Votive Mass of Blessed Michael McGivney Diocesan Priest and Founder of the Knights of Columbus Blessed Michael McGivney, Priest He was born on August 12, 1852, in Waterbury (Connecticut) of Irish immigrant parents and baptized there on August 19 in St. Peter’s Church (predecessor to what is today the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception). Ordained priest on December 22, 1877, he was assigned to St. Mary’s Church, New Haven, where his remarkable ability to relate to all people of every social, economic and religious background became apparent. In 1882, he founded the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal benevolent association that offered spiritual and apostolic direction to Catholic men. He died of tuberculosis on August 14, 1890, while Pastor of St. Thomas’ Church in Thomaston (Connecticut) and was beatified on October 31, 2020, in Hartford (Connecticut). Father Michael McGivney was beatified on October 31, 2020, during a Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in the Archdiocese of Hartford, Conn., where an apostolic letter from Pope Francis was proclaimed, declaring that Father McGivney “henceforth be given the title of Blessed and that his liturgical memorial be kept each year on 13 August, in those places laid down by the norm of law.” A step in the process of canonization, beatification is meant primarily for devotion and veneration of the blessed within a local diocese — in this case, the Archdiocese of Hartford, in which Michael McGivney was born, served as a priest, founded the Knights of Columbus, and died. Not until a candidate for sainthood is canonized are devotion and veneration extended to the entire Church. -

Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters had been entrusted with the ruin of the liturgy he could not have done it better.”1 THE NEW MASS VS. THE TRADITIONAL MASS The Traditional Latin Mass, the most holy act of worship of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, was codified by Pope St. Pius V in his Bull Quo Primum in 1570. In his famous Bull Quo Primum, Pope St. Pius V forbade changing the traditional Latin Mass. Pope St. Pius V, Quo Primum Tempore, July 14, 1570: “Now, therefore, in order that all everywhere may adopt and observe what has been delivered to them by the Holy Roman Church, Mother and Mistress of the other churches, it shall be unlawful henceforth and forever throughout the Christian world to sing or to read Masses according to any formula other than this Missal published by Us… Accordingly, no one whosoever is permitted to infringe or rashly contravene this notice of Our permission, statute, ordinance, command, direction, grant, indult, declaration, will, decree, and prohibition. Should any venture to do so, let him understand that he will incur the wrath of Almighty God and of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul.”2 On April 3, 1969, Paul VI replaced the Traditional Latin Mass in the Vatican II churches with his own creation, the New Mass or Novus Ordo. Since that time, the world has seen the following in the Vatican II churches which celebrate the New Mass or Novus Ordo: The world has seen Clown Masses, in which the “priest” dresses as a clown in utter mockery of God. -

The Development of the Roman Rite By Michael Davies The Universe is the Catholic newspaper with the largest circulation in Britain. On 18 May 1979 its principal feature article was by one Hugh Lindsay, Bishop of Hexam and Newcastle. The Bishop's article was entitled "What Can the Church Change?" It was a petulant, petty, and singularly ill-informed attack upon Archbishop Lefebvre and Catholic traditionalists in general. It is not hard to understand why the Archbishop is far from popular with the English hierarchy, and with most hierarchies in the world for that matter. The Archbishop is behaving as a true shepherd, defending the flock from who would destroy it. He is a living reproach to the thousands of bishops who have behaved as hirelings since Vatican II. They not only allow enemies to enter the sheepfold but enjoy nothing more than a "meaningful dialogue" with them. The English Bishops are typical of hierarchies throughout the world. They allow catechetical programs in their schools which leave Catholic children ignorant of the basis of their faith or even teach a distorted version of that faith. When parents complain the Bishops spring to the defense of the heterodox catechists responsible for undermining the faith of the children. The English Bishops remain indifferent to liturgical abuse providing that it is initiated by Liberals. Pope Paul VI appealed to hierarchies throughout the world to uphold the practice of Communion on the tongue. Liberal clerics in England defied the Holy See and the reaction of the Bishops was to legalize the practice. The same process is now taking place with the practice of distributing Communion under both kinds at Sunday Masses. -

Introduction A Catholic assisting at a Traditional Latin Mass for the first time will most likely experience bewilderment and confusion as to when to kneel, sit and stand, for the postures that people observe at Traditional Latin Masses are so different from what he is accustomed to. To understand what people should really be doing at Mass is not always determinable from what people remember or from what people are presently doing. What is needed is an understanding of the nature of the liturgy itself, and then to act accordingly. When I began assisting at Traditional Latin Masses for the first time as an adult, I remember being utterly confused with Mass postures. People followed one order of postures for Low Mass, and a different one for Sung Mass. I recall my oldest son, then a small boy, being thoroughly amused with the frequent changes in people’s postures during Sung Mass, when we would go in rather short order from standing for the entrance procession, kneeling for the preparatory prayers, standing for the Gloria, sitting when the priest sat, rising again when he rose, sitting for the epistle, gradual, alleluia, standing for the Gospel, sitting for the epistle in English, rising for the Gospel in English, sitting for the sermon, rising for the Credo, genuflecting together with the priest, sitting when the priest sat while the choir sang the Credo, kneeling when the choir reached Et incarnatus est etc. -

The New Books for High Mass
St. Martin of Tours Church, St. Martinsville, Louisiana THE NEW BOOKS FOR HIGH MASS For those who were familiar with the official books of the Church prior to Vatican II, the new ones are not necessarily easy to use, nor is their arrangement quite as crystal clear as a true simplification could perhaps have produced. However, for better or worse, the new books exist, although they are not as well known as they deserve to be. About one year ago, the writer was assured by a Benedictine monk that there is no longer any Latin missal. This article will attempt to list the Latin books of the Roman rite and to provide some comments on their use, arrangement, and content. Broadly speaking, the liturgical books can be divided into three groups: A. The Mass books 1. Missale Romanum 2. Lectionarium 3. Graduate Romanum 4. Jubilate Deo B. The Office books — Liturgia Horarum C. The books for the administration of the sacraments HUGHESDON: MASS BOOKS 14 The second and third groups of books are hopefully to be dealt with in a sub- sequent article. The books of the first group are of considerable significance and interest to the "ordinary" parish and are dealt with here. As during the four hundred years which preceded the Second Vatican Coun- cil, the missal is the primary, (but no longer the sole) book which is required for the celebration of Mass. TORCHBEARER DURING HIGH MASS (MISSA CANTATA) OR SOLEMN HIGH MASS The Torchbearers (Tbs) are like the honor guard for Our Lord. During a High Mass, they take the place of the Sanctus Candle, an ancient Roman custom at Low Mass, which is lit from the Sanctus until the Ablutions. The Tbs also accompany Our Lord at the Communion Rail when Holy Communion is distributed1. During processions of the Blessed Sacrament, they accompany Him on either side of the canopy that covers Him2. It is the position of Tb, more so than of any other position, that adds solemnity to the Mass, who with his bright torch illuminates the Sanctuary and helps to surround Our Lord during the Canon, thereby highlighting and adding splendor to the most sacred part of the Mass3. General Rules • unity of action is very important and conducive in carrying out the various actions of Tbs’ office smoothly. Great care should be taken by Tbs to work as a team, and not as a group of individuals, especially in processing, genuflecting, and kneeling. • Tbs always turn inwards, that is, towards each other, when next to each other. • Tbs usually walk in their proper pairs and shoulder to shoulder [unless there is a lack of room; then they do so in single file, with the highest ranking Tb always going first] • whenever Tbs are processing, they should always be at least 4 pews away from each other [about 10 feet]; this will prevent Tbs from bunching up during processions, especially while genuflecting at the Foot of the Altar. -

For memorials: a) Proper texts, given on some days, must always be used; b) When there is a reference to a particular common, the most appropriate texts should be chosen according to the principles at the beginning of the commons. The page reference in each case indicates only the beginning of the common to which reference is made. c) If the rederence is to more than one common, one or the other may be used, according to pastoral need. It is always permissible to interchange texts from several Masses within the same common. For example, if a saint is both a martyr and a bishop, either the common of martyrs or the common of pastor (bishops) may be used. d) In addition to the commons which express a special characteristic holiness (e.g., of martyrs, virgins, or pastors), the texts from the common of saints, referring to holiness in general may always be used. For example, in the case of a saint who is both a virgin and a martyr, texts from the common of saints in general may be used, in addition to texts from the common of martyrs or the common of virgins. e) The prayers over the gifts and after communion, unless there are proper prayers, may be taken either from the common or from the current liturgical season. -

YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH—CONSIDERATIONS FOR PARISHES December 8, 2020 – December 8, 2021 There are several considerations for parishes in celebrating the Year of St. Joseph (Dec. 8, 2020-Dec. 8, 2021)—proclaimed by Pope Francis on December 8, 2020 in his apostolic letter Patris corde (“A Father’s Heart”). In Patris Corde, Pope Francis describes St. Joseph in the following ways: a beloved father, a tender and loving father, an obedient father, an accepting father, a creatively courageous father, a working father, and a father in the shadows. Votive Mass of St. Joseph • According to the decree from the Apostolic Penitentiary, Wednesday is “a day dedicated to the memory of the Saint according to the Latin tradition.” When not impeded by an obligatory memorial or feast, priests are encouraged to celebrate a Votive Mass of St. Joseph (Roman Missal, Votive Masses, n. 13) on Wednesdays while using the daily readings or choosing appropriate readings according to the General Instruction of the Roman Lectionary. These Wednesday celebrations are an opportune time to develop a catechesis on the saintly figure of St. Joseph and expound upon the virtues of Christian manhood and family life. Special Feast Days • March 19: Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of Blessed Virgin Mary • May 1: Joseph the Worker (optional memorial) Sample General Intercessions1 • St. Joseph was chosen to care for Jesus in childhood and youth. May God teach us to care for Christ’s body by caring for our brothers and sisters through St. Joseph’s example.
