This paper analyses the contents and the style of the Bullettino di bibliografia e di storia delle scienze matematiche e fisiche (1868–1887), the first journal entirely devoted to the history of mathematics. It is argued that its innovative and controversial methodological approach cannot be properly understood without considering the cultural conditions in which the journal was conceived and realized. The style of the Bullettino was far from being the mere outcome of the eccentric personality of its editor, Prince Baldassarre Boncompagni. Rather, it reflected in many ways, at the level of historiography of science, the struggle of the official Roman Catholic culture against the growing secularization of knowledge and society. While history of mathematics was a well-established discipline by the mid-nineteenth century, no periodical which was entirely devoted to such a discipline existed until 1868. -

Paul Mansion and the scientific approach of randomness 1 Laurent Mazliak Abstract The present paper studies how the Belgian mathematician Paul Mansion became interested in probability theory. The Belgian mathematical environment, in which probability was present more than in many other countries at the same time appears to have been favorable but also the fact that Mansion, a declared and militant Catholic, found in probability a source of reflection about determinism and randomness in the context of the “modernist crisis” in the Church. Mansion’s activity developed on the background of the scholar wars and the foundation of Catholic institutions such as the Institute for philosophy in Louvain, of the consolidation of mathematical education in Belgium as well as of a new interest for probabilistic results in science. -

His initial focus on Eugène Charles Catalan (1814–1894) broadened to 19th century mathematics in Belgium and France, and extended to the history of geometric probability. A long-term interest was the gauging of wine barrels, a topic neglected for two centuries. The present personal tribute derives from a collaboration on some seven papers, and an intensive correspondence of over 20 years. It sets the work on geometric probability and particularly barrel-gauging in a self-contained context, with additional background from the correspondence. This tribute will be electronically accessible on Google under the above title after publication. Biography François Jongmans (FJ in the following) was born in Liège, a centre of French culture in Belgium, on 7 July 1921. At the time of his death at Chambéry, France, on the 23 May 2014, he was Professeur Ordinaire Émérite, Faculté des Sciences, Université de Liège, from which he had officially retired in 1988, although he dated his de facto retirement to 1986. From the time of his retirement he contributed much to the history of science, relating in particular to mathematics in Belgium and France, and even more specifically through our collaboration to the history of probability. -
