In July we debuted our new logo, followed by the release of our new website. The refreshed look of both media mirror the transformation of our organization from a small trade association to its present role as a powerful voice in Trenton and the national stage. Updating our public image will only further strengthen our association as we continue to advocate for our industry and produce high quality boat shows that provide opportunities for our members to thrive. Speaking of boat shows, this September marks the 4th Annual fall Jersey Shore Boat Sale and Expo at First Energy Park, Home of the Lakewood BlueClaws. The $2 admission gives attendees the opportunity to board a plethora of new and pre-owned boats, to check out the latest marine accessories and services, and to entertain children with plenty of boating related activities. Our inaugural New Jersey Boat Sale and Expo at the New Jersey Convention & Expo Center in Edison this spring was a rousing success, with nearly 7,000 people in attendance at the show. The MTA/NJ was proud to bring the boats back to central New Jersey in 2012 and we look forward to doing it again February 21st - 24th, 2013. FINAL PROOF For our members, the MTA/NJ biennial conference returns on March 14, 2013. We have an informative slate of topics planned in our convenient and accessible one-day format. Finally, while you are perusing this directory, I would like you to keep our members in mind every time you buy parts or services for your boat. If you are a consumer, look for the MTA/NJ logo when you fill your tank, have your boat power-washed or are shopping for your next boating accessory. If you are a marine retailer, the next time you are chatting with a fellow marine business, ask if they are a member of the MTA/NJ. Increased membership is the key ingredient for the MTA/NJ’s success and growth, which leads to increased support for recreational marine businesses and their customers. You have already made the first step by picking up this directory and taking the time to read my message. Thank you, Kersten Roehsler MTA/NJ President Directory Updates at mtanj.org 3 About The Marine Trades Association of New Jersey Established in 1972, the Marine Trades Association of New Jersey (MTA/NJ) is a non-profit trade organization dedicated to advancing, promoting and protecting the recreational marine industry and waterways in New Jersey. The MTA/NJ is dedicated to promoting the interests of the industry as a whole for the benefit of its individual members and the consumers whom they serve. The MTA/NJ maintains a year round fully staffed office representing the interests of the industry and providing assistance and information to members, marine businesses and the boating public. The MTA/NJ staff is available to assist marine businesses and boaters with questions and to provide guidance in solving boating and marine-related problems. The MTA/NJ has an aggressive approach to legislative issues, lobbying and governmental relations through its lobbyist from State House Strategies in Trenton. The MTA/NJ is very active in the movement, opposition and/or consideration of many pieces of legislation involving the recreational boating industry. The MTA/NJ meets frequently with legislators from all districts to raise awareness and support of the recreational boating industry and fight for the rights of its members and marine businesses helping them to grow and prosper in the State of NJ. The MTA/NJ spends a significant amount of time and resources promoting the boating industry and member businesses to ensure that boating continues to grow. This is done through strategic advertising, marketing, promotions, special events and annual campaigns designed to get more people out on the water and into boating. The MTA/NJ owns and produces two new boat shows, the Jersey Shore Boat Sale & Expo held at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood in September and the New Jersey Boat Sale & Expo held at the New Jersey Convention & Exposition Center in Edison in February. The MTA/NJ is committed to making sure that there are affordable and successful local boat shows to support New Jersey’s boat dealer members asFINAL well as all those that provide PROOF related goods and services. These shows are the result of that commitment and will not only help dealers and members sell their products and services but will help to strengthen the Association and the entire industry. More information about these events can be found at JerseyBoatExpo.com. The MTA/NJ offers a variety of educational seminars and workshops designed to help marine business owners meet the challenges and opportunities facing their business and the industry. • Stern-Mounted Rudder (Edited from Wikipedia)
Stern-Mounted Rudder (Edited from Wikipedia) SUMMARY A rudder is a primary control surface used to steer a ship, boat, submarine, hovercraft, aircraft, or other conveyance that moves through a fluid medium (generally air or water). On an aircraft the rudder is used primarily to counter adverse yaw and p-factor and is not the primary control used to turn the airplane. A rudder operates by redirecting the fluid past the hull (watercraft) or fuselage, thus imparting a turning or yawing motion to the craft. In basic form, a rudder is a flat plane or sheet of material attached with hinges to the craft's stern, tail, or after end. Often rudders are shaped so as to minimize hydrodynamic or aerodynamic drag. On simple watercraft, a tiller—essentially, a stick or pole acting as a lever arm—may be attached to the top of the rudder to allow it to be turned by a helmsman. In larger vessels, cables, pushrods, or hydraulics may be used to link rudders to steering wheels. In typical aircraft, the rudder is operated by pedals via mechanical linkages or hydraulics. HISTORY Generally, a rudder is "part of the steering apparatus of a boat or ship that is fastened outside the hull", that is denoting all different types of oars, paddles, and rudders.[1] More specifically, the steering gear of ancient vessels can be classified into side-rudders and stern-mounted rudders, depending on their location on the ship. A third term, steering oar, can denote both types. In a Mediterranean context, side-rudders are more specifically called quarter-rudders as the later term designates more exactly the place where the rudder was mounted.

  • Cole Yacht Club Sailing Fleet
Cole Yacht Club Sailing Fleet Flying Junior The International FJ is a doublehanded, ISAF International Class, trapeze planing dinghy. It is small, light and fast, suitable for virtually any combination of skipper and crew, from couples, to parent/child teams, and siblings. The FJ is very a competitive one-design boat, meeting strict Class Rules. The fact that the FJ is a one-design means that the boats are raced boat for boat, without handicapping. The light weight of the boat, combined with the trapeze as a hiking aid, means that a small crew can sail the FJ very effectively, and the relatively small size of the spinnaker is ideally suited to less-experienced or younger crews as well. Many one-designs are "builder's classes", meaning that the builder controls the boat, and has the sole right to build and sell that particular Class. This means the boats usually qualify to be legal in the Class simply by being made by that builder. In fact, as the tooling or molds wear out, later hulls are different than the originals-- are they faster, or slower?? Who knows? It is a less precise way to ensure compliance with Class Rules. Examples of Builder's classes are: JY-15, Vanguard 15, Flying Scot, Capri 14, Lido 14, Wayfarer, etc. The International FJ, on the other hand, can be built by any yard, or even a private builder. Each boat is "Measured" after building, thus ensuring boats are built closer to the original design. The boats are not "FJs" until this Measurement process is complete.
