LATEST UK CRAFT BEER RELEASES 4th – 10th January 2021

Unity Co. Little Pleasures 3.2% Pale Ale A light, juicy Pale Ale that’s small on strength but packs a big punch of flavour. A delicate blend of Amarillo, Citra and Simcoe come together for a bright citrus aroma full of juicy fruits and a super soft drinkable body.

Unity Brewing Co. May Provisions: EIPA 6% IPA A homage to the traditional English India Pale Ale using heritage Chevalier barley from Crisp Malt for a rich malty flavour with a hint of marmalade, and UK Challenger hops from Brook House Hops for spice and bitterness.

Whiplash Beer Hot Pursuit 5% Pale Ale An initial aroma of bright tangerine and mandarin, pineapple, apricot and lemon. A honey malt base gives way to fruits - again mandarin, tangerine, white grape, apricots and lemons. Soft low bitterness, slightly sweet finish with a slight lingering of pleasant hop oil and tingling resin.

Left Handed Giant Brewing Co. Breathing : Conversations 8% DIPA Collab with Finback. This easy drinking, juicy DIPA with a hefty dry hop of Citra and Mosaic, was brewed to a recipe by Finback and Soul by You, a recipe which has now been brewed by many, all with an individual take on it yet all dedicated to being a base for conversation.

Boxcar Brewery Singularity Drive 8% DIPA Dank mangos and powdered papaya sherbet. Vanilla chews, thick and warming for the winter months. Comet in the whirlpool; Citra, Mosaic, Azacca and Ekuanot.

Turning Point Brew Co. It’s A Can Of Magic 5.5% IPA Dangerously drinkable at 5.5% ABV. Jam packed with hops and full of citrus and tropical fruit notes. Featuring: Simcoe, Cascade, Sabro, Bru-1, and Amarillo hops.

Electric Bear Brewing Co. 5 Steps Forward, 6 Steps Back 6.5% Belgian IPA A typical Belgian malty backbone is fermented using a Belgian Yeast strain to produce fruity banana flavours. It’s a hybrid IPA with all the tropical, citrusy flavours of an American IPA but with the malty banana flavours typical of a Belgian beer.

3 Electric Bear Brewing Co. Overdub 7.2% Black Rye IPA Overdub has all the citrus and tropical fruit elements of a big hoppy IPA, with some amount of spice from the rye and a subtle roastiness. This beer is black to look at but with the unexpected fruity flavours of an IPA.

Electric Bear Brewing Co. A Pale Of Two Cities <0.5% Alcohol Free Pale Ale Collab with Low Tide Brewing. A hazy pale ale with aromas of peach and a great hoppy flavour without the booze. Unfined, unfiltered, unpasteurised natural beer.

Overtone Brewing Co. Can Ye West 8% West Coast DIPA A big citrus forward hop bomb with a solid malt base, this double west coast IPA combines bitterness and sweetness in an enticing way making this beer hard to put down. Made with Citra, Simcoe, Rakau and Columbus.

The Wild Beer Co. Zobo 5% Gose Inspired by a traditional Nigerian drink, this is a mixed fermentation fruity, floral, spicy, sour beer. Pineapples, ginger and hibiscus flowers, balanced with salt and acidity; resulting in a 3-dimensional flavour experience.

The Wild Beer Co. Madness IPA 2021 6.5% West Coast IPA Wild Beer’s original West Coast IPA, brewed from 2012-18, has been revisited and reimagined with hops from 2020. Madness is bursting with mouth-watering tropical flavours and aromas and has an unapologetic West Coast bitterness.

North Brewing Co. North X Track 6.8% IPA Collab with Track Brewing Co. Brewed using Talus for its bright lime, juicy orange and creamy coconut profile. For good measure, sprinkled with some El Dorado, Citra and orange zest to polish up that citrus sunshine.

Vocation Brewery No.666 10.9% Russian Imperial Stout Collab with Kirkstall Brewery. Crafted with Colliano blend No.666 Coffee from Antonia & Panesar. The coffee enhances the chocolate flavours of the dark malt and provides a smooth, sweet finish.

Vocation Brewery Mesmerism 10% TIPA A punchy 10% TIPA. Expect a juicy explosion of flavour from a mighty combination of Galaxy, Simcoe, Mosaic and Enigma.

Brew By Numbers 55|Double IPA – Mosaic & Nelson 8.2% DIPA Mosaic lays the foundation with waves of ripe tropical fruit alongside a fresh berry aroma. Nelson Sauvin adds depth, with flavours of white grape, subtle grassy notes and a refined fruity edge. A generous oat addition softens the profile, resulting in a beer that is juicy, full-bodied and smooth.

Mondo Brewing Co. Technological Adolescence 5.1% Pale Ale Extra Pale Ale malt provides the base. Wheat, Oats and Cara Clair added for body. Amarillo and Azacca in the cool pool. Dry hopped with Amarillo, Azacca and Citra. Fermented with a blend of American and English Ale yeast strains.

Pomona Island Brew Co. Bibbity-Bobbity Hat 5.3% DDH Pale Ale Pale Ale with Simcoe, Mosaic and Chinook.

Pomona Island Brew Co. I Still Believe 6.5% DDH IPA An all Mosaic double dry hopped IPA.

Track Brewing Co. Managing Expectations 8% West Coast DIPA A West Coast Double IPA brewed with Bagby Beer Co. and Crosby Hops, who provided the freshest Centennial hops straight from the kiln and into this beer.

London Beer Factory Jungle Trip 5.3% Pale Ale Fresh Pale Ale - Packed full of Nelson Sauvin, Summit & Comet hops - combining for far out tropical grapefruit and grape flavours.

www.thecottontextilecompany.co.uk [email protected]

Polly’s Brew Co. DDH Every Piece Matters 10% TIPA A simple but mega effective hop bill of Citra and Mosaic. The amped up version of 'Every Piece Matters'. Positively dripping with tangerine, peach, and passionfruit notes, with just a little bit of grapefruit to back things up.

BrewDog Bosh! AF 0.5% Alcohol Free Beer Collab with Bosh. Brimming with speciality malts and North American hops, bitterness is front and centre. Squeezing this many hops in, and the alcohol out.

Northern Monk Holy Faith 0% Alcohol Free Pale Ale From the season of gluttony emerges Holy Faith. No alcohol. No flavour sacrifices. Whether your January is wet or dry.

PATREON ANNOUNCMENT Discover the benefits of membership

When we launched This Week in Craft Beer in January 2020, we were blissfully unaware of what lay ahead of us! Considering the obstacles we have all faced, we are proud of what we managed to accomplish in our first year.

However, we have lots more that we want to do in 2021! In order to fund these activities and to enable our Community to get more involved with the creative process at TWICB, we have launched a Patreon Membership Programme.

Full details of how you can get involved starting at less than the cost of a half-decent can of beer per month, can be found at patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer.

Don't worry, our weekly Newsletter and Podcast will continue to be FREE FOR EVERYONE! The Patreon Membership offers access to range of brand new TWICB Products and Services. Please check it out and let us know what you think?! www.thisweekincraft.beer/patreon

Q. Why are you starting to charge for things that we have enjoyed for free all this year? A. We aren't! The weekly Newsletter and weekly Brewer-interview Podcast will continue to be free to everyone. Patreon will enable us to offer brand-new additional products and services to Members.

Q. What's this about Members getting involved with TWICB? A. We have been amazed and delighted with the amount of engagement and feedback we have received during our first year, via social media, email etc. The UK Craft Beer Community is clearly engaged, knowledgeable and sociable! We want to provide a mechanism for bringing the community into our creative process, allowing people to participate in the planning, research, production and delivery of our products.

Q. Why do you have to charge for things? A. TWICB is run by just two people: Rob and Steve. Whilst it is undoubtedly a labour of love, it has developed into something that consumes a significant part of our working weeks. Steve works mainly on the Newsletter, where the New Beers Section alone takes many hours per week, to research, collate and format. Rob works mainly on the podcast, where each episode takes several hours to schedule, research, record, edit and promote. Whilst we will continue to invest this time to produce the free products, we think Patreon could be a great way of funding the time and effort that we want to devote to developing new products and services.

Q. Apart from your time, what specifically will the Patreon proceeds be used to fund? A. As soon as the COVID-19 situation permits, we want to take the podcast on the road, to record Brewer interviews at their own Taprooms, as well as record live segments at Festivals, Tap-Takeovers and other beery events of note. In order to provide a quality finished audio product, we will need to invest in some decent mobile recording equipment, not to mention the cost of travelling the length and breadth of Britain in the pursuit of great interviews!

Q. What is the thought process behind the bundles of Patreon Membership bonuses that you are offering? A. We have tried to come up with bundles that combine some community benefits, exclusive digital products, exclusive physical products, invites to exclusive TWICB events, discounts on TWICB Grand Tours and opportunities to participate in the TWICB creative process. We have tried to price each Membership Level so that each offers outstanding value for money. We have also tried to be mindful of the number of Patreon members that we can realistically include in each bonus activity. (Clearly the invite to participate in the podcast interview or attend the TWICB "Board Meeting" needs to be strictly limited in numbers, or else the bonus would cease to be "exclusive” and would risk disrupting the actual process itself.)

Q. Are the Membership Benefits and Levels set in stone? A. Of course not! We are literally making this up as we go along currently! We would love to get your feedback on the Levels, the Benefits, and indeed the very idea of using Patreon in the first place! Please hit us up on IG (@thisweekincraft.beer) or via email [email protected]. We confidently expect to need to adjust the Patreon model as we go along, based on feedback.

Q. Is this like a Gym membership, where I sign up in January, and then regret it for the rest of the year?! A. Definitely Not! Membership is month-to-month and you can cancel your membership at any time. Only caveat here is that certain Member Benefits (mainly those ones that involve a significant cost for us to provide to you) are only unlocked after three or six months at a certain tier. www.patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer

12 BREWER’S CORNER Miscellaneous Beery News

This is probably the first time this column has ever linked to an article by the BBC! Here they are bemoaning the likely closure of Brains Brewery in .

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-55558814

A comment right at the end that blames the closure on the growth of "funky localised brands". Give us funky and localised any day, in preference to a cask beer brewed to a recipe from the nineteenth Century!

Beer and pizza has always been a match made in heaven, but who knew that we should be using beer as the liquid in our pizza dough?! https://www.craftbeer.com/beer-and-food/beer-infused-pizza- dough-is-a-perfect-brewpub-pairing

We can't wait to give this a try...!

A London Beer and Pub Guide published an interesting summary of 2020, which shows far less carnage than you might anticipate?

https://www.beerguideldn.com/news.464

One thing that this probably highlights, is that the best pubs and taprooms are mostly going to ride out the pandemic just fine, but it is a tough market in which to be average or worse.

Finally, Johnny and Brad at the excellent Craft Beer Channel publish their list of Trends and Breweries to Watch for 2021.

13 Viva la Revolución!

Here at TWICB, we are not claiming to be the UK's largest lobby group, or even the UK's largest beer lobby group(!), but we do have a growing audience, who we hope might be willing to support the following Craft Beer related causes

Petition Southwark Council to pedestrianise the Bermondsey Beer Mile on a Saturday.

With pedestrianisation of some of the busiest streets in Bermondsey on Saturdays only, we can get the many bars and restaurants back up to their previous operating levels whilst keeping customers safe with outdoor drinking.

Reverse the change to Small Brewers Relief

The Treasury has announced changes to Small Brewers Relief (SBR) – the progressive tax system that has revolutionised UK brewing. These changes will reduce the 50% duty threshold from 5,000hl to 2,100hl: small breweries will have to pay more duty, whilst larger breweries could pay the same or less.

Sign the petition here

At the moment, we are conscious that this is very London-focused! Please help us to make this list of causes more UK-inclusive, by suggesting your local petitions for inclusion on this list!

WHO OWNS WHO…?

This Week in Craft Beer is dedicated to supporting and promoting Independent UK Craft Breweries and the ecosystem surrounding them.

We define Independent as being those breweries who are not wholly or partly owned by a macro brewery. A macro brewery is generally defined as a large, national or international brewery that produces and distributes more than 6 million barrels of beer per year.

Getting a new brewery off the ground is an expensive business, so most have external shareholders in some shape or form, whether through friends and family, crowdfunding, or some other form of investment. In our opinion, this does not compromise their independence, as long as the shareholder is not a macro brewery.

Why does this matter?

Having a Macro as a parent company (even a minority shareholder), gives the brewery huge advantages of patronage, including access to cheaper or scarce ingredients, access to distribution networks, access to points of sale including draft taps and pub fridges etc. For example, in 2017 ABInbev bought the entire South African hop market for its own use and denied access to all independent breweries.
