    Democratic Decline in Indonesia: The Role of Religious Authorities Saskia Schäfer Abstract The Council of Indonesian Islamic Scholars (MUI) has exerted increased political influence in Indonesian politics since the fall of Suharto. Constituted by representatives from various Muslim civil society organizations, the council was originally intended by Suharto to serve as a political representative for Indonesia’s two largest civil society organizations, the Muhammadiyah and the Nahdlatul Ulama. This article argues that in addition to its own non-democratic structures and its fatwas opposing democratic values, the MUI has contributed to Indonesia’s democratic stagnation and decline in two ways: by undermining the authority of elected state representatives through its anti-pluralist stance and its epistocratic claims, and by imperiling the fragile but functioning balance of religion and the state through its undermining of long-established religious civil society organizations.     THE DYNAMICS OF THE FORM OF NUSANTARA MOSQUE: ARCHITECTURAL HOMOGENEITY VIS A VIS ARCHITECTURAL HYBRIDITY Pudji Pratitis Wismantara Department of Architecture, Faculty of Science and Technology, State Islamic University Maulana Malik Ibrahim of Malang, Indonesia e-mail: [email protected] Abstract There are two points of departure in the design of mosque architecture in Nusantara, namely architectural homogeneity and architectural hybridity. Each provides the legitimacy of the architecture of identity formation. This paper seeks to explore the comparative, the concept of homogeneity and hybridity architecture, with a critical theory approach. The results of this search is, the concept of architectural homogeneity establishing assumption that certain architectural forms are supposed to represent "universal identity and modernity" of Muslim architecture. Meanwhile, the concept of architectural hybridity to show enrichment architecture identity because of the attempt to combine aspects of the universality of Islam with locality of Nusantara. Both these aspects can be positioned as the two subjects of mutual dialogue in a parallel position. As architecture strategy, the concept of hybridity reflects the effort or ijtihad in interpreting local and universal contextuality in the contemporary conditions that are constantly evolving and open.     Youth, Mosques and Islamic Activism: Islamic Source Books in University-based Halaqah1 Hilman Latief* Abstract This paper discusses the emergent religious enthusiasm among young Indone- sian Muslims, with special reference to the university-based halaqah activists in Yogyakarta. Halaqah is a growing phenomenon of socio-religious expression amongst university students. Within the Islamic movement, it has had a new and powerful influence on Indonesian Muslim youth cultures. It provides a sys- tem within which young Muslims seeking a new personal or collective social identity can cultivate their religious orientation and thirst for knowledge. The regional spread of halaqah seems to correspond to the rapidly increasing number of publishers producing the halaqah reference materials that the movement desires, and making them readily available in the market. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive account of the religious, political, and cultural orien- tations of halaqah members by examining the reading materials circulating within halaqah. It argues that campus-based mosques are controlled by two kinds of halaqah, namely Salafi halaqah and Tarbiyah halaqah. The findings also show that Indonesia’s two mainstream moderate-traditionalist and reformist Islamic movements, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, are less favored by university-based halaqah activists. This is partly because, although both these Indonesian mass organizations are faith-based civil society associations, they both overlook campus-based mosques in their main da‘wa agenda. Islamic funda- mentalism is a phenomenon that emerged after the reform and it is common- ly encountered in the campus world. The trend shows that the phenomenon of Islamic fundamentalism is growing in the campus that has no particular reli- gious affiliation and is often driven by the propagation of the Campus Dakwah Organization (LDK). This research would like to test the thesis that whether it is relevant to the context of the Hasanuddin University that in fact is not a religiously-affiliated campus or the contrary. The method of collecting data was done through observation of the activities of the LDK activist at the Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) Campus Dakwah Organization’s Musholla Lovers (LDK- MPM), in-depth interviews, documentation/review of previous research and papers. This research shows that Islamic fundamentalism led by LDK-MPM is growing at the Hasanuddin University. This phenomenon emerged as the im- plications of the post-reform freedom, so that these opportunities are exploit- ed by activists to channel their euphoria, because at the time of the new order, their propagation had a fairly limited space. Another factor that led to the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and growing at Hasanuddin University is because the students did not have comprehensive Islamic references, so that they had no checklist for critiquing and examining the ideology of Islamic fundamentalism.
