery company. In late 2007, the Society comprised, in ascending rank, Yeomen (424), Liverymen (1244), the Court of Assistants (23 plus 6 Assistants Emeritus), two Wardens and the Master (these last three being elected annually from amongst the Assistants). By its constitution, 85 per cent of the membership has to belong to the medical professions and includes a number of pharmacists, veterinary surgeons and dentists. The remainder come from various professional backgrounds and there are a few honorary Freemen. In 1815, almost two hundred years ago, the Society of Apothecaries began awarding its Licence to practise Medicine (LSA).1 Following the national reorganisation of the examining and licensing of doctors in 2007, the Society has retained that capability.

It has been accepted for inclusion in Transactions of the Burgon Society by an authorized administrator of New Prairie Press. For more information, please contact [email protected]. Transactions of the Burgon Society, 6 (2006), pages 77–125 Merging Traditions: Academic Dress and Nursing by Elizabeth Scott Introduction This paper will argue for an innovation in the field of academic dress, for nursing graduates. Various areas will be examined: the origin of the epitoge and its development in recent times; women and academia; changes to nursing education in the UK; parallels in custom between academia and the nursing profession; the significance of the custom of wearing caps (or not); and finally a proposal for a modern epitoge. Nursing has only very recently joined the echelons of higher education. Consequently academic dress was approved for, and allocated to, nursing graduates either pre-registration, or post-registration advanced level. The results were by no means standard between institutions. Ultimately, this paper proposes combining the tradition of academic dress with the tradition of the qualified nurse—the design of a shortened epitoge to wear in addition to any academic hood awarded, thus allowing the traditional nurse training badge to be affixed to the epitoge and worn as part of academic dress.
