Next week: Sandringham vs Northern Blues 02 www.vfl .com.au ANZAC Day The most signifi cant day on our national calendar, April 25 is a date eternally etched into Australian and New Zealand history. This year it is even more so, with 2015 marking the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. What makes ANZAC Day so special to Australians and what it means can diff er for each individual. But we all acknowledge that it is a time to refl ect on both past and present confl icts, and pay our respects to the men and women who have served or are serving in them. We honour the memory of the fallen and recognise the sacrifi ces made by those currently serving in the Australian Defence Force. We take enormous pride in our own partners, family members, past and present, who have all courageously served our country. ANZAC Day gives us perspective. It reminds us to be thankful for the freedoms that our society enjoys today and to never take those freedoms for granted given what was sacrifi ced for them. This year ANZAC Day falls on a Saturday, three VFL and six TAC Cup games (including one match in Queensland) will be played on this day and we must never forget that being able to play football on ANZAC Day is a privilege. Across the two competitions clubs and supporters will join together for ANZAC Day services and tributes, remembering, honouring and thanking our service men and women. Nothing can compare to what our ANZAC’s endured and experienced, but the spirit and values they forged through that adversity on the battlefi eld all those years ago still live on with us today. We regularly here in sport words like courage, sacrifi ce, team work, endurance, initiative and respect being used. The meaning of these words will always have a far greater signifi cance when aligned to our Australian Defence Force and it is this special day that we should refl ect on such words when the meanings have a far greater impact and signifi cance that will never be equalled. The Calder Cannons know about sacrifi ce and courage all too well. A graduate from their program, Corporal Cameron Stewart Baird, was killed while on active duty in Afghanistan in 2013. In 2014 Corporal Baird was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration awarded for valour. In awarding the medal the off icial statement said, “Corporal Baird’s acts of valour and self-sacrifi ce regained the initiative and preserved the lives of his team members. His actions were of the highest order and in keeping with the fi nest traditions of the Australian Army and the Australian Defence Force.” In honour of Corporal Baird, the Cannons named their most courageous player award aft er him. At last year’s presentation night, Cannons defender James Latham became the inaugural winner of the Cameron Baird medal. This weekend we should remember that football is just a game. It’s a game that is a privilege to play, it’s a game that brings us together and it’s a game that we should all enjoy whilst also taking the time to remember that we have others to thank for being able to play this game.     TAC Cup Round 2 2 & 3 April 2016 $3.00 Season 2016 kicking into gear Wasn’t it great to have football back last weekend, both at AFL and TAC Cup level? While the next crop of future AFL talent was taking to the field in TAC Cup games throughout Victoria last weekend, it was a highlight of the Easter weekend to see eight draft ees debut in Round 1 of the AFL season – including 2015 Morrish Medal winner Clayton Oliver who claimed the first NAB AFL Rising Star nomination of the season aft er his 22-disposal debut for Melbourne. While the TAC Cup season started last weekend for the best U18 male talent across Victoria, last Monday saw the conclusion of a very successful Youth Girls Academy Challenge for the most promising U18 females across the state. Congratulations to the Dandenong Stingrays, who defeated the Sandringham Dragons in the finale to the month-long tournament. It is pleasing to see TAC support not only the next crop of elite U18 boys but also what will be the next crop of future female AFL footballers via the U18 Youth Girl Academies across eight regions. During the week we celebrated the launch of the Peter Jackson VFL and new VFL Women’s competition. With the launch of a national AFL women’s competition in 2017, it is exciting for AFL Victoria to launch the first VFL Women’s season this weekend. Also at the launch we looked back at the history of the TAC Cup competition, with last week signalling the beginning of its 25th season.

    COMMERCIAL SNAPSHOT SEASON 2017 FOOTBALL After a disappointing season in 2016, The Roosters started 2017 on the right foot by winning the Auckland 9’s. The tournament win further cemented the Club as one of the most successful teams in the League as they secured the only remaining trophy the Club had yet to win. At the end of the regular season and 26 rounds of football, the Roosters finished in 2nd place booking a place in the NRL Final Series. A loss in the Preliminary Final to the North Queensland Cowboys ended the Roosters season one game short of a Grand Final appearance. After a 15th place finish in 2016, the Roosters ultimately viewed 2017 as a successful season with room for improvement. With the Club securing the services of marquee players Cooper Cronk and James Tedesco, the Roosters are well placed to go one further in 2018.
