Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (November 2011) Martial arts are extensive systems of codified practices and traditions of combat, practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental and spiritual development. The term martial art has become heavily associated with the fighting arts of eastern Asia, but was originally used in regard to the combat systems of Europe as early as the 1550s. An English fencing manual of 1639 used the term in reference specifically to the "Science and Art" of swordplay. The term is ultimately derived from Latin, martial arts being the "Arts of Mars," the Roman god of war.[1] Some martial arts are considered 'traditional' and tied to an ethnic, cultural or religious background, while others are modern systems developed either by a founder or an association. • An Ethnographic Study of British Savate Classes-3Pt
societies Article ‘A Very Unstatic Sport’: An Ethnographic Study of British Savate Classes James Victor Southwood 1 and Sara Delamont 2,* 1 Freelance Savate teacher, London SE1 8TG, UK; [email protected] 2 School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University, Cardiff CF10 3AT, UK * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 28 September 2018; Accepted: 24 November 2018; Published: 5 December 2018 Abstract: The empirical focus of this paper is a martial art, Savate, which has received little scholarly attention from social scientists in the English-speaking world. The disciplinary framework is based on symbolic interactionist approaches to bodies, embodiment and movement. The ethnographic methods employ the research agenda of John Urry as set out in his wider call for a mobile sociology. Here Urry’s research agenda is used as a strategy: a key goal for ethnographic researchers. The utility of Urry’s sociological work on mobilities for scholarship on combat sports is exemplified. Until now that approach has not been widely used in martial arts investigations or sports studies. The data are drawn from an ethnographic study conducted dialogically by an experienced Savate teacher and a sociologist who observes him teaching. Nine ways in which the ethnographic data on Savate classes are illuminated by the mobilities paradigm are explored so that previously unconsidered aspects of this martial art are better understood and the potential of Urry’s ideas for investigating other martial arts and sports is apparent. Keywords: ethnography; mobilities; teaching; mobile methods; Savate; assaut 1. Introduction The title ‘A very unstatic sport’ comes from the only British book about Savate (also known as boxe français or French kickboxing) written by two pioneers of the sport in the United Kingdom [1].

  • How Savate Turned Into a Sport Savate, Also Known As French Boxing Or French Foot Fighting, Is a Form of Martial Art from France
How Savate Turned into a Sport Savate, also known as French boxing or French foot fighting, is a form of martial art from France which combines kicking techniques with western boxing. Unlike, Muay Thai or Silat which allow the use of the knees, in Savate only foot kicks are allowed. It is probably the only kickboxing style where the fighters wear shoes. A male Savate fighter is called a savateur, while a female fighter is known as a savateuse. In the Paris Olympic Games of 1924, Savate was shown as a demonstration sport. In 2008, the International University Sports Federation recognized Savate as a sport. After this recognition, Savate become a sport under the University World Championships. Grouping and regrouping In 1965, French boxing teachers decided to establish the National Committee of French Boxing (Comite National de Boxe Francaise or CNBF). There were two groups among French boxing teachers, one the academic camp, comprising physical trainers headed b y Count Pierre Baruzy, and the other of white collar workers who were in favor of full-combat fighting in the ring. The two camps competed with each other throughout the 1970s. In 1973, the CNBF became Federation Nationale de Boxe Française (FNBF) and was controlled by the academic camp. The other group revolted and there was a split. A new federation called the Federation Nationale de Savante Boxe Française was created. The government, though, gave the right to offer teaching diplomas and championship titles to the academic group FNBF in 1975, which was renamed Fédération Française de Boxe Française, Savate et Disciplines Assimilées (FFBFS & DA).

  • Dear Martial Arts Practitioners for Years, Some of You Have Expressed the Desire to Visit France and Train at the Same Time. So
Dear Martial Arts Practitioners For years, some of you have expressed the desire to visit France and train at the same time. So we are pleased to invite you to the 25th annual Jeet Kune Do and Filipino martial arts summer camp on August 5 to August 9, 2019 in the absolute charming town of Arcachon, which is near Bordeaux, in France at a very low cost (see registration form for details). This year, our training site will take place in a completely renovated work out courtyard, in the middle of a beautiful setting. Our mornings will be devoted to Jun Fan Gung Fu and Jun Fan Kick Boxing, complemented with striking arts such as Savate and Muay Thai which were partially integrated into the art and philosophy of Jeet Kune Do. The training will focus on the strict effectiveness of self-defense techniques, whether for men, women or children. The afternoons will be free to enjoy the beach and surroundings dedicated to tourism. The late afternoon will be devoted to training in Filipino martial arts: Double sticks, single stick, stick and dagger, staff, Filipino Boxing (Panantukan) and Dumog. We will work on the Inosanto Lacoste system, but we will also see other Filipino systems with a focus on self-defense efficiency. Regarding accommodation, the Establishments "La Dune" are located on the Bassin d'Arcachon, in a beautiful site surrounded by pine trees, 3 minutes from the beach, near the famous Dune du Pyla. You can stay in full board (strongly recommended) half board or just sleep there. Meals are prepared on the spot by cooks who are used to designing meals for athletes (if you are vegetarian or allergic to anything, please specify on your registration form).

  • Struktura Stylů V Kung-Fu“ a Pokusím Se Rozdělit Jednotlivé Styly Čínského Bojového Umění Kung-Fu
ÚVOD Ve své bakalářské práci se budu zabývat problematikou na téma „Struktura stylů v kung-fu“ a pokusím se rozdělit jednotlivé styly čínského bojového umění kung-fu . Co mě k tomu vedlo? Byl to především nedostatek informací o obsáhlejším, systematickém a současně jasném rozdělení, pokud možno co největšího počtu stylů čínského kung-fu , v česky psané literatuře. Dalším důvodem je skutečnost, že již několik let toto bojové umění praktikuji, a přestože mne tato problematika zajímá a rád bych se v ní orientoval, neustále se mi těchto informací nedostává. Zároveň vím, že existuje mnoho lidí, kteří by si rádi udělali představu o tom, jak jednotlivé styly zařadit. A právě těm by přečtení mé práce mohlo obzvlášť pomoci.
