The three longer works, published earlier in this edition, have an im- pact which to the uninitiated is well-nigh overwhelming. After them these shorter and more manageable works will be turned to, i£ not for relaxation— their erudition forbids that— at least with a feeling of lively interest, as preliminary studies for the weightier volumes which they now appear to summarize. Much of the symbolic matter has been referred to in other earlier publi- cations: the visions of Zosimos in “Transformation Symbolism in the Mass,” and Mercurius in all the above-mentioned works but more especially in “The Psychology of the Transference,” while “The Philosophical Tree” develops the theme of the tree symbol discussed sporadically in Symbols of Transformation. The “Commentary on The Secret of the Golden Flower” is of considerable historical interest. Jung says in Memories, Dreams, Reflections (ch. 7): “Light on the nature of alchemy began to come to me only after I had read the text of the Golden Flower, that specimen of Chinese alchemy which Richard Wil­ helm sent me in 1928. I was stirred by the desire to become more closely acquainted with the alchemical texts.” “Paracelsus as a Spiritual Phenomenon” stands out as a separate study with a powerful appeal, perhaps because Jung could identify himself rather closely and sympathetically with that dynamic and explo­ sive personage, his own countryman. Because of its emphasis öri alchemical sources, it is included in the present volume rather than in Volume 15 with two shorter essays on Paracelsus as ä personality and physician. v EDITORIAL NOTE The Editors and the translator are greatly indebted to the late Mr. A.     SYDNEY STUDIES Alchemical Reference in Antony and Cleopatra LYNDALL ABRAHAM Lepidus: Your serpent of Egypt is bred now of your mud by the operation of your sun: so is your crocodile. (II.vii.26-7) The phrase "the operation of your sun" is a distinctly alchemical term. It refers to the opus alchymicum as a whole and is first known to occur in one of the oldest and most famous alchemical documents, the Emerald Table: "What I have said concerning the operation of the Sun is finished."1 The Tabula Smaragdina or Emerald Table, ascribed to Hermes Tris­ megistus or the Egyptian Thoth, was not only one of the most important sources of medieval alchemy, but continued to be considered as the basis of alI alchemical law by alchemists right through to the seventeenth cen­ tury. The earliest known version was discovered by E. J. Holmyard in an eighth-century Arabic text, and it was translated into Latin around the time of the thirteenth century. The first English translation appears as a part of Roger Bacon's The Mirror of Alchimy (London 1597). The con­ tents of the influential Table occur repeatedly in both Renaissance and seventeenth-century alchemical treatises, including John Dee's Monas Hieroglyphica (1564: reprinted in 1591 and included in the alchemical anthology Theatrum Chemicum in 1602), the De Alchemia (1541-Table included in full), George Ripley's The Compound of Alchymie (1591), William Bloomfield's Bloomfield's Blossoms, Thomas Norton's Ordinal of Alchemy (1477), and Michael Maier's Atalanta Fugiens (1617).2 In Euphrates or The Waters

Prehistoric Times To tell the story of chemistry, it is best to start in prehistoric times with primitive humans. In his quest for survival, and endowed with a natural curiosity, primitive man learned much about his environment. He was aware of physical properties of substances such as color, shape or form, hardness, taste, weight, density in the form of relative weight, and odor. And he was most probably aware of natural physical changes such as water to ice (and vice versa), lava to rock, certain rocks to dust, etc. It is also safe to assume that primitive man, although he had no knowledge of chemistry, was aware of chemical change in the forms of decaying organic matter, natural production of ozone from lightning (by noting the odor of the ozone), wood burning into charcoal and ash, etc. But primitive man was by no means any sort of scientist and he made no logical or organized study of natural phenomena. The information he gathered about the world was passed from generation to generation by memory, demonstration, or by observation without explanation or any understanding of the true reasons for these phenomena.

    8 Alchemy in the Ancient World: From Science to Magic PAUL T. KEYSER "Alchemy" is the anglicised Byzantine name given to what its practitioners referred to as "the Art" (xexvii) or "Knowledge" (eTiiaxTi^Ti), often characterised as divine (Geia), sacred (lepd) or mystic (^\)aTiKT|).^ While this techne underwent many changes in the course of its life of over two thousand years (and there are traces of it even in modem times, as I will discuss), a recognisable common denominator in all the writings is the search for a method of transforming base metals (copper, iron, lead, tin) into noble (electrum, gold or silver).^ There is unfortunately no modem critical edition of any of these writings (the extant editions being old or uncritical or both), though the Bude has begun the process.^ In this essay I sketch the background and origins of the ancient alchemy, as well as its later transmutation into a mystical art of personal transformation. Finally I tum to the modem period and briefly examine the influence of this mystical tradition in our own world-picture. Background I begin with the first evidence of human chemical technology, which takes us back, well before the ancient period of merely 2,000 years ago, to the Palaeolithic Middle Pleistocene of 200,000 years ago—and the mastery of fire.'* The achievement of this first controlled chemical reaction marks a * W.     JUNG ON RELIGION, GNOSTICISM, HIS ENCOUNTER WITH THE EAST, AND ALCHEMY RUNNING HEAD: Jung, Religion, Gnosticism, the East, Alchemy David Johnston Jung, Religion, Gnosticism, the East, Alchemy 2 ABSTRACT In this paper I briefly survey the importance that Jung placed on the religious instinct, his life long engagement with Christianity, as well as his abiding interest in Gnosticism, his encounter with the East, and his discovery of the Grail tradition and alchemy. I also look at Jung’s observations on Nazism, his realization of the living God and concept of the unus mundus. Jung sees Christianity as an ailing religion in need of healing. From his studies of the East, he gains much supportive knowledge that affirms his own empirical findings and personal experiences. While in India he realizes that his mission is to provide healing for the Western soul, which he understands requires compensatory truths for its Christian worldview that he particularly uncovers in Gnosticism, medieval alchemy, and the Grail tradition.     The Alchemical Process of Transformation Nigel Hamilton 1985 The Origins of Alchemy Alchemy traces its roots back to the Egyptian civilisation where it emerged as a practising art and science and an expression of the Egyptian religion. Thus it was that the Egyptian Thoth, the god of mathematics and science, became the inspirational source for the Hellenistic figure of Hermes Trismegistus, who in turn became the model for the medieval Mercurius. The Greeks learned their Alchemy in the fourth century BC, whilst in Egypt. Several Greek philosophers, scientists, and mystics were initiated into the ancient Egyptian mysteries at this time. The Alchemists of the Middle Ages learnt their art from the Arabs in Spain and Southern Italy, who in turn had adopted it from the Greeks. Thus it was that by the twelfth and thirteenth centuries alchemy had already appeared in Western Europe via Sicily and Spain. Typical places of study were at the Universities of Palermo, Toledo, Barcelona, and Segovia. Understanding Transmutation as the Basis of Alchemy. Alchemy is best known for its belief that lead can be transmuted into gold. However, the transmutation of non-precious metals into gold is simply a metaphor for the soul being freed from a "dead, leaden state of mind," to that of realising its own light nature and that is derived from pure spirit. The alchemists believed that the basis of the material world was a Prima Materia, or prime chaotic matter, which might be actuated into existence if impressed by "form." The "forms" arose in the shape of the elements, earth, water, fire, and air.

BEING UPDATED AND CORRECTED 2009-10 As a "science" or "art" which has been practiced and written about for more than two millennia by a plethora of individuals from the most varied religious, philosophical and other backgrounds with diverse aims, intentions and world views, it is hardly possible to define what is alchemy. Anyone who takes the trouble to read alchemical texts and treatises representative of Greco-Roman, Jewish, Christian, Islamic or other dimensions of alchemy will readily come to realize that alchemy has long been much more than a mere `prelude to chemistry' indulged in by credulous souls whose main aim was to get rich quick by the making of much gold. In generalized and simplistic terms `exoteric alchemy' has to do with the attempt to prepare the `philosophers stone', the `elixir' or `tincture' which was (and is by some) believed to be endowed with the power to `perfect everything in its own nature'. It could, for example, transmute such "base" metals as lead, tin, copper, iron or mercury into precious silver or gold. Closely related historically to medicine and pharmacology the `exoteric' alchemical task could also be viewed as the attempt to restore or `perfect' human health and prolong life. `Esoteric alchemy', often thought to be part and parcel of `exoteric alchemy', may include the mystic experience and contemplation of alchemical processes and secrets in terms of the receipt of true gnosis and the attainment of inner realization, spiritual progress and eternal life.
