The Wilford and Barbara Jones Family Newsletter other residents and staff members express their fondness for Wilford and Barbara. In the last month at Lincoln Meadows, Wilford and Barbara have participated in the various activities available there, such as evening movies, educational videos presentations, “happy hour” events on Friday’s where musical guests perform, exercise classes, excursions to Safeway and Target. Variety singer Jerry Galloway is a recurring “happy hour” performer who Wilford and Barbara enjoy. (Greg, Scott, Jennifer, Wilford, Barbara, and Doug at 6831, S. Spotswood St., Littleton, CO [April 4, 2018]) The Wilford and Barbara Jones Family Newsletter Inaugural Issue Singer Jerry Galloway (from with https://www.gigmasters.com/varietysinger/jerrygalloway) Special Supplement Wilford and Barbara make regular trips to their dentist, for Wedding Photos of Dr. David Dunn, during which Dr. Dunn works towards plans to give them the best dental health possible. As Heather del Nero & Marcus Lund Dr. Dunn’s office is in Aurora, each trip is about 14 to 15 miles each way, taking about 25 or30 minutes each way. Fortunately, Wilford and Barbara very much like April 15, 2019 the driver who takes them to these appointments and Greg Jones, Editor enjoy visiting with her during their drives and in Dr. [email protected] Dunn’s waiting room. On Sunday they Whenever family members visit Wilford and Barbara at attended church at the Littleton Ward, where afterward their Lincoln Meadows apartment in Parker, Colorado, they were greeted by many longtime friends. They then paid a visit to Boyd and Lois Brown, their neighbors and friends on Spotswood Street, who had not been at Church. Andrew Brown made a special effort to join the group for this visit - - Wilford was a home teacher to the Brown family, including their grandson Andrew, for many years, and attended many of Andrew’s basketball games at Heritage High School. On Sunday afternoon Greg shared many pictures and stories from the Friday, April 29 wedding day of Marcus Lund and Heather del Nero. Wilford and Barbara were very happy for Marcus and Heather and were greatly interested in the events of that day. On Monday, April 1, Wilford, Barbara, and Greg had breakfast at the Original Pancake House, a longstanding tradition for all members of the Wilford and Barbara Scott and Peggy Jones Family. From Scott (there is a caption beneath each picture): Barbara, Wilford, and Greg at the Pancake House After breakfast, all went to a movie theater to see “Apollo 11,” a film they had all been looking forward to. Given his career in aerospace, Wilford especially appreciated this movie. Peggy and I went to the river to watch the new cargo cranes being shipped to the Port of Wilmington--3 miles down the road. 8APR2019 Barbara and Wilford at the 10:45 am showing of “Apollo 11” at the AMC Highlands Ranch 24 This is the view driving into the port--you can see the new Blue cranes. Peggy and Scott volunteer at Airlie Gardens--this was taken on Volunteer Orientation Day-2APR2019 Our 'Texas' friend came to windsurf at the 'Basin', where the Cape Fear river meets the Atlantic Ocean. 10MAR2019 Greg Greg is unhappily at risk of setting a personal record for maximum number of days without breaking a sweat in this millennium, as he has not been able to run in any meaningful way since he again injured his troublesome left foot on January 28. This last month he has been attempting to slowly and patiently work toward again experiencing the joys of profusely perspiring. In an effort to in some small measure emulate the tremendous book reading habits of Scott (who, for example, has read all 24 of author Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels), on April 2 Greg finished “Killing Floor,” the first Jack Reacher novel, but struggled to follow Scott is OLD! As seen at friend's house in Cary. Scott’s admonition to enjoy the books by not 31MAR2019 overthinking them, by not overly scrutinizing the plot and the Jack Reacher character for plausibility and consistency. Greg greatly enjoyed his with his parents on March 31 and April 1 in Parker, Colorado. in accompanying darksome photo. Douglas continues to enjoy his work recruiting new language interpreters for Language Line Solutions. Dana continues her outstanding work as Senior Financial Analyst at Core Health and Fitness. The recently had her attending a special seminar for them down in San Francisco. Fraulein Schmidt continues to manage the household, in her fashion. All love, Douglas and Dana Greg, Wilford, and Barbara in Apollo command module seating configuration before viewing “Apollo 11.” On Monday, April 8, Greg attended the annual conference of the LDS International Society. At lunch Greg was partly responsible for setting off an international incident when a man from Uganda stole his seat (or, alternatively, the man failed to recognize the international seat-saving protocol of someone leaving their napkin on their chair). After the dust settled, during lunch Greg found himself seated with a man from the Democratic Republic of Congo to his -Above we see Dana blowing out 1 candle (!) as we immediate left, and the man from Uganda on his celebrated her recent March 13th birthday. immediate right, and had very nice and interesting conversations with both. It turns out the “seat stealer” was a panelist at the conference and is currently serving as a stake president in Virginia - - after having had the opportunity to converse with him, were Greg a member of his stake, Greg would enthusiastically sustain him notwithstanding the seat stealing. Doug and Dana From Doug: -Fraulein Schmidt in new digs. Hope this finds you all well! Douglas, Dana, and Fraulein Schmidt have been doing well. Have recently move into new apartment - we are absolutely loving the increased space and 3rd floor view, though not shown too clearly Jennifer and Scott In March Scott and Jennifer traveled to Italy for the dedication of the Rome Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They visited other cities in Italy, and also went to Vienna, Austria. -Dana and Douglas in new digs. (excess cords still in need of wrangling) -Today we made 15 mile trip up north on lovely country Scott and Jennifer at Rome Temple road to do our grocery shopping in highly rural Scappoose. We have stores just a couple of blocks away, but sometimes the trip up north feels like a mini- vacation. We have yet to take the turn-off to go and investigate Germantown! Marcus and Heather From Marcus: On March 29th, Heather and Marcus got married! They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple, surrounded by family and close friends. They had a delicious luncheon at Tucanos where the guests received a personal box of chocolates. Yum! Following this, they had a reception in Provo, complete with food, traditions, and dancing. Christian William The night before the wedding of Heather and Marcus, in BYU’s Tanner Building Christian gave the Lund family an engineering lecture while all enjoyed CHIP cookies. Heather, William, Christian, and Marcus driving to the Scott, Victoria, Marcus, Christian, William, and Benjamin MTC William In February William received his mission call and is assigned to serve the Maryland Baltimore Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. William spoke in his Monterey Ward’s sacrament meeting on March 24, and entered the Provo Missionary Training Center on Wednesday, April 3. Heather, Marcus, William, and Christian at the Provo Temple (just east of the MTC) William with fellow missionary at the MTC. Benjamin is currently playing on the school’s lacrosse team. William with fellow missionaries at the MTC. William’s companion is Elder Fagenello, to his left. Benjamin At Carmel High School, Benjamin was recently named one of Valedictorian’s (no grade lower than an A, all four years). Ben at Mormon Prom Night with his friend Sarah. Saturday, April 13. 2. The James Garner character helps a blind prisoner try to escape. I said one reason he was a great character was that he was willing to help the blind prisoner. William quickly clarified – – the character wanted to help the blind prisoner. 3. Several times while watching the film William would identify the weapons being used by various characters. “That’s an mp40.” “That’s a such-and-such, that’s a nice weapon.” I was amazed at his knowledge, asked how he knew these things, to which he replied “I read books.” The following day he revealed the secret – – he plays the computer game “Call of Duty,” and his knowledge of the weapons comes from that game.

    Under the (Territorial) Sea: Reforming U.S. Mining Law for Earth’s Final Frontier James D. Friedland LA LAW REVIEW LA LAW ABSTRACT C U As mineral prices continue to rise and high-quality terrestrial supplies dwindle, hardrock mining will soon spread to the one place on this planet it currently does not occur: underwater. The United States has regulations permitting the issuance of offshore mineral leases, but these regulations rest on questionable authority from 1953 and are already obsolete even though they have never been used. The United States will need to adopt new legislation before it can effectively access and develop this final mining frontier. The history of American mineral law is littered with mistakes and scandals. But in this particular context, that tortuous past can have a silver lining if used as a precautionary tale: Learning from the mistakes of onshore mining law, onshore oil law, and offshore oil law, the United States has an opportunity to proactively reform underwater mineral law to responsibly usher in the future of hardrock mining. In light of this opportunity, this Comment examines three case studies from U.S. mineral law to extract lessons and suggests how such lessons could inform lawmakers in drafting a sensible offshore mining law. autHOR Jamie Friedland, J.D.     Assisted Migration: Redefining Nature and Natural Resource Law Under Climate Change Alejandro E. Camachot To avoid extinctions and other harms to ecological health from escalating climatic change, scientists, resource managers, and activists are considering and even engaging in "assisted migration"-the intentional movement of an organism to an area in which its species has never existed. This Article explores the profound implications of climate change for American natural resource management through the lens of this controversial adaptation strategy. It details arguments regarding the scientific viability and legality of assisted migration under the thicket of laws that govern natural resources in the United States. The Article asserts, however, that the fundamental tensions raised by this strategy are ethical: to protect endangered species or conserve native biota; to manage ecological systems actively or leave nature wild and uncontrolled; and to preserve resources or manage them to promote theirfitness underfuture conditions. The Article explains why contemporarynatural resource law'sfidelity to historic baselines, protecting preexisting biota, and shielding nature from human activity is increasingly untenable, particularly in light of climate change. Active, anticipatory strategies such as assisted migration may not only be permissible but even necessary to avert substantial irreversibleharm to ecological systems. Scientists and resource managers should focus on developing scientific data to aid analyses of the risks and benefits of assisted migration in particular circumstances. The following excerpt is taken from a speech given by Tony Kronman, former dean of Yale Law School, to byu law students on February 13, 2006. broadly speaking, American higher education might be divided into three historical phases. In phase one, every college was the adjunct of a church. College and church belonged together; they were inseparable twins. In phase two, church and college drew apart, but the college continued so long as the tradition of secular humanism retained its vitality and credibility. Colleges continued along with the churches to view themselves as having some responsibility to address the question of life’s meaning and to bring their students into a help- ful engagement with it. In phase three, the phase that we are now in today, colleges have abandoned that com- mitment altogether, and the result has been that the responsibility now lies entirely in the hands of our religious institutions. They will never abandon it; how can they? It would be inconsis- tent with their nature as institutions of a religious kind. But I believe it would be better not just for our colleges but also for the culture at large if the col- leges were to reclaim their voice and become again not so much a competi- tive center of instruction in the mean- ing of life but at least another and different one. It would make our cul- ture a richer and better place than it is today. So, to the question posed by the title of my talk, “Is the meaning of life academic?” I certainly hope so.
