Mast Furling Installation Guide
NORTH SAILS MAST FURLING INSTALLATION GUIDE Congratulations on purchasing your new North Mast Furling Mainsail. This guide is intended to help better understand the key construction elements, usage and installation of your sail. If you have any questions after reading this document and before installing your sail, please contact your North Sails representative. It is best to have two people installing the sail which can be accomplished in less than one hour. Your boat needs facing directly into the wind and ideally the wind speed should be less than 8 knots. Step 1 Unpack your Sail Begin by removing your North Sails Purchasers Pack including your Quality Control and Warranty information. Reserve for future reference. Locate and identify the battens (if any) and reserve for installation later. Step 2 Attach the Mainsail Tack Begin by unrolling your mainsail on the side deck from luff to leech. Lift the mainsail tack area and attach to your tack fitting. Your new Mast Furling mainsail incorporates a North Sails exclusive Rope Tack. This feature is designed to provide a soft and easily furled corner attachment. The sail has less patching the normal corner, but has the Spectra/Dyneema rope splayed and sewn into the sail to proved strength. Please ensure the tack rope is connected to a smooth hook or shackle to ensure durability and that no chafing occurs. NOTE: If your mainsail has a Crab Claw Cutaway and two webbing attachment points – Please read the Stowaway Mast Furling Mainsail installation guide. In particular, ttie requirements for maximizing thrust when sailing to windward and tacking downwind are presented. The results of water channel tests on six sail section shapes are also presented. Introduction The propulsion system is probably the single most neglect ed area of yacht design. The conventional triangular "soft" sails, while simple, practical, and traditional, are a long way from being aerodynamically desirable. The aerodynamic driving force of the sails is, of course, just as large and just as important as the hydrodynamic resistance of the hull. Yet, designers will go to great lengths to fair hull lines and tank test hull shapes, while simply drawing a triangle on the plans to define the sails. There is no question in my mind that the application of the wealth of available airfoil technology will yield enormous gains in yacht performance when applied to sail design. Re cent years have seen the application of some of this technolo gy in the form of wing sails on the lYRU "C" class catamar ans. In this paper, I will review some of the aerodynamic re quirements of yacht sails which have led to the development of the wing sails. For purposes of discussion, we can divide sail require ments into three points of sailing: • Upwind and close reaching. -

If at any point we can assist you, please call 800 433 4080 Fair Winds International Marine Standing Rigging The mast is a 2” aluminum extrusion with a slot on the aft side to which the sail’s boltrope or mainsail slides (options item) enter when hoisting the main sail. Attached to the mast will be two side stays, called Shrouds, and a Forestay. These three stainless cables represent the standing rigging of the West Wight Potter 15. The attachment points for the shroud adjusters are on the side of the deck. Looking at the boat you will find ¼” U-Bolts mounted through the deck on either side of the boat and the adjuster goes over these U-Bolts. Once the shroud adjuster slides in, the clevis pin inserts through the adjuster and is held in place with a lock ring. When both side stays are in place we move onto the mast raising. Mast Raising First, remove the mast pin holding the mast base in the bow pulpit. Second, move the mast back towards the mast step on the cabin top of the boat and pin the mast base into the aft section of the mast step (the mast step is bolted onto the cabin top of the boat). The mast crutch on the transom of the boat will support the aft end of the mast. -

Tami, you have the helm. If you’d be so kind, take us out.” When we came aboard, we all pitched in to ready the boat to sail. We all knew what to do and we went to work. • The VHF was tuned to 82A and the speakers were set to “both”. • The engine log book & hernia box were retrieved from the Cutter Shed. • The halyards were brought back to the bail at the base of the mast, but we left the dockside spinnaker halyard firmly tensioned on deck so boarding crew could use it to aid boarding. • The sail and wheel covers were removed and stored below. • The reef lines were attached and laid out on deck. • The five winch handles were placed in their proper holders. • The engine was checked: fuel level, fuel lines open, bilge level/condition, alternator belt tension, antifreeze level, oil and transmission level, RACOR filter, raw water intake set in the flow position, engine hours. This was all entered into the log book. • Sails were inventoried. We use the PESO system. We store sails in the forward compartment with port even, starboard odd. •The AC main was de-energized at the circuit panel. -

Spring 1991 $1.50 Pennsylvania • The Keystone States Official Boating Magazine Viewpoint Recently we received a letter suggesting that we were being contradictory in Boat Pennsylvania. According to one reader, we suggested that boaters wear personal flota- tion devices, but that the magazine photographs don't always show their use. Obtaining photographs for a magazine can be a difficult proposition. Sometimes we stage situations and take the photographs ourselves. More often, we rely on photographs submitted by contributors. Photos that depict the general boating public often do not show people wearing PFDs simply because the incidence of wearing them is so low. If we were to say that we would only use photos that showed boaters wearing PFDs, we would have a difficult time fmding acceptable photos. Generally, we try to show people wearing PFDs in small boats in situations in which devices should obviously be worn. On large boats, people most often do not wear their PFDs. Should people wear PFDs? Statistics show that wearing a PFD can save your life. Are PFDs needed all the time? Because accidents happen when they are least expected, wearing a PFD all the time is a good idea. Practically, however, as comfortable as the newest PFDs are, they can be excruciating on a hot July day. Many boaters also want to get a little sun. We accept this and our statistics show that the chances of having an accident where a PFD would have been a factor are much lower in the summer months. Ofcourse, circumstances do exist in which wearing a PFD,even on the hottest day, is warranted. -

Product Description / Information The Selden hydraulic boom vang is intended for use on a sailing boat as an aid to control the boom vertically. It needs to be connected to a hydraulic system that has a pump station and a holding tank. When pressurized the boom vang will contract and pull the boom downwards. The hydraulic system shall have a release valve that can release the pressure and let oil return to the tank. The internal gas pressure will then extend the vang so that it acts as a support to the boom, pushing it upwards.
