  • Democratic Decline in Indonesia: the Role of Religious Authorities Saskia Schäfer
Democratic Decline in Indonesia: The Role of Religious Authorities Saskia Schäfer Abstract The Council of Indonesian Islamic Scholars (MUI) has exerted increased political influence in Indonesian politics since the fall of Suharto. Constituted by representatives from various Muslim civil society organizations, the council was originally intended by Suharto to serve as a political representative for Indonesia’s two largest civil society organizations, the Muhammadiyah and the Nahdlatul Ulama. This article argues that in addition to its own non-democratic structures and its fatwas opposing democratic values, the MUI has contributed to Indonesia’s democratic stagnation and decline in two ways: by undermining the authority of elected state representatives through its anti-pluralist stance and its epistocratic claims, and by imperiling the fragile but functioning balance of religion and the state through its undermining of long-established religious civil society organizations. Keywords: Islam, democracy, religious authorities, Indonesia, authoritarianization DOI: 10.5509/2019922235 Introduction wenty years after the fall of the military dictator Suharto in 1998, Indonesia has not fallen into the hands of Islamist extremists via Telections, nor did the country’s oligarchs succeed in passing the presidency from one former military officer (Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono) to another (Prabowo Subianto) in the 2014 election. The results of this search is, the concept of architectural homogeneity establishing assumption that certain architectural forms are supposed to represent "universal identity and modernity" of Muslim architecture. Meanwhile, the concept of architectural hybridity to show enrichment architecture identity because of the attempt to combine aspects of the universality of Islam with locality of Nusantara. Both these aspects can be positioned as the two subjects of mutual dialogue in a parallel position. As architecture strategy, the concept of hybridity reflects the effort or ijtihad in interpreting local and universal contextuality in the contemporary conditions that are constantly evolving and open. Keywords: Nusantara mosque, hybridity of architecture, homogeneity of architecture, architecture strategy Abstrak Ada dua titik tolak dalam desain arsitektur masjid di Nusantara, yaitu arsitektur homogenitas dan arsitektur hibriditas. • Youth, Mosques and Islamic Activism: Islamic Source Books in University-Based Halaqah1
Youth, Mosques and Islamic Activism: Islamic Source Books in University-based Halaqah1 Hilman Latief* Abstract This paper discusses the emergent religious enthusiasm among young Indone- sian Muslims, with special reference to the university-based halaqah activists in Yogyakarta. Halaqah is a growing phenomenon of socio-religious expression amongst university students. Within the Islamic movement, it has had a new and powerful influence on Indonesian Muslim youth cultures. It provides a sys- tem within which young Muslims seeking a new personal or collective social identity can cultivate their religious orientation and thirst for knowledge. The regional spread of halaqah seems to correspond to the rapidly increasing number of publishers producing the halaqah reference materials that the movement desires, and making them readily available in the market. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive account of the religious, political, and cultural orien- tations of halaqah members by examining the reading materials circulating within halaqah. It argues that campus-based mosques are controlled by two kinds of halaqah, namely Salafi halaqah and Tarbiyah halaqah. The findings also show that Indonesia’s two mainstream moderate-traditionalist and reformist Islamic movements, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, are less favored by university-based halaqah activists. This is partly because, although both these Indonesian mass organizations are faith-based civil society associations, they both overlook campus-based mosques in their main da‘wa agenda. Keywords Youth, halaqah, Tarbiyah, Islamic activism, and student organizations. * Hilman Latief is a lecturer at the Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta and currently a PhD Candidate at Ultrecht University. 6 4 Introduction ncreasing intellectual transformation in the Muslim world has accel Ierated the spread of social, religious and political ideologies.

The result shows that the most girls’ appearance in Banda Aceh still does not apply the rules as socialized by the Islamic Sharia Agency. The mismatch between the applications in appearance with the rules for Islamic appearance is certainly not only seen as a single violation, but more understood as a whole reality, as a social reality of communication. The reality of life is very dynamic and constantly changing. Changes in the way students look must be balanced with the rules in force. Offsetting can be circumvented through communication management. I. Introduction A person's education both obtained from formal and non-formal institutions will contribute in appearance. Every individual tends to choose and wear clothes according to what they know, learn, and understand. In addition, mass media and social media today greatly affect the community, especially the younger generation in clothing. In accordance with the statement of Edy P. Irawady as Deputy for the Coordination of Trade Industry that the Indonesian Muslim community is now fashion literate and the launch of Indonesia as the center of world Muslim fashion in 2020 is not excessive.1 Mass media and social media offer many choices of modes that can be consumed by everyone in a very easy way.

Within the powerlessness of Central Government and majority of Local Governments in facing the intolerant groups, there is a local government that shows strong commitment to be the idea guardian of “Republic for All”. • Religious Studies (BJRS) Volume 3 Number 1 June 2014
AL ALBAB - Borneo Journal of Religious Studies (BJRS) Volume 3 Number 1 June 2014 THE PHENOMENON OF (ISLAMIC) RELIGIOUS FUN- DAMENTALISM IN A NON-‘RELIGIOUS’ CAMPUS: A CASE STUDY AT HASANUDDIN UNIVERSITY MAKASSAR Taufani University of Eastern Indonesia, Makassar Abstract This research aims to describe and examine the phenomenon of Islamic funda- mentalism on the campus of Hasanuddin University (UNHAS). Islamic funda- mentalism is a phenomenon that emerged after the reform and it is common- ly encountered in the campus world. The trend shows that the phenomenon of Islamic fundamentalism is growing in the campus that has no particular reli- gious affiliation and is often driven by the propagation of the Campus Dakwah Organization (LDK). This research would like to test the thesis that whether it is relevant to the context of the Hasanuddin University that in fact is not a religiously-affiliated campus or the contrary. The method of collecting data was done through observation of the activities of the LDK activist at the Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) Campus Dakwah Organization’s Musholla Lovers (LDK- MPM), in-depth interviews, documentation/review of previous research and papers. This research shows that Islamic fundamentalism led by LDK-MPM is growing at the Hasanuddin University. This phenomenon emerged as the im- plications of the post-reform freedom, so that these opportunities are exploit- ed by activists to channel their euphoria, because at the time of the new order, their propagation had a fairly limited space. Another factor that led to the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and growing at Hasanuddin University is because the students did not have comprehensive Islamic references, so that they had no checklist for critiquing and examining the ideology of Islamic fundamentalism.
