Harvard owes its very name to the library that was left in 1638 by John Harvard to the newly created College. For 370 years, the College and the University that grew around it have had libraries at their heart. While the University sprouted new buildings, departments, and schools, the library grew into a collection of collections, adding new services and locations until its tendrils stretched as far from Cambridge as Washington, DC and Florence, Italy. -

Chaisson, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Meets Wednesdays, 7:45 - 9:45 pm, Harvard College Observatory, 60 Garden St., Phillips Auditorium, Bldg. D, across from Radcliffe Quad. Course Abstract: Evolution of the Universe, from its beginning in a cosmic expansion to the emergence of life on Earth and possibly other planets. Big-bang cosmology, origin and evolution of galaxies, stars, planets, life, and society. Scientific discussion of Nature writ large, from quarks to quasars, microbes to minds. Materials largely descriptive, based on insights from physics, astronomy, geology, chemistry, biology, and anthropology. Course Description: This broad survey course combines the essential ingredients of astrophysics and biochemistry to create an interdisciplinary synthesis called “cosmic evolution." Directed mainly toward non-science students, the course addresses, from a scientific viewpoint, some of the time-honored philosophical issues including who we are, whence we've come, and how we fit into cosmic scheme things. Our primary objective is to gain an appreciation for the origin of matter and the origin of life, while seeking unification throughout the natural sciences. The course divides into three segments: • Part I (~10% of the course) introduces some basic concepts, notably those scientific principles needed for the remainder of the course. • Part II (~40% the course) is heavily astronomical, using the concept of space to describe the many varied objects populating the Universe, from nearby planets to distant galaxies; this spatial theme serves as an inventory, explicating known material systems throughout the cosmos. -

Harvard's Interaction with the Military
Harvard University & the US Military – an introspection INTRODUCTION Since the middle of the 20th century, Harvard has unjustifiably been labeled as a bastion of left wing, anti- military elitists in the forefront of the myopic “Blame America first” radicals. However, the predominate opinion of faculties & undergraduates at most universities have tended to skew to the left since the Baby Boomers revolted in the late 1960’s against the values and traditions of their “greatest generation” parents who won World War II. For several recent decades, the decline in patriotism and service to country among many young Americans has been compounded by narcissistic lack of responsibility, the pleasure principle driving promiscuous sex and the growing use of illegal drugs, revisionist history, the breakdown of the traditional family and biased multi-media communications. In reality, Harvard alumni reflect a bell curve of opinions and many have demonstrated courage, integrity and commitment by serving in the US military from the American War for Independence to the current World War against Islamic Fundamentalist terrorism. The prime purpose of this introspection is to proudly promulgate the untold story of the long Crimson line of Harvard warriors as a role model for current and future undergraduates at Harvard and elsewhere. A secondary objective of this paper is to review the positive Harvard policies of the past that have helped to nurture and develop many Harvard heroic veterans and identify what needs to be done for Harvard to again have a preeminent patriotic role in educating and developing future military leaders. Dissertation Advisor: John Dudley Suzy Anne Scholar The History of Harvard University Abstract Founded in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony and named for its first donor, the Reverend John Harvard, who left his personal library and half his estate (about 800£) to the new institution, Harvard College was born into the Puritan tradition. The University today is still governed under its original charter granted by the Colony in 1650. This, with amendments and John Adams’ further definition in the fifth chapter of the Massachusetts Constitution of 1780, is the authority under which Harvard operates. iii THE MISSION OF HARVARD COLLEGE Harvard College adheres to the purposes for which the Charter of 1650 was granted: “The advancement of all good literature, arts, and sciences; the advancement and education of youth in all manner of good literature, arts, and sciences; and all other necessary provisions that may conduce to the education of the … youth of this country….” In brief: Harvard strives to create knowledge, to open the minds of students to that knowledge, and to enable students to take best advantage of their educational opportunities. To these ends, the College encourages students to respect ideas and their free expression, and to rejoice in discovery and in critical thought; to pursue excellence in a spirit of productive cooperation; and to assume responsibility for the consequences of personal actions.
