Art lovers will have a chance to add to their collection this weekend. The curling paintings created during the Tim Hortons Brier by artist Rachel Nickerson will go on auction Saturday between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the Brier Patch. Another auction will be held Sunday between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Also up for auction are 10 prints. The money will be used by the Canadian Curling Association to enhance the sport in Canada. Nickerson has spent the week creating eight paintings in eight days. She calls the work “a legacy collection.” Each evening Nickerson and several members of the Canadian Curling Asso- ciation sifted through photographs taken during the day of action on the ice and events in the crowd. Together they selected one image was transformed into a painting. “We go through the images and see what grabs everyone’s attention and what they feel is the highlight of that day,” Nickerson said in an interview. “In the end you hope to have this really cool visual of what the highlights were through the whole tournament.” Two depictions, done in bright, vibrant colours, are a salute to Alberta curl- ing history. One is the Legends of Northern Alberta which has images of Brier champions Matt Baldwin, Hec Gervais, , Randy Ferbey, Kevin Martin and Kevin Koe. The other is a back view of the three-time world champion Ferbey rink look- ing at the Brier Tankard. This portrait is autographed by the team. As usual, it’s the colourful fans the make the Tim Hortons Brier complete, such as this Alberta booster. The vultures began circling around Kevin Martin’s rink even when the carcass was still moving. The veteran Alberta skip didn’t do anything to delay the post mortem when he declared his rink’s playoff hopes were dead on Tuesday. Martin’s struggles at this week’s Tim Hortons Brier has led to plenty of speculation about the future of his team of John Morris, Marc Kennedy and Ben Hebert. Martin gave one his typical shrugs and surprised looks when asked if his performance this week changes his immediate future plans. “Not at all,” said the former world champion and Olympic gold medallist. “I can put loses in the rear view mirror real easy.” After surviving on life support the first part of the week Mar- tin’s team got its heart pumping and put together an impres- sive string of victories to show reports of their early demise had been greatly exaggerated. The jury is still out on whether this week was an aberration or a glimpse of what the future holds. “We know how to win,” said Kennedy, the veteran second. “We know what it takes. We know you can have an off week. “I think it’s been a little bit blown out of portion how nega- tive things have been.” What does the future hold for the Martin Four after this Olympic cycle?
