It is my honour to be involved in an event Ithat celebrates the close relationship between Australia and Vietnam especially with this year being the 40th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between our two countries. A 40 year partnership marked by friendship and cooperation and which continues to strengthen. This week Australians paused to remember the sacrifices made by their compatriots – from the beaches of Gallipoli to the fields of Northern France, from Tobruk to Kokoda and in Korea and Vietnam and in more recent theatres in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. Thursday’s Dawn Service was an opportunity to show our respect to the fallen, reflect on the tragedy of war and the selfless service of the many, many thousands of men and women who have served to defend and promote the institutions and values which are the foundation of our societies. Shaped like a rocket or a bomb, the 80-feet high reinforced concrete column has an attractive base surround and a cruciform pathway approach. This memorial lighthouse was also designed to be a practical navigational aid with provision for the installation of a powerful one million candlepower beam that would be visible up to ten miles out to sea. Part of the inscription on the dedication plate reads: ‘In honour and grateful memory of the Coastwatchers and of the loyal natives who assisted them in their heroic service behind enemy lines during the Second World War in providing intelligence vital to the conduct of Allied operations. Not only did the Coastwatchers transmit by means of teleradio from their jungle hideouts information which led to the sinking of numerous enemy warships but they were able to give timely warning of impending enemy air attacks. The contribution towards the Allied victory in the Pacific by a small body of men who constituted the Coastwatchers was out of all proportion to their numbers’.

It looks at the co-operation between Special Operations Australia, Special Operations Executive of Britain and the US Officeof Strategic Services and their actions with and against each other during the Pacific War. Based on hithertounused archival sources, it argues that the cancellation of 'Kingfisher' - and the failure to rescue the Sandakan prisoners - can be explained by the motivations, decisions and actions of particular British officers in the interplay of the wartime alliance. The politics of wartime alliances played out at both the level of grand strategy but also in interaction between officers within the planning headquarters in the Southwest Pacific Area, with severe implications for those most directly affected.     COMMERCIAL SNAPSHOT SEASON 2017 FOOTBALL After a disappointing season in 2016, The Roosters started 2017 on the right foot by winning the Auckland 9’s. The tournament win further cemented the Club as one of the most successful teams in the League as they secured the only remaining trophy the Club had yet to win. At the end of the regular season and 26 rounds of football, the Roosters finished in 2nd place booking a place in the NRL Final Series. A loss in the Preliminary Final to the North Queensland Cowboys ended the Roosters season one game short of a Grand Final appearance. After a 15th place finish in 2016, the Roosters ultimately viewed 2017 as a successful season with room for improvement. With the Club securing the services of marquee players Cooper Cronk and James Tedesco, the Roosters are well placed to go one further in 2018.     One of the Boys: The (Gendered) Performance of My Football Career Ms. Kasey Symons PhD Candidate 2019 The Institute for Sustainable Industries and Liveable Cities (ISILC), Victoria University, Australia. Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Abstract: This PhD via creative work comprises an exegesis (30%) and accompanying novel, Fan Fatale (70%), which seek to contribute a creative and considered representation of some women who are fans of elite male sports, Australian Rules football in particular. Fictional representations of Australian Rules football are rare. At the time of submission of this thesis, only three such works were found that are written by women aimed to an older readership. This project adds to this underrepresented space for women writing on, and contributing their experiences to, the culture of men’s football. The exegesis and novel creatively addresses the research question of how female fans relate to other women in the sports fan space through concepts of gender bias, performance, and social surveillance. Applying the lens of autoethnography as the primary methodology to examine these notions further allows a deeper, reflexive engagement with the research, to explore how damaging these performances can be for the relationships women can have to other women. In producing this exegesis and accompanying novel, this PhD thesis contributes a new and creative way to explore the gendered complications that surround the sports fan space for women. My novel, Fan Fatale, provides a narrative which raises questions about the complicit positions women can sometimes occupy in the name of fandom and conformity to expected gendered norms.
