Nowadays, the world of jazz includes—first and foremost—a huge pool of incredibly gifted artists. Plus, there are wildly creative music labels, intelligent industry innovators, unique festi- vals, great record stores, engaging radio stations and smartly managed organizations. They all help this art form to evolve, as it continues to be an integral aspect of global culture. This month’s cover story shines a spotlight on all that and more. Several months ago, the DownBeat staff met to discuss the various ways we could celebrate the magazine’s 80th anniversary. Longtime readers will recall that our July 2009 issue was a 75th anniversary edition that highlighted the magazine’s remarkable past, compiling archival gems from various decades in Esperanza Spalding our history. Five years later, we wanted to do something differ- ent. We didn’t want to look back at the past. We want to focus on the present and the future. Beginning on page 28, you’ll find our detailed list of “The 80 Coolest Things in Jazz Today.” Please keep in mind that although we numbered those 80 items, we did not rank them. So, for example, we don’t think that Gerald Clayton (No. 18) is any more or less cool than Hiromi (No. 59) or Omar Sosa (No. 62). We hold them all in equally high esteem. Our intent was to share with our readers 80 amazing JACK VARTOOGIAN/FRONTROWPHOTOS people, places and things that make jazz the greatest art form in the world. As we were compiling ideas for the list (and enjoying the debates about which items should be included), we asked artists, journalists, in- dustry leaders and our Facebook friends to tell us what they thought was the coolest thing in jazz. The input from all those parties was extremely helpful, often enlightening, and occasionally profane. It was difficult to narrow the list down to 80 items. After all, this office receives hundreds of jazz CDs every month. Selecting only a few dozen artists to include was a challenge. We definitely wanted to tip our hat to exciting young artists like bass- ist-vocalist Esperanza Spalding and singer Cécile McLorin Salvant, but we also wanted to give a big thanks to the living masters of this art form— titans who have paved the way for generations of jazz artists. Therefore, we started the list with 10 veterans who are among the most important practitioners in this art form’s history. We concluded the list with a look toward the future. We hope that our “80 Coolest” list will serve as a shopping guide, a keepsake and a conversation-starter. Dig in. His conclusion is pithy: “You can’t kill jazz. It will always exist.” Who’s going to disagree with Sonny Rollins? DB 8 DOWNBEAT JULY 2014 Chords Discords Altruistic José Diaz Educator What a wonderful decision to induct José Diaz into the DownBeat Jazz Education Hall of Fame (Student Music Awards, June). His reputation as a world-class educator is well known in the profession of jazz education. Despite never having had the pleasure of his acquaintance, I would only hope my own goals in education remain as altruis- tic as his. TOM SMITH NINGBO, CHINA Emotional Generator A DownBeat critic strikes again. This time, it’s a gentleman named Alain Drouot. With élan and great generosity, he gave 2½ stars to the splendid George Mraz/David Hazeltine Trio’s new album Your Story. That rating pushed me to buy the record immediately from the iTunes store, and I was right because that record is great. What leaves me incredulous is Drouot stating that the music “fails to generate emotions.” To him, probably! This is pretentious and wrong.     BIO LOU DONALDSON --------------------------------------- "My first impulse is always to describe Lou Donaldson as the greatest alto saxophonist in the world." -- Will Friedwald, New York Sun Jazz critics agree that “Sweet Poppa Lou” Donaldson is one of the greatest alto saxophonists of all time. He began his career as a bandleader with Blue Note Records in 1952 and, already at age 25, he had found his sound, though it would continue to sweeten over the years -- earning him his famed nickname -- “Sweet Poppa Lou.” He made a series of classic records for Blue Note in the 50’s, and takes pride in having showcased many musicians who made their first records as sidemen for him: Horace Silver, Clifford Brown, Grant Green, Blue Mitchell, Donald Byrd, Horace Parlan, and others. After also making some excellent recordings for Cadet and Argo Records in the early 60s, Lou’s return to Blue Note in 1967 was marked by one of his most famous recordings, Alligator Bogaloo. Lou was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Letters by North Carolina A & T University and a scholarship was established in his name that is awarded to the most gifted jazz musician at North Carolina A & T University each year. He was inducted into the International Jazz Hall of Fame, is an NEA Jazz Master – our nation’s highest award bestowed upon jazz artists, and is the recipient of countless other honors and awards for his outstanding contributions to jazz, America’s “classical music.” Lou was born in Badin, North Carolina on November 1, 1926 -- the second of 4 children born to father Andrew, a minister and graduate of Livingstone College, and mother, Lucy, graduate of Cheney University who was a teacher, music director and concert pianist who recognized Lou’s expert ear for music and introduced him to the clarinet.

    ERIC CLAPTON BIOGRAFIA Eric Patrick Clapton nasceu em 30/03/1945 em Ripley, Inglaterra. Ganhou a sua primeira guitarra aos 13 anos e se interessou pelo Blues americano de artistas como Robert Johnson e Muddy Waters. Apelidado de Slowhand, é considerado um dos melhores guitarristas do mundo. O reconhecimento de Clapton só começou quando entrou no “Yardbirds”, banda inglesa de grande influência que teve o mérito de reunir três dos maiores guitarristas de todos os tempos em sua formação: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck e Jimmy Page. Apesar do sucesso que o grupo fazia, Clapton não admitia abandonar o Blues e, em sua opinião, o Yardbirds estava seguindo uma direção muito pop. Sai do grupo em 1965, quando John Mayall o convida a juntar-se à sua banda, os “Blues Breakers”. Gravam o álbum “Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton”, mas o relacionamento com Mayall não era dos melhores e Clapton deixa o grupo pouco tempo depois. Em 1966, forma os “Cream” com o baixista Jack Bruce e o baterista Ginger Baker. Com a gravação de 4 álbuns (“Fresh Cream”, “Disraeli Gears”, “Wheels Of Fire” e “Goodbye”) e muitos shows em terras norte americanas, os Cream atingiram enorme sucesso e Eric Clapton já era tido como um dos melhores guitarristas da história. A banda separa-se no fim de 1968 devido ao distanciamento entre os membros. Neste mesmo ano, Clapton a convite de seu amigo George Harisson, toca na faixa “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” do White Album dos Beatles. Forma os “Blind Faith” em 1969 com Steve Winwood, Ginger Baker e Rick Grech, que durou por pouco tempo, lançando apenas um album.

    GRADUATION 2015 Presentation speech for Bernie Marsden for the honorary degree of Master of Arts of the University honoris causa Chancellor, over the centuries, Buckingham has been the birth place of many famous people. The list is remarkably wide ranging and includes the actress Gillian Blake, the theologian William Goode, the cricketer Wyndham Hazleton, the politician Francis Ingoldsby, the architect George Gilbert Scott and the speed skater John Tipper. Today, however, there can be little doubt that the best known of all is our honorand - the rock and blues singer and guitarist, Bernie Marsden. To most people in Buckingham, Bernie Marsden is synonymous with Whitesnake, the hard rock band he joined in 1978, playing on eight albums, from Snakebite to Saints and Sinners. He wrote or co-wrote many of the group’s hit songs, such as Here I Go Again. Following his departure from Whitesnake, he formed a new band which later became Bernie Marsden’s Alaska, which released two rock albums, Heart of the Storm and The Pack. More recently, he has been involved in some unusual projects, notably two engagements at the National Theatre for Nickolas Hytner’s productions of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale and Henry V. In 2012, he performed at the premier of Rock of Ages, starring Tom Cruise and featuring the Whitesnake hit ‘Here I Go again on my Own.’ He has also produced a blues documentary, A Day in the Delta. Bernie Marsden’s new album, ‘Shine’ was released in August 2014, reaching the number 1 spot on the iTunes blues chart.
