Not only is the 26th the late trumpeter’s birthday but many of his most enduring works were New York@Night recorded during this month, including the Charlie Parker All-Stars (1948); the 4 Miles Davis-Tadd Dameron Quintet’s run in Paris (1949), most of the Workin’, Steamin’ and Relaxin’ triumvirate by the quintet with John Coltrane (1956), Miles Interview: Vince Giordano Ahead and At Carnegie Hall, both with the Gil Evans Orchestra (1957 and 1961 6 by Michael Hittman respectively); and the bulk of Miles in the Sky (1968). Now in May 2008, another chapter to the Miles Legacy will be written with an ambitious concert at Town Artist Feature: George Garzone Hall May 9th, “Miles From India”. A companion concert to a just-released album 7 by Matthew Miller of the same name, the concert brings together musicians who played with the legend throughout his career as well as a number of classical Indian musicians for Label Spotlight: Les Disques Victo what is billed as a “cross-cultural summit meeting”. Our Encore this month, 8 by Kurt Gottschalk guitarist Pete Cosey, is participating in what is sure to be a monumental event. But, as is typical for New York, the happenings don’t stop happening there. Hancock, 74, an American pianist, bandleader and composer, says he has performed more times in Japan than in his hometown of Chicago during his half century in music. He will headline an all-star concert at Osaka Castle Park, in a line-up that includes Wayne Shorter, Kenny Garrett, Terumasa Hino, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gregory Porter, Roy Hargrove, Marcus Miller, Esperanza Spalding, Earl Klugh and John Scofield. The concert will be streamed live on the Jazz Day website (11am GMT) and will also be shown in London on big screens at Ronnie Scott's club in London. Hancock, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, says the event is an opportunity to show appreciation for Japanese jazz fans, who have been among the world's greatest supporters of the music. He first performed in Japan with Miles Davis' quintet in 1964, and has toured there with his own electric and acoustic groups for decades. Esperanza Spalding will play at the special 2014 International Jazz Day concert "Japanese audiences are very loyal," Hancock told AP. "In Japan, art is really placed on a high level, and jazz is really honoured and accepted as being a fine music – much more in comparison to the States." Osaka played a leading role in the early days of jazz in Japan.

1 of 38 Jazz Rock Fusion Surviving Four Decades and Counting… By, Rick Calic www.jazzrockworld.com March 2006 Writing an article about Jazz Rock Fusion these days might seem as pointless as debating the benefits of Hi-Fi equipment with vacuum tubes vs. transistors to someone that uses an iPod. The only people that would care are older folks who even remember tubes and dedicated enthusiasts. On the other hand, while Jazz Rock Fusion might be older or seem equally pointless to many reading this article, there remains a large but scattered segment of the world’s population that sees the genre as a vibrant and legitimate art form. Sadly though, the musical perspective regarding Jazz Rock Fusion was narrow from the beginning and will probably always be that way. Jazz Rock Fusion, in terms of the entire world of music, constitutes just a tiny fraction of interest. Yet, if we accept this as fact, which most fans, musicians and certainly “big business” does, the generation of any interest at all is meritorious. In order to discuss the music with integrity, a ground rule needs to be established. This ground rule is required due to the unsolved, long lasting, and ongoing mysteries of the music and its unique identity. Mysteries such as: What is Jazz Rock Fusion? Who started Jazz Rock Fusion? What should it be called? And finally, with no major media support why is there still a market? So, what are the answers you ask? Quite simply these mysteries will remain mysteries. Answering the questions definitively will end up as trivial as the facts regarding the creation and development of the gut bucket.

LICORICE STICK: SOME THOUGHTS ON THE CLARINET IN JAZZ by Ian Muldoon* _____________________________________________________ n 1979 I was invited to present a jazz programme on 2ARM-FM, a community radio station based on the campus of University of New England, Armidale. The I station manager was Karen (Kaz) Harris, who gave me free reign over the content of my programme consistent with the broadcasting act. It was a very fine community radio station which served the (musically and culturally diverse and well educated) community well. After a time Kaz asked whether I’d be interested in making a series of 30-minute radio programmes on Australian jazz using a contemporary as opposed to historical approach. I said I was willing but funds would restrict my efforts to Sydney to which she replied, “Well something is way better than nothing, and we have very little at our station relevant to the present scene regarding Australian jazz.” I was loaned a professional recorder and travelled to Sydney at a time when Terumasa Hino, John Scofield and Adam Nussbaum were among the international musicians appearing in Sydney at that time. I interviewed Bob Barnard, Judy Bailey, Dick Hughes, Merv Acheson and others but the musician that gave me an unforgettable musical moment was John McCarthy.
