We use a social scientific method for measuring religion around the world; namely, self-identification. If a person calls herself a Christian, then she is a Christian. We measure Christians primarily by denominational affiliation in every country of the world and these data are housed in the World Christian Database. Ethnolinguistic people groups are distinct homogeneous ethnic or racial groups within a single country, speaking its own language (one single mother tongue). These dossiers measure gospel access (also known as “evangelization”) by a number of variables, including but not limited to, evangelistic crusades, church planting, personal witnessing, sharing on social media, etc. These dossiers also utilize data from the United Nations relat- ed to socio-economic, development, and gender-justice related issues. The term “Chittagong” refers simultaneously to the division, district, and capital city of the district. The Chittagong Division has an area of nearly 34,000 km2 bounded by Dhaka and Sylhet divisions on the north, the Bay of Bengal, and Arakan (Myanmar) on the south, Mizoram, Tripura states of India and Chin state of Myanmar on the east, Dhaka and Barisal Dhaka, Bangladesh. divisions on the west. Christians in Bangladesh form a very small minority and consist mostly of former low-caste Hindu peasants and members of certain tribes, including the the Khasi, Garo, Oraon Sadri, Santal, Kurukh, Chakma, Mahili, and Bawm. The tribes have been far more receptive to Christianity than the Bengalis, upon whom it has had little influence. Bangladesh has the fourth largest population of Muslims in the world, who consti- tute 89% of the country’s total population. Bangladesh has experienced Islamic terrorist attacks in recent years. On balance, it is a combination of the premature and preemptive secularization attempts in the formation of Bangladesh as an independent nation with the abundance of Western NGOs working in the country in the subsequent decades that helped to incite politico-religious violence. Following a general religious trend, forms of Islam that are regarded from within to be syncretistic are typically associated with rural Bangladesh and are based in its origin there among agriculturalist Sufis. The more polit- icized, doctrinally, and juristically conservative expressions of Islam are more common in urban areas. Cross-cultural workers seek to bring about holistic transformation of Muslim com- munities in Chittagong, but in doing so ultimately alter the experience of women in the district. Some scholars have demonstrated how village women are able to indeed negoti- ate between the secular NGO and Islamist agendas to leverage them to procure more rights for themselves, pointing to a general BANGLADESH QUICK FACTS POPULATION (2020): 169,775,000 trend toward increased autonomy. The governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar quickly agreed to a rapid repatriation process shortly after. Their agreement came up against interna- tional opposition by the Rohingya currently in refugee camps. In the meantime, Cox’s Bazar has become a semi-permanent home of more than one million refugees. With the presence of one of the largest refugee camps in world on their doorstep, and the ensuing pressures therefore exerted on the local population in Chittagong, managing local sentiments toward the camps is vitally important. The creation of security posts in Ukhia and Taknaf areas designed to monitor the Rohingya who move out of the camps has meant that local residents now have to regularly carry and show their photo identity for security personnel. One major obstacle to Christianity in the region is its association with colonialism. In addition, some scholars and government officials see Christianity as preying on the poor, converting people with lower socio-economic backgrounds because only the “poor” among Bangladesh’s people could possibly be persuaded by Christianity. Christian work- ers among the village peoples of Chittagong (whether in the Hill Tracts or elsewhere) have an immense opportunity to undermine the dehumanizing elements of these “tribal history” campaigns by honoring and celebrating the diverse peoples of this region as living cultures and not relics of the past in need of preservation. It seems one of the major differences between the effects of Islam on these peoples and the potential effect of Christianity is in its goal not merely to pre- serve cultures but to cele- brate them and invite them into the family of God as their people, and not as part of an amalgamation of reli- gious, political, and national values. In April 2018, the government changed the official anglicization of these Chittagongs to “Chattogram” for consistency with contemporary scholar- ship on this region. Nevertheless, this dossier will maintain the former spelling convention. The Chittagong Division has an area of nearly 34,000 km2 bounded by Dhaka and Sylhet divisions on the north, the Bay of Bengal and Arakan (Myanmar) on the south, Mizoram, Tripura states of India and Chin state of Myanmar on the east, Dhaka and Barisal divisions on the west. Introduction Mymensingh Kewatkhali Bridge is part of the Dhaka-Mymensingh-India border corridor, which is strategically important for both regional and local connectivity. Three land ports have been developed along the Indian border in Mymensingh Division, namely Nakugaon Land port in Sherpur district, Gobrakura Land Port and Haluaghat Land Port in Mymensingh District. Traffic from the three land ports must cross Old Brahmaputra River at Mymensingh City in order to reach Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh. As with other land ports on the northern border with India, the main import items are coal, lime stone, boulder, stone, glass sand, fruits and raw hides. Export items are food and beverage items, plastic goods and bricks. Given the proximity to the Indian border (around 60-80 km from Mymensingh to the three land ports), the road passing through Mymensingh serves international trade by carrying the major import/export items from/to India. The improved crossing at Mymensingh will help facilitate cross-border trade with northeast India. On the other hand, the Mymensingh Kewatkhali bridge will provide crossing over the Old Brahmaputra River to connect the landlocked north central and northeast Bangladesh with Dhaka.

Sunni Muslims constitute around 88 percent of the population and Buddhists and Christians make up the remainder of the religious minorities. The Hindu minority in Bangladesh has progressively diminished since partition in 1947 from approximately 25 percent of the population to its current 10 percent (US Department of State 2006, International Religious Freedom Report for 2006 – Bangladesh, 15 September – Attachment 1). 2. How are religious minorities, notably Hindus, treated in Bangladesh? In general, minorities in Bangladesh have been consistently mistreated by the government and Islamist extremists. Specific discrimination against the Hindu minority intensified immediately following the 2001 national elections when the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) gained victory with its four-party coalition government, including two Islamic parties.

The disaster killed an estimated 160 persons, including 115 persons in Rangamati alone. According to the Chittagong Divisional Health Office Control Room Report, a total of 187 injured persons were admitted in local level hospitals. Approximately 85% of patients were admitted in Rangamati. While landslide related disaster occurs nearly every year, the second highest death toll of 127 deceased persons was recorded in 2007 [Disaster Forum, June 2017]. Monsoon rains caused severe flooding in low-lying areas to significantly damage road and communication infrastructure. Flood water rendered remote communities in Bandarban, Chittagong, and Rangamati districts were inaccessible by road. On June 14th, mudslides in southeast Bangladesh claimed additional lives in Cox's Bazaar and Khagrachari districts to further damage homes and infrastructure.

    CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Main Report Chapter 1 Introduction Main Report CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the Study The Peoples Republic of Bangladesh has a population of 123 million (as of June 1996) and a per capita GDP (Fiscal Year 1994/1995) of US$ 235.00. Of the 48 nations categorized as LLDC, Bangladesh is the most heavily populated. Even after gaining independence, the nation repeatedly suffers from floods, cyclones, etc.; 1/3 of the nation is inundated every year. Shortage in almost all sectors (e.g. development funds, infrastructure, human resources, natural resources, etc.) also leaves both urban and rural regions very underdeveloped. The supply of safe drinking water is an issue of significant importance to Bangladesh. Since its independence, the majority of the population use surface water (rivers, ponds, etc.) leading to rampancy in water-borne diseases. The combined efforts of UNICEF, WHO, donor countries and the government resulted in the construction of wells. At present, 95% of the national population depend on groundwater for their drinking water supply, consequently leading to the decline in the mortality rate caused by contagious diseases. This condition, however, was reversed in 1990 by problems concerning contamination brought about by high levels of arsenic detected in groundwater resources. Groundwater contamination by high arsenic levels was officially announced in 1993. In 1994, this was confirmed in the northwestern province of Nawabganji where arsenic poisoning was detected. In the province of Bengal, in the western region of the neighboring nation, India, groundwater contamination due to high arsenic levels has been a problem since the 1980s.

    Carmen Brandt Why Dots and Dashes Matter Writing Bengali in Roman Script A friend recently sent me a photo of an Indian restaurant called “Vagina Tandoori” and asked for my ‘official statement’ as a scholar of South Asian studies. After we had had a good laugh – as many other Internet users had before us – I was not shy of providing an answer, as I explained the potential reason behind this awkward name: the restaurant owners could be of Bengali origin and might have transcribed the Bengali term ভািগনা/bhāginā1 “nephew”2, the way they thought it should be written in Roman script. I have come across this transcription several times in Bangladesh. Beyond that, a male colleague of mine regularly gets emails from his “vagina”, i.e. from a friend in Bangla- desh who is much younger to him and refers to himself as his “nephew”. Even though the awkward restaurant name turned out to be a hoax,3 the writing of South Asian lan- guages – especially Bengali – in Roman script is, nonetheless, often a challenge. Hence, this essay reflects on these challenges, discusses in general why South Asian languages are often written in Roman script, and which options might be best to do so. The Roman Script – a Symbol of Colonial Conquest As I have already discussed in detail (Brandt 2020), in South Asia, the Roman script is often perceived as a symbol of foreign domination in past and present.
