Mystery Skulls Is the Nom De Plume of Los Angeles-Based Electronic-Soul DJ/Producer/Artist Luis Dubuc Mystery Skulls is the nom de plume of Los Angeles-based electronic-soul DJ/producer/artist Luis Dubuc. Born in New Orleans and raised in Dallas, the 28-year old fluent, Spanish-speaking Dubuc found his own sound within the confines of beats, synths and grooves stemming from the 90’s New Jack Swing R&B sounds of his childhood and musical heroes such as Prince, Michael Jackson, Daft Punk, Roger & Zapp, the Gap Band, and Slayer. Dubuc first got his start playing drums in a local band with friends called Thirty Called Arson, but he truly found his niche, however, in writing and recording electronica pop/rock songs with a laptop and Wurlitzer. Under the alias The Secret Handshake, Dubuc developed a cult-following with critical acclaim of his music while playing the guitar, synthesizer, piano, percussion and computer-generated sound effects from his computer including his 2009 and third studio album My Name Up in Lights. Recorded in his Dallas apartment, the album landed at #7 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and #45 on the Independent Albums chart, leading to an opener slot on Alternative Press’ 2009 “The Fall Ball” tour as well as shows in Australia. In 2011, Dubuc ended life as The Secret Handshake posting on Twitter “Done with the past. Proud of what I accomplished but ready to move on.” Dubuc reinvented himself as Mystery Skulls with the release of his self-titled EP that December. The 4-song album offers a refined formula of his indie synth-pop soundscape juxtaposed with his soul- influenced vocal stylings. Since then, Mystery Skulls has been making his rounds across Los Angeles with his ability to insert life into any venue he performs at, opening for Flume at a sold out show at The Echo, acquiring a coveted residency at Bootleg Theatre, winning over the discerning crowd at Bardot’s “School Night” and playing with Chromeo, Avicii, Yeasayer and Chic on select dates. After seeing the one-man-band bring the house down at Los Angeles' Brokechella Festival, the smitten staff at Warner Bros. Records' A&R department signed Dubuc in June of 2013. Dubuc is currently working on his debut album which features production from another childhood-hero Nile Rodgers from the American disco and R&B group Chic who has seen a modern-day resurgence after appearing on three tracks from Daft Punk’s recent LP where he lent his renowned guitar-stylings to their hit “Get Lucky.” The producer/arranger/composer has also worked with dance heavyweights Avicii, Chase & Status and Felix Da Housecat to bridge the gap between funk and electronic music with Mystery Skulls as his latest muse. To close out the year, Mystery Skulls will head to New York for CMJ 2013 and revisit his birth place in November for the Voodoo Festival before taking part in Miami’s Art Basel in December. .

Nile Rodgers in New York City, 1991 68 MUSICAL EXCELLENCE Nile Rodgers HE CREATES A DISTINCTIVE SOUND ON THE RECORDS HE WRITES, PRODUCES, ARRANGES, AND PLAYS ON. BY ROB BOWMAN Nile Rodgers’ influence on popular music over the past forty years is nearly unfathomable. As a guitarist, songwriter, producer, arranger, and funkster extraordinaire, Rodgers has left his imprint on a stun- ningly wide array of genres including disco, R&B, rock, mainstream pop, hip-hop, and EDM. Looking over the breadth of his career, a case could easily be made that no single individual has had a greater impact on the sound of pop, from the late 1970s to the present day. ¶ Alongside his partner, bass player wunderkind Bernard Edwards, Rodgers wrote and produced hit after hit for Chic, Sister Sledge, and Diana Ross, tearing up both the dance floor and the radio. After Chic broke up and Rodgers and Edwards went their separate ways, Rodgers broke free of the disco moniker and reinvented himself, producing, arranging, and playing guitar on David Bowie’s come- back album, Let’s Dance (1983), and Madonna’s breakout album, 69 Like a Virgin (1984). Along the way he took INXS and Chic in their prime then Duran Duran to new heights with “Original Sin” with Rodgers and and “The Reflex,” respectively, and produced albums by Bernard Edwards Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck, the B-52s, and David Lee Roth. center stage, 1979 He played key guitar parts on Steve Winwood’s “High- er Love” and Michael Jackson’s HIStory. Here, we revisit the ranking's 100 biggest hits of all-time. On Aug. 4 1958, Billboard launched the Hot 100, forever changing pop music -- or at least how it's measured. Sixty years later, the chart remains the gold-standard ranking of America's top songs each week. And while what goes into a hit has changed (bye, bye jukebox play; hello, streaming!), attaining a spot on the list -- or better yet, a coveted No. 1 -- i s still the benchmark to which artists explore, from Ricky Nelson on the first to Drake on the latest. Which brings us to the hottest-of-the-hot list the 100 most massive smashes over the charts six decades. 1/10 1. The Twist - 1960 Chubby Checker The only song to rule the Billboard Hot 100 in separate release cycles (one week in 1960, two in 1962), thanks to adults catching on to the song and its namesake dance after younger audiences popularized them. 2.
