Hosted by the Winston-Salem Bethabara Chapter of the Sons of The American Revolution (SAR), attendees included visitors, Compatriots from the Alamance Battleground, Bethabara, Nathanael Greene, Catawba Valley, and Yadkin Valley SAR Chapters as well as Daughters of The American Revolution (DAR) attendees from the Battle of Shallow Ford, Jonathan Hunt, Leonard's Creek, Colonel Joseph Winston, and Old North State Chapters.

Lewis www.carolana.com Note #1 Most who study the Battle of Kings Mountain are certainly aware that the Patriot leaders made a smart choice in leaving the “infantry” behind, and for only “able horsemen” to ride on. What they intuitively “know” – but seem to fail to thoroughly “embrace” is: Almost all “officers” had good horses. Therefore…. Many Patriot “Captains” had few men, sometimes no men, under their command during the actual battle at Kings Mountain. Most historians refuse to accept that at this important event, there were almost more Patriot officers engaged than militiamen, and that this is significant. Majors led as few as two (2) Captains, and many who had no men, or only one to five. It was rare, but some Captains did have more than ten men. Few had their original companies at full strength. It will soon be shown that the companies averaged only 5 men. 2 Note #2 Although the British seized Charlestown and many officers, and they once again devastated both the SC and NC militia at the Battle of Camden, the Patriots constantly kept rebuilding their militia in both states, and they retained their “semblance of order” by continuing the well-known “regiments” and recognized the leaders of all established militia units. Leaders of these well-established and well-known militia regiments agreed to “work with each other” for the common good of all. Ever since the start of the war, Captains attached themselves to other regiments when it was convenient.

On this the 13th day of November A.D. 1832, personally appeared in open court, before the justices of the County Court of pleas and quarter sessions for the said county of Surry, now setting, Christopher Eaton, formerly called Christopher Valentine, a resident of this (Surry) County in the State of North Carolina, aged seventy-six years, who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth, on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed June 7, 1832. That he enlisted in the army of the United States in the year 1777, with Joseph Philips [Joseph Phillips], a recruiting officer, at Richmond, then Surry Courthouse [now in Yadkin County] N. Carolina, and served in the [blank] regiment of the N. Carolina line, under the following named officers: viz. Col. John Armstrong, that we got to Richmond Va. in the company commanded by Captain Laban, (or Labourn), Lieut. forgotten – Ensign forgotten.     Exerpt from The Monuments at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, North Carolina, by Thomas E. Baker (1979) Joseph Winston Monument Joseph Winston Grave Jesse Franklin Grave Joseph L. Winston was born in Louisa County, Virginia, on June 17, 1746. As a young man he moved to Surry County, North Carolina. In 1775 he represented that county in the North Carolina Provincial Congress, and was appointed major of the Surry militia. This unit was part of the American force which destroyed the Loyalist army of Colonel Patrick Ferguson at King's Mountain in October 1780. For his conspicuous gallantry in this engagement, the North Carolina legislature voted to present Winston a sword. The Surry County contingent was part of the large force of North Carolina militia which served with Greene's army at Guilford Courthouse. In this engagement Winston's men were initially stationed on the far left of the American first line. The accurate fire from this segment of the patriot line inflicted heavy casualties on the oncoming British. As the center of this position gave way, Winston's men were compelled to fall back. Attaching themselves to "Lighthorse Harry" Lee's force of cavalry and riflemen, the "Surry County Boys" withdrew to a hilltop about one mile southeast of their first position. On this rise Lee's and Winston's men turned to face their pursuers — the First Battalion of Guards and the Hessian Regiment von Bose — in a desperate secondary battle, isolated from the main action of the day. These hardy Americans could not be budged from their hilltop position until General Greene ordered a general retreat.

The first edition of this book, published in 1959, was made pos- sible by the generous contribution of John D. Stockton of Winston- Salem. He expressed the wish that Dr. Adelaide L. Fries, late beloved friend of the Society and a Moravian historian herself, be recognized in the dedication. Acknowledgements are also due Archie K.
