Jones blanked the sixth but nosed a hit in the back ring in the seventh to settle for a tying single. In the eighth, with Manitoba angling for a big theft, Nedohin executed a precise kill, hitting into a pocket of two Manitoba rocks in the four-foot after Jones had rubbed a guard with her last. Jones then blanked the ninth and an Officer freeze appeared to have a winning deuce set up in the 10th until Nedohin negotiated a path past a couple of guards for a double-kill. Jones then bur- ied perfectly on the button, Nedohin was forced to draw to it leaving her opponent locked in for a tie, with a hail-Mary raise for the win which didn’t come off. Alberta third jumps for joy when her rock was deemed the counter by the umpire. Continued on Page 4

Reaction

Players and fans alike have had a mixed reaction to the system. Broadcasters also enjoy it as it produces one more game than the single elimination format.[3] Considering the format is expanding to more curling events and more sports and games, it is reasonable to say its popularity and acceptance is increasing. Gold No. 5 — Prince George in 2000 was a milestone year for the Scott Tournament of Hearts. SPONSOR The company had changed hands a couple of times to American interests. I had been part of the team trying to defend the sponsorship in each case, trying to explain curling to Americans who had no idea what the sport was about. Joseph Kruger, new owner of the company, sent Don Cayouette and his wife Elizabeth to Prince George to access the Scott Tournament of Hearts and its future. It was a pretty scary time for all of us who so loved this event. Prince George rolled out the red carpet and captivated Don and his wife. An unforgettable memory Introducing myPAL was Vic Rauter reading a message from Sandra Schmirler who was supposed to have been in Prince George as a CBC commentator but was, instead, in hospital in Regina. In her own words, she reminded all of us that curling “was just a game”. Sandra passed away on March 2. Attendance that year was 58,784 and the champion was B.C.’s . This was also the beginning of the Sandra Schmirler Foundation — founded by Sandra’s teammates, family and friends with help from the CCA and Scott Paper. Six-time STOH participant, , was the first chair and her leadership would go on to be recognized many times over, most recently in her appointment as CEO of Own the Podium. No. 3 — It was 2005. There is no place in Canada like Newfoundland. It’s some place that every Canadian needs to put on his/her bucket list. On my first visit, I had rented a car but got lost (not an unusual occurrence for me) and had circled the block several times looking for my destination. A cabbie stopped me and asked where I was going and then had me follow him to my destination. No charge. Just a friendly wave. As the oldest and most easterly city in North America, this is where heritage lives. Melded with culture, history, and personality, St. John’s has survived two World Wars, five centuries, countless hardships and triumphs. It’s become a rare, old city full of character, experience and charisma, with a contemporary, sophisticated edge. Premier Danny Williams said: “It takes a lot to get you here, but once you come you will always return.” Attendance that year was 72.999 and our winner was Jennifer Jones and her team from Manitoba. No. 2 — London in 2006 was the celebration of our 25th year of sponsorship by Scott/Kru- ger and what a celebration it was! We brought in Randy Bachman for a special reception and he was terrific. We had an unparalleled Victory Banquet. This was also a very special year for me as I was presented with the Builder’s Award (a total surprise) and given an amazing ring which I have not taken off my finger since the day it was presented to me by two of the biggest believers in the Scott Tournament of Hearts – John McClelland and Stephen Blythe. It also was a special time personally as my sister Dawn, who was my teammate in our two Canadian championship wins, joined mom and me in London. She was to pass away less than a month later. Attendance that year was 105,065 and the champion was B.C.’s Kelly Scott. No. 1 — Victoria is an absolutely beautiful city with old English charm. We stayed at the Empress which is iconic and even has its own ghosts that occasionally wander through the hallways (we encountered one in the elevator). The weather was incredible — unseasonably warm. We had an amazing committee chaired by Chris Atchison. My mom attended with me and this was to be her last Scotties. Her long-time CCA lady friends who attend the Scotties nearly every year took her under their wings. She was catered to by two wonderful Scotties volunteers, Linda and Terry Bolton, and my long-time friend Cathy Stephenson who was to “retire” alongside me in 2010. Attendance that year was 70,218 and the winners was, once again, Jennifer Jones and Team Canada. Postscript: I have only missed one Scotties in the 31-year history of the event. I would like to thank my many friends who hosted that wonderful party in the Soo in 2010. I can’t thank you enough for your generosity and for the wonderful send-off you gave me. I am forever grateful. I would also like to thank the CCA, Warren Hansen and Greg Stremlaw, for allowing me to continue to be involved with the Scotties as media co-ordinator. I am thrilled to be back on the bench, thrilled to be involved once again with TSN, my wonderful media friends, officials, volunteers, and curlers. It is a true privilege to be part of the CCA team.
